New Captain Scarlet 1x1 & 1x2 First Time Watching Reaction - Should I Watch This? 

So glad you enjoyed this, you're absolutely on the mark about the core spirit of the original show being intact - and it only gets better!

Sadly, I don't think anyone could replace Ed Bishop, even when voice acting he had a distinct presence. He also had a small part in a couple of other Gerry Anderson projects (besides Captain Scarlet and UFO).

This was a very underrated series. Really well written and performed with some terrific animation which just got better as the show went on.

When it was first broadcasted back in 2005, it was put on one of those Saturday morning kids shows that would involve games, interviews and showing other TV shows. A lot of the fans complained and said it should’ve been put on a Sunday evening just like the original and I agree with them.

During Production of the CGI Test Film "Captain Scarlet And The Return Of The Mysterons" in 2001 both Francis Mathews and Ed Bishop were invited back to reprise their roles as Captain Scarlet & Captain Blue. However when viewed at the time 35 Years on from the original Captain Scarlet Series it was very obvious that their voices while similar were obviously older than when when they recorded the original series in 1967. Therefore in 2003 in continuing the process of updating the remake it was decided to employ new and much younger voice artists to play the roles of the two lead characters in the new series at the time both Francis Mathews and Ed Bishop understood and respected the decision to do so. What was also considered by the new production team at the time was recreating all the original Spectrum Vehicles including Cloudbase in GGI. However as ITV and not Gerry Anderson now owned the rights to the original Captain Scarlet Series recreating the Original Spectrum Vehicles both from a logistical and future merchandising point of view was impractical as any profits from future merchandising ie Die Cast Vehicles would go straight to ITV and not Andersons Company. Therefore the decision to create and design a new set of spectrum vehicles and Cloudbase and re-name them was taken. Most of these newly designed vehicles i really like with only three of them im not keen on. I hope you continue to enjoy " New Captain Scarlet" as with all Gerry Andersons previous series it has wonderful new ideas and imagination and was created for the 21st Century with a new updated format and stories and while it stays true to the original it also has its own identity and style. It can never recapture the spirit of the original show because I'm not ten years old any more. Even so, it looks like they did a pretty good job of updating it. I know you can do much more with CGI, but it doesn't have the charm for me of the original sets and designs. I also prefer the more static nature of the original filming, sometimes limitations are more of a strength than a weakness, but I feel that way about how modern action sequences are directed in general. And I'm not keen on the the new faces of Scarlet and Destiny, but everyone else seemed quite faithful to the originals.

When Scarlet jumped his Cheetah car over the tractor I would've used the metaphor "Turbo Boost" from "Knight Rider" (1982-86), (Please give the pilot episode of that a perusal, pretty please) Keep up the good work Pani Chipman!

After a number of "wilderness years", it's gratifying that Gerry Anderson went out on a high note as a producer. Even if the show's initial screening was so disrespectfully butchered by ITV to the point where it left him heartbroken, by all accounts. Though it may be sacrilege, I found New Captain Scarlet to actually be superior to the original in a couple of ways, namely the character development and pacing. The plotlines also no longer hinged on the Mysterons revealing what they were going to do in advance like a bunch of newborn weirdos! A nice callback was having voice actor Mike Hayley play Colonel White and the Mysterons, just as Donald Gray provided the voices for both (as well as Captain Black) in the original series. New Captain Scarlet deserves a reappraisal free from hostile ITV shenanigans, chopped to bits and buried by Saturday morning kids' television "dwarves-covered-in-baked-beans-and-attacked-by-wolves" segments. I like to think that Gerry Anderson's swan song will be regarded as an overlooked gem when people look back on his career in the future.

First saw this on the Saturday Morning kids show run when the episodes were broadcast in two short parts. Even this encumbrance didn't spoil my joy at seeing a childhood favourite being updated really well. Plenty of great episodes to come.

Throughout his long career Gerry Anderson had always been a producer who never looked back only forwards and would always invest in and apply the latest technology to make his latest series more advanced and spectacular than his previous one whether it be be with Puppets, Live Action or CGI. With "New Captain Scarlet" this was an attempt to produce movie standard animation on a far smaller budget and timescale than that afforded to say a CGI Pixar Production. Initially progress on the series was very slow and eventually a new approach was adopted with the recruitment of Ron Thornton fresh from Special Effects duties on (Babylon 5 & Star Trek Voyager) who advised that a complete change of Computer Software (from Lightwave to Maya) be introduced to input a much higher standard of Computer rendering and a greater amount of motion capture resulting in greater realism making "New Captain Scarlet" the most advanced CGI Series ever made for television at the time (2005) As a result of this change in software the pace of production massively increased and a new 22 Minute Episode was produced every two weeks with 200 employees split in to four separate animation teams working flat out for over a year to get the 26 Episode series completed.

As to why I didn't see this version: it was divided into two segments for Saturday morning kids slot. I was either sleeping or going to work. Catchup services started in the UK late 2007, 2.5 years after this aired.😂

Speaking of the voice cast, both Francis Matthews and Ed Bishop returned to voice Scarlet and Blue for early test footage. When it went to series, it was felt they sounded too old.

New Captain Scarlet was an overall success to me. It could have done with more memorable music (I still can't remember a single bar of the score, unlike all of Gerry's early shows scored by the brilliant Barry Gray). Also, Scarlet himself needed a distinguishable but plain British accent rather than mid-Atlantic which is what he's got here. Some other great episodes to come, though. Glad you like it.

I like this reboot version. I happened upon it a few years ago after seeing the original and loving it. The original supermarionation version is still my favorite, but this one has some fun stories too!

New Captain Scarlet was both a technical and Artistic triumph for all who worked on the series and at the time Gerry Anderson regarded the series as his greatest achievement for Television. While the series bore similarities to the original the intention was to make the series new and fresh and up to date both on screen and off.

Good reaction. I've got to admit, I didn't watch New Captain Scarlet when it was on the TV, I tend to have a very reserved attitude towards remakes, so I've just seen the odd clip now and again. Based on what I've seen in your video, I may have been too quick to write it off.

The Puppets looked prettier but I must say the CGI looks more human particularly on Scarlet. Miss those models, though. 'Thunderbirds are go' kept them.❤

Despite the motion capture being a little off, this is a worthy successor to the OG show. The new version of making agents is super cool, no more inconvenient bodies left over. I think you are really going to enjoy this show.

NCS made its debut the same year as the rebooted Doctor Who but ITV strangely decided to broadcast it in the middle of one of those 2 - hour Saturday morning children's shows here in the UK. And they screened it in two parts, often separated by 30 minutes or so of slapstick shenanigans. And episodes were cut. Thus, I think it really didn't find its audience. Two seasons were made and there are some good stories, I hope you watch the rest.

I grew up with the old Cpt Scarlet but I've never seen the animated version and I have to say it looked very good. Great review!

I'm glad they tried with this though I still don't understand why they changed Lt Green, there were already plenty of female characters and they lost racial diversity in the process. I think the Thunderbirds reboot, though not perfect, is a better reimagining (but it also had a bigger budget and better technology).

How do i know all these facts? because certain people i know had full access to all aspects of the Production during the period it was begin made at Pinewood Studios.

I watched this when it came out on DVD here in England, as others have posted here it was treated terribly by ITV's wretched scheduling. I thought Dominic Lavery's design work was as good as anything in the Star Wars prequels! Watching your video, Captain Blue's voice puts me in mind of Seth Rogen's Paul!

If you're worried about characters not being as handsome, fear not. Two characters (i won't say who, wink wink) are redesigned after the 2 parter

In the commentary for this episode, Gerry points out that Destiny's character model is bustier here than in the rest of the series. He claims they were worried they'd gone a bit OTT, Lara Croft-esque, and she was deliberately toned down for the future episodes.

Reliving the trauma. 😂😂😂 When he delivered that line, ‘the ice is thinnest in the middle on the lake’ I called time and jumped out, so disappointed you can’t believe… Also, they screwed up the diversity. By gender swapping the only black guy on the main team and removing the black woman from the angels .. so we where down one black person. Which is what it is but like, what was the rationale? Then they made Destiny American and not French? 💀💀💀 I’d have taken it if the design work, dialogue and plot would have compensated but alas not so. Glad you liked it tho 😂😂😂
