quick question, is there anyway with this new update, to finish subtitling a full video, and then export as an SRT file, only to then IMPORT that same SRT file and somehow change it to an open caption? I don't care if the subtitles are burned into my video, but I want to be able to animate the subtitles and add video effects to them. I know if they are open captions you can do this but I'm not quite sure if its possible anymore. you used to be able to do it but now with the auto transcribing they took a lot of the customizability out it seems. if you know how to do this that would be MUCH appreciated and if you take a look at any of my videos you can get a solid idea of exactly what I mean by putting video effects on the subtitles. normally I have to painstakingly manually subtitle using titles but I hope to speed that process up much more by auto transcribing. thanks in advance!
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 2 года назад
There are no animation controls for captions so you can't do that. Importing any caption will automatically place it in the caption track and you'll get no keyframes showing up in the Effects Control Panel. You could create another Sequence and put the captions in there, then nest that Sequence into your main Sequence. Now you can freely animate the nested Sequence. A little clunky but you could do it.
@AndyGilleand

Editing or typing new caption segments seems to be EXTREMELY laggy. Like, I type something and it doesn't appear on screen for another 2-3 seconds. Extremely frustrating when typing new captions, and even moreso when your typing results in a typo and you have to fix that. I have 64GB of RAM, which is not being filled up, and while my GPU does have some usage, it's not peaking out either. CPU is barely being used, same with my disks. So I have no idea what's causing the slowness of this new captioning method. The old style was a smoother experience for me because of this, even though I like the concept of the new process. EDIT: I just tried it on a blank project, and it types perfectly. So the issue is that I'm typing captions on a sequence that has thousands of edits on it. Obviously, this shouldn't be an issue as Premiere should be able to handle that, but alas. In the mean time I think I will render out the sequence to a format that encodes quickly, and create a new sequence with just that encode, and continue my subtitling work on that, since it will be much faster. I hope adobe fixes this. It's a massive issue.
@VideoRevealed

I agree, that type of poor performance is a complete show stopper. Let's hope it gets fixed in the next update.
@AndyGilleand

@@VideoRevealed Okay yeah, my "fix" didn't work as I expected either, so I think it's just the fact that I have 2800+ caption segments typed at this point slowing it down.

Hi Colin! Thank you for the video! I was importing .scc closed captions in Premiere pro 2020 without any problems...but since Premiere Pro 2021 and 2022 , importing .scc files are a mess! i spend 2 days trying to figure it out a way to fix it with no luck! Adobe doesn't not recognize the formated CEA-608 layout anymore..No more Roll ups, the captions are not even centered! For the past 2 years i'm received cea-608 closed captions each week by the same company and bang i updates Premiere and it's not working anymore! I feel like Adobe are leaving broadcasters behind! I've seen many videos talking about captions on Premiere but no one speaks about the cea-608 import problem! I understand that most of the people don't care about cea-608 format closed captions because they use .srt for youtube, but it's really a big problem for the one who use cea-608 closed captions. Have a good one!!

Every time I needed to know something, it was your next topic! Brilliant. One issue though...when I edit the caption itself it does not save. I have to edit the transcript and save. It does appear correctly on the caption. Wish there was a way to delete a transcription since I am using the same template 27 times.

It all looks wonderful. However, I could not find the "Transcribe sequence" button. My Premiere Pro 2021 is in German language I have to add. However, I did not seee why this would have to be different from the English version. What I had to find out is that I had to apply for early access to Speech to Text. I filled out the form and I was told that I would hear from Adobe in a few months(!). I also changed the language of the interface to English but obviously it did not change the fact that the transcription button is not visible. I am really disappointed about a new feature which is not even available for all.

I do have a question my current version which is 2022 automatically updates all the styles and won't let me adjust it individually anymore. Do you know how we can change that? I use the subtitles when creating tiktok videos and when I have multiple speakers I like to change the background colors so people can quickly grasp it's a different person. When I set one up for one speaker it changes it for all of the tracks

Has anyone here tried export to MXF OP1a with embedded 608 closed captions only to find out that it doesn't work for them? VLC doesn't see them. My broadcast playback system by Crispin doesn't see them. Reimporting the file into Premiere shows a CC track though. I can view MXF's on VLC with CC (created with a dedicated machine and stenographer) and toggle them on/off just fine. (It shows that they are 608).I can import those MXF's into Premiere and it sees the CC track just fine. I just can't export an MXF OP1a with embedded CC that other playback options can see -- only Premiere can see the CC in the exported file. @VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 3 года назад
Short answer: Different languages Long answer: Within the packet_data, there is only one type of packet. This is known as the Service Block. This further subdivides the DTVCC Transport Stream into 63 substreams, each of which describes a discrete captioning service. Service 1 is designated as the Primary Caption Service, while Service 2 is the Secondary Language Service. The Caption Descriptor describes any other services offered. packet_size defines the number of two byte blocks that follow with odd blocks padded with a NULL byte. Crippling bugs, like not being able to edit a caption more than once for some unfathomable reason, crashes, hangups, convoluted text formatting, non-functional positioning options... Captions and Subtitles do not include speaker names. You'd have to change the specification and televisions would also have to be updated to include it.

I've used Digital Anarchy's "Transcriptive" software for over a year now, which I had to pay for (and pay a few cents per transcript). The transcripts happen very quickly, with very good accuracy, but I do spend a lot of time proofreading them (I export them as documents). Has anyone been able to compare these? (Side note - I haven't been able to open PP2021 at all because it apparently doesn't like old plugins and Adobe is saying that I have to delete them all and reinstall them; hoping that I'll have better luck with 15.3)

So you can only transcribe timelines, not clips? Since the text is linked to the timeline and not the clip itself, it's next to impossible to edit your timeline based on what you read. Once you move or trim your clips in the timeline, the transcription will be out of sync. They really need to get the text to link to the clip level itself so we can use the source monitor to edit in/out points that way based on text.
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 3 года назад
Captioning is Timeline based and it's typically done near the end of the edit so you're not moving things around.
@brown2840
@brown2840 3 года назад
@@VideoRevealed it would be great to see this incorporated on a per clip level as well. Imagine editing an interview by viewing text as you scrub through the source monitor setting your in and outs. Adobe had this years ago and it was metadata stored with the clips themselves. Now that the transcription is so accurate, it would be a shame not to implement this for editing purposes as well.

@VideoRevealed

You can move whole blocks anywhere in the Timeline like any other clip. They are self-contained so to change the content of the block, you have to manually cut and paste. The size of the text is based on the font size in the Essential Graphics panel. If your preview was different than your export, that would be very confusing.

"You don't really add captions until you've finished editing" Not necessarily/ for text heavy content like interviews, speeches I use the transcription word search to jump around in the timeline to find edit points. So it's great to have the transcript done right away for use moving around if you known sentences you are looking for as edit points. Still working out the ins and outs of this tool. Spelling is in US English not UK or USA, Names and some words are wrong so I need a workflow to take it into InDesign or a text editor for corrections and then bring it back into PPro. I hope i can get that workflow happening because it's a slow tool to change every American spelling to UK English or whatever.

I also got got bogged down in the essential graphics tab in PPro and AE trying to author effects templates (which I'd rather code in different software TBH because it's a trial setting it all up in AE). I've been using Adobe products since the earliest versions of Photoshop were released and when they got postscript happening in AI and Pagemaker (which was vastly inferior to two other tools on the market at the time). Greetings Mr. Smith. As always a great tutorial. And this feature is amazing and long time in coming. Im an old Avid guy from the nineties and I remember a similar feature I used back then. I find a couple of things lacking however and I'm hoping you will say - "but have you tried this way" to alleviate the problem. My company has a particular style when it comes to subtitles and that is to add 3 frames fades at head and tail of each subtitle unless their spliced together of course. The subtitle track does not allow this to be done? You can't even copy and paste the subtitles to another track to try and do this or even use key frames to do the fades? Again - a great leap forward by Adobe but as far as I can tell they "have yet to think of everything" on this particular feature? Perplexing to say the least.
@VideoRevealed
@VideoRevealed 3 года назад
There's no way to add fades or transitions to the captions. The caption tracks are locked to the top of the Timeline and you can't convert them to standard clips in the Timeline. The only workaround is to duplicate the Sequence, delete everything except the captions from that new Sequence. Nest that into the other Sequence and now you can use it like any clip BUT you'd have to manually add all the edit points.
