I think the biggest mistake I made as a composer is that I began with music notation software instead of a DAW. Music notation software is useful for getting comfortable with _real_ instrument ranges and thinking about theory. It's good for writing very sophisticated compositions. But it's generally not nearly as productive as recording into a DAW, and it's not where most of the industry is at. I would have done better to focus first on the sound, treating the mix as the final production. There is a lot of skill to develop there, and the people who did so were the ones who ended up with composition jobs in various industries. Human ensemble performance is usually not where our work ends up, so focusing on a platform that targets human ensembles wasn't my best bet. This being said, even though I don't do much composition now, I do use music notation in my work. So I've put the skills to work for other applications.

Whilst this looks interesting for me Musescore is the best free option. The great thing about musescore is that it is fully free, with no limitations now or in the future. They also have museclass free service for using musescore in education.

Oh definitely! For me, Musescore is still right on up there with Noteflight! I just know when I first started out with it, it was super easy to learn (especially when I didn’t know a single thing about music) Plus I’m just a huge fan of the online service! Really helped me out when I taught it to my students. Maybe I’ll look into musescore and really dive into both so I can compare the two in a video!

Pen?! That’s a big risk, but I applaud the boldness!

@@RobertRodriguezMusic it fits my chicken scratch style better, although if I sharpened my pencils maybe it wouldn't be necessary to risk it haha. Although the whole reason I write on paper is to reduce inhibitions when it comes to doubting everything I write. I write from a rather theoretical perspective so it works for me.

@@oibruv3889 haha that’s actually a good point! I haven’t handwritten music in a few years but as much of a pain it was in school (before I could appreciate it), it’s really an “hidden” gem. You could really learn a lot about music and theory just from handwriting it
