Man your leather work is awesome. People have forgotten you get what you pay for. Hand made quality goods are disappearing in America. Something like that could be passed down for generations if properly cared for. Let the masses buy Chinese crap at walk.art I prefer to support local craftsmen like yourself when I can.
I just took a gander at your website and I'm impressed even more besides what Ive seen in the videos. My wife is an artist and crafts-person and does the odd leather work, so I know what goes into it. People always forget about the TIME factor. The time you put into a project is worth more than the product for the most part. The details you put into your work show that to be true. These bags will last GENERATIONS if taken care of properly. A very worthwhile investment, keep up the good work.
Absolutely beautiful craftsmanship, HIGHLY efficient utilitarianism and worth every penny for every drop of sweat and tears you put into them. Something to be proud of. I could see a line of 'urban walker' bags for the ladies....those are just stunning!
I am now starting to look for your videos I like a lot of your stuff I have a lot of hand made leather kit for myself for my archery and some of my old hunting kit I will keep watching keep your stuff coming
I really appreciate that, this video is 7 years old. Go to my channel to see all the videos, but they’re all just for watching now. I’m not doing leather work anymore.
I do most of my own leather work as well, though not as a business and I also carry a leatherman. Mine is the Surge which I guess is the bigger version of the wave (both pros and cons to that fact, like sometimes it's too big, but...) and I do have a stitching palm, I guess that's what it's called, I've had it for 18 years. The star socket on the side never crossed my mind, but I have used the plier jaws in close position and braced the needle eye against the closed cutters. Neat to learn yet another option. Thanks.
i've watched quite a few of your vids and am absolutely amazed by your leather working skills. Definitely worth the money especially since you are clearly not over pricing your products. I've done a bit of leather work myself but in no way would i be able to replicate your craftsmanship, especially not for the price let alone skill put into it.
Very nice leatherwork. On the large bag I would have rather had the hatchet holder on the front of the bag in place of the altoid tins holders. That way the whole set up could be turned into a back pack just by adjusting and relocating the existing straps. Other than that I really liked that system.
I had a Hudson Bay tin that got swipes now I know where to get another thanks.Very nice work get your price worth every penny.I make these candles on my profile pick, people dont understand the time and work involved in producing nice stuff.I tellem go to the Dollars store and leave me alone. As a fellow artist I'll tell you do not stop producing always keep on the move it will come back to you,Make even smaller stuff like ecigartte necklaces they fly off the shelf man.I make them out of deerskin people see it on me and its like sold/ Have fun brother
i do not know your product, but i do know hand crafting, . you should not need to justify your product price verbally, let the product speak for its self.
Dude, I have to say that is the most beautiful leather work in my humble opinion. If I could afford it, I would pay you what it and your time is worth. Quality and craftsmanship like that is hard to find.
That's some beautiful work. If people can't appreciate hard work that goes into hand made quality products , maybe they need to buy production line crap. I don't mind paying good money for good quality. Awesome bags and pouches. I will be ordering soon for Christmas gifts , for myself of course lol. Peace
Fine work Doc! I totally understand your point on price point! I'll be in touch with a couple orders for my canoe expedition needs...I appreciate the care in your designs. Jeff Lanham
Awesome leather work brother. Love your gear. Im glad your still open to doing bespoke though. When I have some spare cash you'll definitely hear from me. ive seen your reviews from Dave Canterbury and the canteen shop too. Real craftsmanship.. beautiful
Brother that is some nice leather wear. If I happen to come into some money then I'll have something made buy you for sure! Take care & keep making the hardcore leather kit.
Beautiful work. I had some ideas for some custom work not that fancy just some thing rolling around my head. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks.
Man, nice work as always. I'll vouch for the detail, work, price point. Ryan's right on guys. And Ryan thanks for the heads up on that Kodiak hide, that stuff looks sweet. I'm going to have to give it a try.
"And if you don't know what a tender tube is, look it up" Lol... I think having something like a Speedy Sticher would make some of this work a bit easier(if you don't already have one).
The reason I don't use a speedy stitcher or stitching awl is it uses a lock stitch, which is the same stitch a machine uses. I use a saddle stitch on everything (2 needles on each end of one thread). Its not that a lock stitch is a bad stitch, but a saddle stitch is superior.
omfg 250 ? that's nothing for that! people crazy if they think that's to much for that side pouch ( the one with the belt loops) I'm Happy now, even in that ballpark for a price is wayyyyyy worth it, if ya dont think so stick to the big stores and the nylon crap hahhahahah, live your work, even the wife wants one :))
Thanks man. The few pieces of gear that I have for myself have actually gotten better over the years, but I like patina's and gear that looks old, so maybe I'm just biased.
I would love to work with that soft burgundy coloured leather you use, it looks so smooth, soft and tough. Could you please let me know where I could find that particular type and colour of hide?
I was wrong, I read your comment without paying attention to what video you commented on. The bag in this video is made with Kodiak hide from Tandy Leather Factory. Get it while you can, the quality has slipped significantly, and it will soon be discontinued. You might be better off looking at this stuff buffaloleatherstore.com/. Thats where I will go from now on for this kind of leather.
Aha! Thank you :) Muchly appreciated, I had a bit of trouble finding it on that site you mentioned before, and I just thought they didn't sell it any more. Thanks for taking the time to come back and let me know. Best of luck with your current project. :)
Paul S. It looks like one purchasable on asbellwool dot com I have four of their products, have worn them in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. They are well made, but wool is wool and doesn’t seal out the wind and can succumb to vicious undergrowth if worn as an outer layer like he is doing. I love mine, just have to be mindful to use it as it works best, and if woods running In windy area or through heavy underbrush than cover it with buckskin or something.
It's beautiful work. But I don't think you know what expensive leather work means. I've seen leather jackets & motorcycle saddlebags in the upper thousands that were not as detailed as your work..
It really all depends on your name and reputation I believe. Do I charge as much as I need to, to even be comfortable doing this? No. A resounding no. We're looking at going off grid...in a 500 sq ft. cabin with no running water and no electricity so we can continue doing this. The more my name and reputation gets out there, the more I am able to charge for my work. Some might see this as a way to gouge prices for "the name" on the product, but those people have no idea what goes into this, and they have no idea that we're struggling at the prices we charge...
