buyer beware: Wow look at the nice new shiny bike, it’s a beautiful piece of German engineering, but I want to let you know of my experience with Canyon Aeroad CF SL8. I too was delighted with the thought of a sophisticated bike at a reasonable price point. It came with a 6 year warranty, but that warranty is useless. I have logged over 30 thousand miles on my Specialized Allez with no major issues, I have replaced the gear cable for the rear derailleur a couple of times and the tires only once. My 11 month canyon had to have the bottom bracket replaced after only 5,000 miles. I reported this to Canyon and they are blaming me for not taking proper care of my bike. I loved this bike and looked after it accordingly. Washed at least once a week (no pressure wash) locked in the garage overnight and stored in the basement during the winter. After finding a mechanic who would repair my bike (most technician won’t ever look at a Canyon) he told me that the bottom bracket is a cheap one that has no seal against water and debris intrusion. It breaks my heart to have to write this but if I can at least help one person with this it will be worth it. Canyon did offer me a $75.00 voucher on their web site but to me thats useless.
7:23 I'm bike shop mechanic and there is one issue. It's rare but I have seen a seized thru axel on 2 occasions. Covering the end could have meant those bikes would be in the trash.
that mono Tri-bar mount holes really open up this bike usability, as the saddle mount point also available to attack rear saddlepost bottlecage ala speedmax.
While the thru axle cover looks great, I learned the hard way that I like the see the end of the thru axle to ensure I threaded the wheel properly. One time I didn't and my rear thru axle loosened itself and my rear wheel literally started coming off on a climb.
Great video as usual. Looking at the TT add-on to the bars - not sure that attachment / fitting would be strong / stable. To fit a computer into those holes is one thing, but a TT bar and extensions, I’m not so sure…
100% with you on the bars. Less is more and I'd prefer the new aero bars to be included and the cleaner look without the Gear Groove. PS: How good are those Feedback bike stands? I just got one recently and I love it.
It is valued well not overpriced, but direct to consumer bike and you can't select crank lenght.Crank lenght preaty old school , so you basicly get a dura ace power meter which you need to sell most likley.
Have you asked Canyon? I did on my previous bike, i asked if i could get the 165mm from the 2xs on my medium sized bike (175mm default) & it wasn't an issue since they have the cranks available anyway on their "assembly line". Same with handlebar width, i asked but i ended up keeping the wider anyway.
I think those cages are the ultra light canyon ones, those are advertised as canyon bottles only. Canyon also sells a "universal" carbon cage. Two different products
At 5:18, the transition between the fixed and adjustable parts of the cockpit (where the bar tape begins) doesn't look smooth at all. It must be painful for the hands when climbing.
I like the look of that gear groove a lot. The bottle cage adapter mount on the back of the seatpost is a very welcome addition as well. On hilly triathlon course a roadbike with clipons is the way to go. A couple of years ago one of the pro's won Ironman Nice with a setup like that, can't remember who it was. Lots of agegroupers are often undecided to either take a road or triathlon bike on a hilly longcours. I'm glad Canyon is getting back to its old ways of solid innovation.
0:08 I have the canyon bottle cages on two bikes and they work perfectly with my camelback water bottles. David’s water bottle looked pretty cheap/ pore quality. He should try it with a good quality water bottle. The things people pick on.
Friend is Trying Vittoria Road Pro Cotton Graphene Tubeless Tyres on his Carbon Fibre CF Canyon Grail Gravel Bike, today was the first ride. After a few weeks of riding on them, il get him to do a video Review on the channel.
Those closed off thru-axle ends in the rear mean you can only use these on direct drive trainers. Budget indoor trainers like the Kickr Snap don't seem to be usable with this. :/ Then again, if you can buy an Aeroad, you probably would own a direct drive trainer. Or just ride outdoors.
Another great review...BUT what do you mean about 'rough roads?' I cycle in inner London, and I can only dream about road surfaces such as are in the video! To me, they looked unusually smoothe, you should see the pitted, degraded, poorly patched tarmac we have endure in London.
Nice bike.. but man can’t get on with that paint job looks cheap to me sorry David.. great idea on the fork, bad idea on the bottle cages.. just my pinions.. Pete 🚴🏻👍🚴♀️
The step gap where the drops attach to the main part of the bar is ghastly. Canyon, just offer normal bar choices, this is getting insane! (also nothing covers the seat post wedge bolt - on the most expensive model? So you have to look at that every time you go for ride?)
Very nice looking bike. Just one question: How do you put this bike on your smarttrainer? I have the previous Aeroad model and a Tacx Neo 2 and needed that open thru axle end. How can I use my Tacx with enclosed thru axle endcaps, just wondering?!
Do you have cracking noise on the Seatpost ? I just receive mine and have a very strange noise .. like a Big crack when I go UP and I Seat. Very strange I apply Grease and tighten correctly AT 5Nm
How do we get a shorter/longer stem? I don't see anywhere on the website where you can choose a different size, nor is it possible to buy the handlebar separately with a different length afaik
Dude, whoever is editing your videos needs to isolate the audio track from your lav mic and double it up to make it stereo- it’ll be much cleaner ; maybe take out the audio from the top mic- clear that the editor has used it to sync the audio for the cut- but you need to do a better audio mix- currently exporting with two unmixed audio tracks- which is why it sounds weird. If you need a bit of guidance- drop me a message :) no harm no foul but it detracts from the quality of the video overall and is distracting- make sure you do this for future videos ☺️👊🏽
@@PhilippTT95 no, i think these are new, larger cages. Ive also seen other reviewer's videos for this new Aeroad, and when they have other normal bottles in the cage (just sitting in the bike stand) and they are super loose, so loose you'd never ride with them except in an emergency
I prefer the look of the old seat stays. The gear groove, hmm... Well, it's OK as it brungs really good functionality. I miss the looks of the 62 mm DT Swiss in this version. Overall, a nice bike though.
@@tomwinterton7280 I know a lot of people (including myself) who use race bikes for ultra distance and bikepacking. Overall it's a small percentage, but I wouldn't buy the bike for that exact reason.
@@davidarthur That's impressive. If you get the dura ace build and swap the heavy 760gm power crankset out you're getting very close to 6.8kg on a true aero bike.
David - is that a HRM on your left arm? Curious how you like it compared to chest strap. I tried the Polar Verity Sense and found it slow to respond and inaccurate compared to the H10 chest strap.
Sadly ever since Brexit Canyon don’t deliver to Northern Ireland so I can’t get one even if I wanted. Tried to buy an Ultimate a year or two ago and it failed as I’d put an address in NI. Contacted support, but they didn’t seem to care. Kept getting the same ‘we’re working on it’ message from them any time I checked for an update. There’s a similar message on their website from 2021 saying they’ll restart in a short time. In the end my cash went to Giant & it has been great. Not aware of any other manufacturers avoiding NI. Maybe I’ll buy a Canyon in a ‘short time’.
@@davidarthur My measurement is 78.5 cm. I don't know if the medium is too small for me. Knowing how much the bar drop is on the test bike would help me a lot in making a decision.
@@davidarthur frame stack 55.5 cm, Frame reach 39.8 cm It is a Specialized SL7 size 56. What worries me about the Canyon is the Head tube is very short at 14.2 cm and only has two cm of spacers, due to the height of the saddle it would have a difference saddle and handlebar more than 12cm
i really like your new style of review where you actually compare stuff for once. and i can only confirm, this handlebar looks not a bit ugly, its ugly as fuck tbh.
The number is a mathematical estimation based on wind tunnel results. If i understand right it does NOT include things like tire rolling resistance or drivetrain inefficiency. It is a calculation of watts needed to overcome aerodynamic drag It's basically not relatable to actually riding the bike outside. It's just for comparison with other wind tunnel tested watts calculations.
Hi David, are the new Trek Madone and the Tarmac SL8 the most comfortable racebikes you have ever ridden? We in Germany have the same issues the bad roads that’s the reason why I’m asking… thank you
Be careful when buying by Canyon. They have lousy after sales service. They refuse to sell a major structural component of the bike like a fork, right after the 3 year replacement service is over, arguing that they have a lack of spare parts. How is it possible not to have a stock of spare parts, right after 3 years?
@@bernardo9202 yea, sadly it seems that you lack both the googleing skills and intelligence in general, because if you would have searched, you would see that the new top model is 1k EUR more expensive than the previous one. FU too mate
@@davidarthur Wish you a speed recovery David! Same here. Got a sore throat following my first imperial century ride on Saturday but I ignored it on following days and continued with my training at much reduced intensity. But still got sick...Now I am watching bike videos instead of riding my bike :))))
How do you mean? I did include the weight didn’t I? Or should have included film of it in the video do you mean? I should probably make that a standard feature
@@davidarthur Maybe my bad. I watched your video and haven´t recognized the weight. Do you have a time mark to jump to it? Thanks a lot for your videos, David!
The only true innovation possible nowadays would be to change the antiquated, exposed, chain driven drive train, used in its current form for a hundred years. It works and it works well but s minimal maintenance, sealed system, shaft or belt driven would be good. Attempts have been made and there are the heavy Rohlof and Alfine hubs with planetary gearing but nothing of note yet for lightweight racers. Everything else has been done to death with small percentage aero gains which are best taken with a pinch of salt.
@@bzzles You're only saving 48 grams on the frame compared to the old CFR. That number is statistically irrelevant to any professional seeking an advantage over the old offering. The biggest weigh savings are in the 50mm wheels on the new one versus the 60mm on the old. That difference is 204 grams. Who knows, maybe next year you'll have 30mm wheels on the CFR for another 200g savings. :) Aside from the structural changes on the frame, fork and handlebars, the new bike is a straight up money-grabbing gimmick. No bicycle racer except Mathiew Van der Pol should need anything more than the SLX, really.
All these „allrounders“ - so boring. This is not a true aero bike anymore. So be honest and dont call it Aeroad, like Specalized officilly killed the Venge.
