I make videos about the reality of altering, extending and refurbishing private homes in the UK. You can book an online consultation with me, to discuss altering or extending your home or building a house in the UK.
They really do fail a lot. I have family members who have had bifolds in several properties (only once installed, inherited from previous owners in other instances) and each time something has gone wrong with them. I have simple French doors, the alternative to patio sliding doors which wasn’t mentioned here, and they have had absolutely no issues at all for 15 years. Simpler is better.
What is Architecture?? I tell my kids’ if you can draw ✍️ you will never starve. (Doctors make 500k before tax … you can make 500k with one unique design/architect built with your signature on the front door encased in 24k gold) Your dad’ could break my back…take the house and bank account!! I will still be ok!! All I have to do’ sit in a wheel chair on Market Street Sydney and show off my designs.. people will come to me’ Not because I am in a wheel chair BUT because they genuinely like my designs!! Now I may have to modify my original designs based on clients budget BUT that’s ok!! Not everyone is a movie 🎥 star who can afford PRADA designed 100k dress BUT the fact remains “if the house of PRADA” wanted to design $1000 dollar dresses for the mass market “they are most welcome” BUT the house of PRADA” chooses NOT to play in that segment!!!!
Hi Neil, I was thinking about a Bi-fold to put between a 3 season room and main open area. It is for a home in the wood and during summer, we would like to keep it open most of the time. What would you recommend instead? A garage door?
Hey mate, I'm just finishing my first year in Architecture and I was wondering if you wouldnt mind answering a few questions for me? I really like your videos and theyve been helping me out nicely! Did you make your own firm as soon as you became registered, or did you do another pathway? If so what was it, I'm incredibly interested as what you do seems to be what I want to do! (ie, own firm and take on designs as I wish). If you don't mind me asking, what kind of costs do you have to pay in running your own firm, and how much do you end up taking home? Thank you!
This is NOT good advise!!! You have just moved the dew point inside the building and condensation/mould is inevitable. Breathable insulation and vapour control barriers (without cavities) are essential
To be honest it sounds like your a bit jealous and trying to gain some fame off colin, he does not give anyone advice on how to build he just does what he feels is right for him
Can I move my pedestrian entrance in the UK without planning perms? I have a path that terminates next to my driveway gate, I want to move it to exit directly in front of the property onto the road.
Thanks for getting in touch. It’s not possible to give a simple answer to your question without more info. I suggest you contact the local planning department to discuss this. Bring photos and drawings, if possible. You need to know if your property has permitted development rights and whether your proposal complies. The proximity to the boundary will matter in your case.
There is only a partial cavity because the internal face stone was not "dressed" and normally was made of irregular stone . The "cavity" that is seen is only there at that spot because the stone did not extend to to the inner frame of strap, lath and plaster, the walls were "dooked" for fixing points for the straps!
My friend struggled to get permission to just make his windows double pained. Took him forever. Eventually builder just said they can go ahead without permission. Council fined him thousands and made him revert back to single pain out of spite. The window looked identical to the original. It was just to reduce heating costs.
There is some truth in this but not a lot. It is an absolutely false assumption that you are going to get a better quality of workmanship or result from a larger business, and it’s also rubbish to maintain that a tradesman who is not vat registered is going to be dodgy or definitely going to be a cowboy. If a tradesman has been in the business for a reasonable amount of time he can call on other suitable trades to help fulfil bigger contracts it’s a matter for judgement and experience. And it isn’t the case that there exists no vetting or accreditation, we were BBA accredited, an independent government endorsed system plus we are in the Trustmark scheme. Architects aren’t always content when they cannot be appointed the principal. Look up the meaning of “Tribula”. At the end of the Day a potential client has to make a judgement, one can usually ascertain a potential builder or tradesman by using some common sense. And yes, most builders will insist on a deposit and a schedule of payments. As there are many unscrupulous people out there. Always have a contract on larger jobs & a letter of agreement on smaller ones.
Better replace 89 x 38 CLS ( 90mm PIR board) with with 38 x 50 . Place 50mm Pir board with 40mm over face to acheive 0.2 better u value. Save money on timber spend on useful insulaion. Better for planet as less wood used and less energy lost in lifetime of build
Thank you, I’m rethinking the channel at the moment. Removed a lot of old content, starting a different channel for Vlogs, no more new shorts on this channel either, algorithm gets confused
Great video & agree with all of that - thank you. Seem to have a perfect storm on construction costs, interest rates, rent controls, lack of skilled labour, student accommodation shortages, our taxation system, the planning system and building standards reforms all putting pressure on the housing market at once. Our politicians don't seem to understand the difference between intention and result :(
So true! All these different requirements, created with the best intentions, are interconnected but unrelated. Insurance, health and safety, the building regs, nett zero etc are all administered by single interest groups who don’t seem the know the industry could be overwhelmed.
Absolutely logical proposals. Trouble is for the last half century it’s been the lunatics running the asylum. They are rich, privileged and don’t care a jot about the rest of the nation, as they know the system is stacked in their favour and there will never be a change as long as it’s the same old nags running in a fixed race.
Thank you for sharing. May I ask, once granted, how long does the planning permission etc, last? Is there a time limit on any part of the plans? Thanks again.
