The RF 200-800 mm is a stunning lens, its sharp right through the zoom range shooting wide open even at 800mm @ f9. I was shooting in mixed winter light in the UK and it delivered shot after shoot. It is better than the RF f11 800mm in every way, the RF 200-800mm has the look and feel of a "L" lens and the quality is up there with the RF 100-500 which is great

I am not sure what lens was the first one at 0:30. Looks like a Sigma 300-800, Canon never had a similar lens.

Stafford I have another question. Did you ever just take a cell phone and a tripod to take pics?

12 lbs is a deal killer. The RF 200-600 is just 4.5 lbs the same as the EF mount Sigma 150-600. My Sigma does not have dual nano USM which in other my lenses is very fast in operation. So I am replacing my Sigma with the RF 200-800. I ordered last night and now I have to wait several months. I have a bunch of RF lenses and they all fast focusing unlike my EF lenses which varied a lot from fast to slow depending on the lens. I shoot sports action indoors and outdoors. I need fast focus!!

I have a seven pound 120-300f2.8 lens for bokeh and sports action sideline shooting as well as a EF 400f2.8. I rarely use either due to the weight. The RF 200-800 4.5lbs is not a lens I will carry for long periods of time. By buying the RF 200-800 I can replace both my Sigma 150-600 and my RF800f11. I have the lovely RF 24-70mm f2.8. I no desire for the heavy RF 24-105f2.8. I will crop if I have to get the reach. If I need reach I will bring my RF 70-200f2.8.

Stafford. What do you think the quality of this lens might be? I ask because I have an RF 100-500 L lens that I might consider swapping for the 200-800.
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE 11 месяцев назад
hmm good question. I cant answer that but it will probably come down to if you need that extra 300mm above all else instead of the 500mm 100-500L lens. 800mm is getting specific towards birding and really small animals so people that take many photos of say warblers, humming birds, wood peckers to me will make it work. The quality of the 800mm f11 is a super light weight plastic lens but it works really well. I use it where I can knowing the 100-500 would entail cropping. Hope this helps and thanks for watching !

Stafford, what camera are you planning to use with the Rf 200-800mm, and, any chance we can tempt you back to Lumix with the G9 Mk2? We've got a pretty good 200-800mm equivalent:) All kidding aside, this new Canon lens seems like a remarkable value. I tried a Canon R7 with the 600mm f11 and was surprised and impressed with how well it focused. The R7 with a 100-500mm would be a very tempting combination but I'll wait to see if there is an R7 Mk2 that improves that camera's noise, buffer and rolling-shutter distortion. However, right now I'm pretty happy with my G9 and the 100-400mm. I look forward to your adventures with the new lens.

Yes, many great cameras out there. I will be using the R10/R7 with the lens i described. The 200 to 800 @F9 with the R7 should be fine maybe slightly noisy but not as big of deal as with F11. I have learned a few things with the R7 combo that has helped out with the quality. The G9mk2 and new lenses should be pretty nice. They will have less weight for sure. As far as me going back to Panasonic that would be up to them to reach out to me LOL ... AKA probably not going to happen but who knows I do love the M43 gear for it compact and simple nature.

I'm pretty stoked about this lens. I have been shooting a ton with my R7 and the 800 F11 (130K shots in the last 14 months) This lens certainly seems to have some advantages, like the zoom capability, and the way shorter MFD.... but it has the disadvantages of the extra weight, and cost. None the less, I'm anxious to rent it for a week or two, and give it a solid shot. For me, the biggest question is going to be the image quality side by side with my 800 F11 > which is fantastic. So this lens is going to have a BIG challenge on its hands ;) Oh btw, I also own the RF 100-400, and the RF 600 F11, but I use my trusty 800 F11 (for a 1280mm equivalent) 95% of the time.

Yep that is the big question is will the image hold up close to the 800 prime !

I have the 100-500, 800 f11 and 200-800. The 200-800 is sharper than the f11 and as sharp as the 100-500

My only real complaint about the RF800 f11 is the minimum focus distance. Nearly 20’ is not good. This new lens focuses at less than 11’ at 800. That will make a big difference.
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE 11 месяцев назад
ohh yes makes a big difference in small birds and filling the frame vs having to back up with that 20' min focus. Ben there with you...
@Chris_Wolfgram
@Chris_Wolfgram 11 месяцев назад
A few thoughts on this. First off, I thought it was going to be a bigger problem than it really was. I was quite surprised to find how rarely I was getting any closer to my birds in the wild. And most of the time when I did, a step or two back fixed the problem. Secondly, I have experimented with extension tubes, and gotten the MFD of this lens down to about 12 ft ! And I'll tell you, with the equivalent of 1280mm (oh, I use this lens on the crop body R7) it is hard to fit a Hummer in the frame from 12 ft ! All of this said, it would be fantastic to have a lens with a native MFD of 11 ft !

@@Chris_Wolfgram I hate the 20 foot MFD of my RF 800f11. I hate it!! I ordered the RF 200-800 in part because it has a 10 foot MFT at 800mm. 10 feet will be a lot more useful for me than 20 ft. !

well I've seen 2 in field reviews of it so far, both in broad day light, yeah, every lens won't have any problems with AF or sharpness really in those conditions. What I'd like to see are early morning, blue or golden hour light videos. 1 of those video's I watched had just a couple shots/images from that time frame and the images were really soft as well images past 40 meters looked the same.

Yep, I noticed with my F11 lens that some images were nosier than I wanted. I started to shoot it more like a point and shoot vs a Full Frame camera and the quality went up. I will probably post a video on those specific settings. Thanks for noting that.

Stafford that lens you're holding is not a Canon lens that is a Sigma lens so and can you really compare a lens that is F 9.0 versus a lens that is at 5.6 and that Sigma lens you were just holding is internal zooming a much better design than a zoom that focuses on the outside and throws the weight off and also is very prone to getting dust inside of it it's simple . Sigma made it right , just to heavy and to big ( but it is A 5.6 lens ) Canon did not , they made it external Zoom when they should have made it internal Zoom .

ahh you caught my most important point ... Usability... This is where camera review guys do not even do the leg work. I want to use this in real world conditions and give you my thoughts against the other 800mm lenses. IF this lens sucks I will say such sense I spent 2k on it. Thanks for making a note about and will post those point in upcoming videos.

Obviously, if you are at all interested in buying this lens it's because you have Canon bodies! Nikon lenses don't do you a lick of good. It's like you got an SUV and go to buy tires, and the salesman says, "Don't forget these sportscar tires over here!"

@@alansach8437 Right i mean nikon does have a killer 800mm lens… light weight fast but sadly $6400 US dollars but cheap in comparison to the 800mm lenses
