I've been guilty of designing ceilings without thinking about the material or the overall composition. I don't think UK encourages bold #ceilingdesign This video looks at ceiling design ideas, inspiration and materials I found on TikTok.
The UK over-relies on #plasterboard I think its time we had a rethink. My suspicion is that the cost of using materials in the video could be offset by not using plasterboard, then paying for it to be skim-coated (plastered) and then decorated. The timber ceiling panels shown are a one-and-done material, thus saving time and money, while also looking good.

I'm an architect in Finland and the the UK, and we regularly use these timber systems. There are also lightweight, more affordable wood fibre ceiling profiles. We regularly use them in Finland. Not so much the UK as they are not so readily available and therefore have cost implications.

Now this video is exactly the kind that should go viral. An Original, controversial yet popular opinion. Ive not heard anyone say this before. Yet one i think many people will agree with once they think about it and see examples. Like you said wooden ceilings were all the rage back in the 60s,70s,80s. We borrow many designs from this era all the time. I just think to bring it back we need to go a few shades lighter than what was the norm then. That deals with the 'too dark, therefore makes the room feel smaller' idea you often used to hear.

Please visit the Louvre in Paris or any of the galleries at the Vatican. The paintings & sculptures are worth looking at in themselves but the floors and ceilings are on another level. I'm not suggesting we adopt renaissance art on our ceilings and complex marquetry on our floors but they show that floors and ceilings can be so much more that the top and bottom of any room. Exploring decorating options with real wood or plywood or other materials gives you a more interesting room to sit in than the norm. Give it a go

In my self build i used OSB. It has settled back to a mellow textured ceiling. I love it

I’ve always fancied trying that but can’t convince anyone to go for it. Was the board treated?

Specifically in Ontario -- and other jurisdictions -- fire code plays a huge role in choice-- -- needing a 45min rating in single family dwellings -- and most designers are not wanting to calculate or fight the code regulatiors to prove out that rating.. unless it becomes an overlay -- which adds costs ..

Wow, that does look so much better than plasterboard.

Is it not the case that you need the plasterboard for firerating?
@RealLifeArchitecture
@RealLifeArchitecture 2 месяца назад
That is often the case but there are other ways to to achieve fire rating and the rating depended on factors like height, proximity to boundary and type of structure inside the ceiling.

Slats, like at 1:27, also improve the acoustics.

I'm currently designing an underground comfort station, essentially a concrete box, there is a curved ceiling requirement from the client. It would be good to have this type of spec instead of suspended gypsum. Do you have a manufacturer name please?

It is when it goes out of fashion you have the worst and most expensive job ever ripping it all out. Like when people covered walls and everything in pinewood.

Timber on the ceiling just looks wrong. Maybe in America where houses are built from timber but not in the UK. It's unsettling.
@RealLifeArchitecture
@RealLifeArchitecture 2 месяца назад
It was widespread here in the 70’s and wood panels were a common feature of high end homes until early 20th century

What's the structure got to do with the internal finish? Also plenty houses are built with timber frame construction in the UK.
@stepbackandthink
@stepbackandthink 2 месяца назад
@@alexandermcleman6101 That's an awfully vague question. Timber frame construction is frowned upon in the UK so whilst they exist, they are definitely not preferred and in many cases, unmortgageable.

@@RealLifeArchitecture They were popular in the 70's due to the transition between lathe and plaster and mass production of plasterboard. Homeowners saw it as a DIY solution, with T&G being a really easy self fix material. I agree it is more suited to high end homes, but only when done in moderation and with heavy consideration to texture and form. Wood panelling as we've seen historically just looks completely out of place in modern homes. It's also a poor fire retarder which is probably a significant factor in it's declined popularity. There is still a place for it though, when done the right way.

@@stepbackandthink just making up things now nice, didn't realise 90% of new builds in Scotland couldn't get mortgages. Timber frame is the future as you can better insulate, faster construct and easily get the necessary materials
