“100 years without changing the recipe or taste in any way” Cocaine: am I a joke to you?
@MickeyMousePark
@MickeyMousePark 3 года назад
actually the story of cocaine in Coca Cola is a bit of an exaggeration..in the early days of Coke one of their ingredients was coca leaves that had the cocaine removed...today Coke still has spent coca leaves in it exactly the same as in 1886..the difference is the manufacture process is better in removing the cocaine..so in 1886 there were very tiny trace amounts of cocaine..one study i read many years ago about the original use of spent coca leaves you would need to drink over 1000 bottles of Coca Cola to have any effects from the trace amounts of cocaine... The one change Coca Cola has made to their formula was removing sugar and adding HFCS which happened in 1983..i am referring to Coke sold in USA..in some other countries they still use sugar (i.e. Mexico, Philippines etc.)

Jones Soda Co. uses Real sugar in all of their Soda except the ones that say Zilch, or Diet, and I really like their regular Cola, and Green Apple. Kroger Co. has a line of their house brand Sodas that use real cane sugar, and I love the Ginger Ale, and Cola, Also Pepsi does use Real cane sugar in some of their drinks but you have to look close when you buy it, and some places like Walmart that use to carry it no longer do.

Yeah I can mentally put myself in "taste test" mode and I already know what I'm saying is kinda just bullshit. Maybe like the top comment said, the BS people tend to spew is based on "sweetness," but it's not rigorous, anyway. Distributing cans with fake logos on them and seeing what fake brand hundreds of people prefer after months of consuming them: probably closer to actual science. They'd drink them different times of day, at different hunger and thirst levels--honestly there's a lot to soda consumption, which they should have known at the time, even. I remember as a kid sometimes it was about the candy sugar factor, or being hungry, or going well with other food (which they also should have known from Diet Coke, a coke is a caloric snack, too.)

Yep, and reality is even with the Pepsi challenge campaign Comes sales weren’t dropping. The real reason new coke and Pepsi beat original coke in taste test but not in sales is because it was sweeter, people like it better for a small taste yes but by large don’t want to continually drink something so much sweeter. People might like a sip of Pepsi more than a sip of Coke, but they would rather drink a bottle of coke over a bottle of Pepsi. Coke didn’t realize this and went all in with new coke.
@JJ8KK

I actually have a story to share on this bit of history. Back in my mid-twenties, Coke was---after coffee---my beverage of choice. I always had Coke in the fridge. In the years before Coke Inc. decided on the switch, you would frequently run into little stands at the Mall where you could take "The Pepsi Challenge." Pepsi bragged that people who took the challenge preferred Pepsi to Coke regularly, which appeared to be the impetus for Coke Inc to start doing research to see if they could put together a new Coke formula that people would prefer to Pepsi, and as you have reported, they did. Before they made their big switch, I would regularly take the Pepsi challenge and would always choose the Coke as I could tell the difference. (The conventional wisdom was that no one could really tell the difference.) There was a reason why I preferred Coke to Pepsi: I like to have my soda 'on ice.' Coke always tasted best to me on ice (especially Coke Icee's/Slurpees), but Pepsi went flat almost immediately when you put it on ice. I had many arguments with people about this. I noticed that the Pepsi Challenge was always offered at a reasonably cool temp, but never on ice. Under those conditions, I think most people just preferred Pepsi as the carbonated sweet drink that it was. When Coke Inc stopped selling the classic formula, I was apoplectic. It was no different from buying Pepsi. If I wanted Pepsi, I'd buy Pepsi. When I heard that Coke Inc had opened up some toll free complaint lines at the Atlanta headquarters, I took advantage of it. By their questions, they seemed to be under the assumption that everyone must surely like the new formula cuz they did their own focus group testing and that's what they were hearing. I argued that it was probably because they did it the same way Pepsi did taste comparisons, that they should offer samples that are poured over ice to see which people preferred. Exasperated, I told them they were idiots and fools to not bring the old Coke back; I even suggested that they could call it "Classic Coke" and sell both. 2-3 weeks later, Coke Inc announced that they were bringing the old Coke back and that it was going to be called "Coca-cola Classic." For years, I would tell people that I might have been responsible for the return of the old Coke formula back then (smile). Funny, now I hardly ever drink any carbonated beverage, but drink mostly water these days, plus a couple of cups of coffee per day, of course :)

I believe every word of your story and I was a kid during this time too... I remember it well. BUT I do want to add a caveat here. They got 1500 calls a day for months. You are not the only person to have suggested this. Just saying. Yes I believe you did suggest that to them, I also believe thousands of others did too. You weren't the only one who was like "Uhhh why not just sell both and call the old one classic Coke?" Its kind of an obvious solution to the whole problem. Still a cool story and part of history you were part of but you were not the sole reason they did this. just one of many thousands who had the same idea when they called that number.

Fun little fact about the reason why coke and pepsi taste different when chilled: Coca-Cola was invented before refrigeration was a thing, and thus it is meant to be drank at room temperature. Pepsi was invented after refrigeration, thus it is meant to be drank cold. If you take a cold pepsi glass and a warm coca-cola glass, you cannot tell the difference in taste. I've personally tried this and it works.

The taste tests were both right and wrong. “Sip” tests are just not realistic use cases for the product. Pepsi, on average, tastes better on the first sip. If people only drank one sip, then New Coke probably would have had more staying power, but they do not. Sweeter flavors tend to linger and build up and overpower whatever else you may be consuming, which is why the vast majority of independent restaurants prefer Coca-Cola. A can of Coke tastes better than a can of Pepsi, but a single sip of Pepsi beats Coke.

I was about 9 at this time I believe maybe younger. But I remember it well. It was so shocking. Everyone was mad. Everyone ran out to try this new stuff, including my family and it was very sweet. It just didn't taste the same. It was very Pepsi like I remember and it was missing that coke taste everyone loved. People were furious that they did this. Taking away a drink that everyone had drank their whole life with something much sweeter and so different from what was a classic formula. It was really a disaster. We didn't buy it much after the first few times we did. I remember when Coca Cola Classic though was introduced, we bought that non-stop for years. Now I can't even drink the regular stuff as I don't like it anymore I just will have a Diet Coke every now and then but that was crazy times. The sad part of all of this Classic Coke out sold New Coke by leaps and bounds. Coca Cola was hoping Classic Coke would just be a side drink, to please some people and that New Coke was going to be their main selling drink for years to come. The exact opposite happened. Coca Cola Classic became number one soda and New Coke faded to obscurity and was called Coke II for some years before it was gone all together. I actually never drank New Coke again after Classic Coca Cola came out. But I still remember that overly sweet taste it had and how disappointed everyone in the family was that this is what our cola was going to be from now on. I really can't wait to see how Stranger Things handles this. It really is an interesting time in American history. Coke is just very lucky that this all worked out for them, this was a real marketing disaster. One of the worst in history actually. If it wasn't coca cola it would have ruined any other company easily by replacing a hot selling item with something no one wants now.

The 'New' Coke was too sweet for me, and didn't have the same level of carbonation, hence, less 'bite'...which is why I and a lot of folks like it better than Pepsi. I do drink a Pepsi once in a blue moon, to remind me of why I like Coke.

I remember this. People were mad. There were theories that the formula was changed back using corn syrup as a sweetener rather than cane sugar, which saved them a lot of money.

Yeah, just take a Pepsi, let it go a bit flat, then add a tiny bit MORE sugar to it. That's what I remember. Im wonder if some grocery store's labeled cola out there might be using a similar recipe. For a cola nerd/historian, that'd be a quest. (But I'm too lazy to do it myself!)
@marzsit9833
@marzsit9833 2 года назад
the new coke incident was not a mistake or error, it was planned. coke wanted to change from cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup but they knew people would notice the change in taste, so they took it off the market long enough for people to forget what it tasted like, then brought it back with the new sweetener. that's why when new coke replaced old coke it was done very quietly, and when the new coke was delivered to all the stores they picked up all of the old coke, they didn't leave it in the stores to let it sell out. then they announced the change after old coke was no longer available.

Another interesting fact for younger audiences: from 1982 to 1989, Coke actually owned the movie company Columbia Pictures. (Surprisingly common for food companies around that time- a decade later, the liquor company Seagram's owned Universal Pictures.)
