The maxed out SA ring reminds me of back in the 80s when I had a Reflex-Nikkor 500mm F8 (New) and it was donut city highlights! But I think the mid to min range settings looked really dreamy, yet organic. Not like some lenses. Anyone remember the Sima Lens 100mm f/2 soft focus + macro? Ha!

Those large prime lenses are awesome but you notice in the 1st two images that they don't automatically fill the frame with the bird. It just makes the bird a little larger. Getting closer Is to the subject is always the best way to get the most details in the images. I'm enjoying my 300mm f4 prime and my Inexpensive, small and lightweight but sharp rf100-400mm lens at a big discount from those big boys. It would be great to have one someday but they're definitely not necessary for great wildlife photos.

The SA Control on the 100 macro is a gimmick and i wish it wasn't there. I'm glad it locks so i don't need to worry about it but i had a situation where a friend grabbed the lens played with it and changed that ring just a few clicks. Since i didn't know it and it wasn't like it was all the way to one side it was a pretty frustrating day when i was shooting everything was off. Now i check it all the time but it's just worthless in my opinion. i would love to hear otherwise and what it actually brings to the table. I wish the control ring was there instead.

at 04:30 and 04:33 the subject in focus (bigger flower) seems to be so soft. Does the SA soften the subject in focus? The edges of the petals have a halo or bright fringing...similar to purple fringing. Some may not like this effect which exaggerates the borders. Yes, it depends on everybody's own preference and choice to achieve a softened and dreamy look. The defocus control in Nikkor 135 and 105 works differently, keeping the subject in focus tack sharp ! However I am not sure if the DC in Nikkor cuts the light by a stop as the DS does in Rf 85mm. I remember the DS in RF 85mm F1.2 also keeps the subject in focus tack sharp.

Focus can still be achieved while the SA Control is in use.

If you’ve got the mark three version be aware it kinda makes zero sense to update to the RF and specifically reduces its functionality by making it never adaptable to EF while effectively otherwise identical.

Turn the SA Control on the 100mm 2.8 to minus you will get Japanese style photos, on the other hand, if you turn to plus, you have my photos when i mess thing up in post processing

On a quick comparisons the new RF compared to the Ef really doesn’t offer anything new (except the Mount) on the current R bodies. The IS is a non event on the ibis r5 and r6, it’s actually a little heavier, there is no control ring (I love that thing on the adapter and other RF lenses) and it certainly doesn’t warrant an extra $2-3000 locally. It’s optically the same as the 2018 released lenses. 🥴 I mean a second hand 400/2.8iii with adapter ring, and you could almost buy an additional r5 body with the change from the Rf 400 alone. I’m waiting to see what the r3 and r1 does. Apparently they actually make use of the 12 electronic contacts Rf has vs the Ef mounts 8, and it’s been rumoured only these upcoming cameras will actually see the performance gains in AF speed on these newer RF lenses. Initially it seems lazy by canon, but maybe they have some plans we don’t know about with these upcoming Body combos.

I feel like the SA ring on the macro is kind of a gimmick. It’s as though they were looking for something to say “hey look we’re different and better” so they shoehorned that in.

If you wanted to play with bokeh on a f/1.4 portrait lens I could maybe see it. Macro you struggle with the bokeh complicating a stack, no point in making it worse.

That’s my point. If you just end up turning it off, it’s a gimmick. Canon makes a bunch of nice glass I’m just saying this SA ring, much like the Touch Bar on the EOS R is a just turn it off gimmick

Is it just me or does the SA basically make the area that is in “focus” really out of focus? I don’t see the point. Just make it look like a terrible filter.

Is it just me, or are the first shots with the 100mm lens blurry? The RF 400mm and 600mm were outstanding in regards to clarity...but the 100mm examples were kind of shit.

I don't really can digest that tone of Canon yet. Man.. all images to me look saturated of cold tones Bluish/magenta(ish) still I can't jump. Every time I see an images sound weird color to me. I don't know coming this thing drive me crazy all the time.

SIGMA. Simple!! (Too much bells and whistles on this Canon lens) too many features that'll be easily forgotten on how to operate and eventually break down - one way or the other leading to an extremely expensive repair on a overly priced and overly rated lens!
