Picture video of NC6 performing a truly great rave-up - At The River's Edge - featuring some nifty harmonica work by Pat McBride and edgy lead vocals by Ray Graffia Jr. This rivals any British Invasion rock tune for this time period, the 60's.

This single and the LP that eventually featured it (June 1966's Breakthrough on their own Sentar label) remain hallmarks of first generation garage rock.

great record- like a cross between them's "mystic eyes" and the yardbirds "having a rave- up"

Yeah I was going to write that it sounded like Mystic Eyes. And Rave-up. They did covers of the Yardbirds and usually had a softer sound but this is a good rocker.

@Isobellyjellybean Good points - thanks. eBay can uncover some odd records we think are too obscure to find, but occasionally they sold in their own city I guess.

@koalacatcher Of coarse we can "like it all", I was responding to someone saying this 'rivalled British Invasion'. Well as you say, it's considered garage - so like I said, it does not rival British Invasion! If we were on a Turtles vid, or Mamas and Papas - then perhaps the comparison would be more tangible then

at 1:20 another band's drum set is shown. Would that be Saturday's Children (also from Chicago)?

Walkin' in the rain; Heart full of pain; Black clouds overhead; Oh, I wish I was dead, yeah, yeah, yeah, ye-e-ah! All right... Hey, hey, hey, hey hey, hey, hey, hey, hey; oh yeah... At the river's edge; Walkin' on the bridge; Stars shining bright; Oh, this pain ends tonight, yeah, yeah yeah ye-e-ah! Hey, hey, hey, hey hey, hey, hey, hey, hey; at the river's e-e-e-e-edge... A tale of teenage angst many years before others popularized the idea in their lyrics and prior to society recognizing the depth of misery that teenagers encounter... By the way, since I sang 'em, Walt Kemp wrote 'em, and New Colony Six recorded 'em, I know whereof I speak, Gabriel! thank you for asking.

@koalacatcher And for my money, there's a lot more great garage recordings that came out of the US, than anywhere else. Blue-eyed R'n B and beat coming out of the UK was excellent in the earlier part of the 1960's but of course it WAS influenced or based on original blues from US black artists. While many of their own were ignoring them in favour of Motown, Europe was embracing them, seeking out their records and emulating them. (like Yardbirds, Stones, Graham Bond, Animals.. to name a few)

@MDProdTV the comparison in the original script (under the vid) is with British Invasion and imo unnecessarily comparing a sloppy garage beat number with it. Britain also had THIS style of music - GARAGE BEAT - and it also didn't fit as 'British Invasion' because it was also sloppy and raw. If THIS was 'rivaling Brit Invasion' then WHY wasn't it a chart hit record, in America by Americans and able to be promoted by the band at home? That is proof enough.

@mahatmacote Why wasn't it a chart hit in America? The sheer size of the US. It was harder for bands in the US to break out of their home state; it was hard to get tours without radio airplay and airplay without a tour. Bands like The Seeds in LA, Shadows of Knight in Chicago and Mouse and the Traps in Texas seemed to have the fame and adulation in their own area but were no big deal in much of the US. They'd top their local charts and do nothing in the national one. Just my opinion!

The happy answer to why not a US hit? "I Lie Awke", the A side, WAS a Chicago hit. But yes, 'sheer size'...Why not are Dover hits as big inLiverpool?? Why not Liverpool hits as wide-selling as in East Lothian?? And hey? Why was that BIG hit in Swansea unheard of in Widnes?? Get the picture??

@mahatmacote ...It doesn't rival 'British Invasion' ..in what way?? Yes the musical styles are different but what counts is the creativity, music, and lyrics of the American Garage Scene..Count how many US bands there were to the Brits..The point for MDProdTV is that the American Garage scene was extremely creative and original..compared to 'The Biritish Invasion' bands which took a large part of their inspiration from American Blues..What was British about that??
@matteg490

Yeah I agree that The Garage Band scene was great and creative. And everyone steals. Call it homogenized too but some just prefer great songs like the British Yardbirds' Smokestack Lightning over the original blues songs so it works both ways. Inspiration is good but the final product is important. This is a great rave-up song, sounding like Thems' Mystic Eyes.

I wouldn't agree that this rivaled Brit invasion at all - pretty sloppy recording and doesn't stand up to The Rolling Stones, Kinks or Yardbirds. The US has some great early garage, nice a raw. But for R'nB and beat - UK wins

It's sloppy but great in that way. I think it could be produced better though but hope it wouldn't lose that sloppy sound. Also, I didn't like most of the songs of the Rolling Stones after 1969 when I feel they lost the rawness and Keith lost the great sound of his earlier guitar and Mick couldn't replicate early hits. The Kinks were great and lost it too, esp. in the 70s. The Yardbirds were great and did great covers. 14 years gone, hope you are well.
