Hi Jon, Great video again. Very interesting & informative, ive learnt a lot 😊. We stayed here a few weeks ago, in a terraced house,Coronation st. We loved the place, now knowing why the beach is so graded. Great place, great shops with local produce, Fish an chips, ice cream, pubs......so much more to enjoy 👍💛

Great informative video. I moved here 3 years ago from Newcastle. I holidayed here as a kid in the 60's. Fascinating to learn the actually history of the place where I live.

The practice of withdrawing the pillars of coal left in a seam is described by Mark Hudson in his book 'Coming Back Brockens'. He describes it being used in the Durham Coalfield at Horden.
Thanks for adding that Alan, I havent read that particular book but it just proves the point. Much easier for the "Powers that be" to blame it on global warming and coastal erosion. This current series I am doing is looking at the Durham, Tyne and Wear Coastline. Episode 3 released a wekk come friday looks at Tynemouth, then we cross the Tyne and work south to Seaton Carew. Hi Diane, wow Arizona amazing. There are 25 episodes in all but at present I can only get out when the weather allows hopefully I can speed up as the spring arrives. Let me know when you plan to visit maybe I could be your guide?
Hi again Ive just checked the list and there is 12 episodes in the series and 25 locations. Some episodes have 2 or 3 locations grouped together if they dont have so much history. The ones with lots of history are in stand alone episodes.

Eventide 1966, my dad has told me Willie Robinson was one of his best friends and had told him he wanted to give up fishing in the boat, my dad was devastated by what happened to the Eventide, he said it was thought that one of the many Polish trawlers which anchored off the coast had hit the Eventide and dragged it as the boat was found up near Amble where it was built and it was holed, but some of their fishing gear was found in the other direction near Hartlepool, the thought was it got hit in the night as they were sleeping with the lines out and dragged along in the opposite direction to the running tides, it was very sad listening to him tell this story, also he said about the 1941 bombing it was believed the bombs were intended for the gas works, my granddad was just heading out the door to go on shift at the mine when it happened.

Thinking back to history lessons back in my schooldays Jon, they could often be so tedious and boring my concentration would lapse and my thoughts would drift off into Newcastle Uniteds next match or what I was having for tea! If they had more local content like this , thoroughly researched as you have done, they would have been much more enjoyable and interesting!
Thanks again Stephen, That was me too, though in the final year we had a better teacher who had us studying ww2 which interested me. I also think as you get older you take a greater interest in history. Pleased you are enjoying the rest of the series. The current series for this year looks at the Tyne and Wear coast with Durham. What ever happened to the large free standing rock that was situated just in front of the middle shelter We called it the fairy rock but I recall it being referred to as the the harker or harkness stone?
Hi John its still there its proper name is the Hunkleton Rock. It was temporarily moved while they installed the new beach and then it was repositioned in the same place using GPS. Watch the drone footage carefully you will see it. Best wishes Jon
I only go to Northumberland coast for the fossils, this place wasn't that great for it, a bunch of coal flint and the occasional ferruginous bioclastic limestone. Beadnell however... (chefs kiss)
Having a Geological background the south of Northumberland does not have a high fossil yield, however the best area is around Cocklawburn. Watch episode 12. Best wishes Jon
There's a very cool big rock on the beach, I forget the name precisely, very interesting to think how it got there anyway. OK googled it & its the Hunkleton Stone
