New data shows Arizona’s teacher shortage worsening

Districts are trying to get creative when it comes to recruiting and retaining teachers. Some are finding success with their strategies, but not all of those solutions may be sustainable long term. Data shows that 29.7% of teaching positions remain unfilled across the state. About 53.2% of the vacancies are filled by teachers who do not meet the state’s standard certification requirements.

Arizona has always been a horrible state to teach in. Stipends are not on the salary scale and don't go to your pension. Move to a blue state. Way higher pay and benefits. Northern CA needs teachers and pay is high. Unions are strong.

Why would anyone go to college for at least 4 years only to enter a profession that is widely disrespected, terribly paid, and even dangerous?

Yes, but I WISH it was only 4 years !! it takes over a year after that to get a Credential

The problems are some parents, rightwing politically motivated interest groups and legislators, not students, teachers, or [most] school administrators. Financial incentives can do little to motivate an educator to take a teaching position in this environment.

Its evident you know nothing about what happens in a school. I quit teaching due to right-wing parents asking me how much time I spend "teaching trans" as opposed to content. Learn something before you mouth off.

AZDE should be more flexible with licenses requirements and school districts should help significantly teachers to get certified. Most cases accepting applicants are based on holding a teachers license before knowing their background and experience and their potential . 🤷🏻‍♂️

Becoming a teacher in many counties is like walking into a minefield. Even for schools that are mild by comparison, the work load, students, parents and administrators are hard to work with. If politicians cared about kids they would fund education properly. Watch your step!

Well, isn't that just the icing on the educational cake? It seems that every time you muster up the courage to ask your esteemed teachers a truly important question, they respond as if you're some bumbling fool who has taken a wrong turn into their classroom. Now, I'm no expert, but isn't one of the fundamental roles of a teacher to provide guidance and knowledge to curious minds? Maybe it's just me, but when I ask a crucial question, I expect something more than an insinuation that my involvement and understanding are lacking. After all, dear educators, how can we young minds grow and learn without your sage wisdom? So here's to hoping that one day our beloved teachers will recognize our potential for brilliance instead of categorizing us as mere question-askers with little value. Cheers to finding those rare gems in education who actually encourage curiosity rather than stifling it.

You are right just about one thing teachers expected to do. And is, to guide students to find the answers themselvs. Teachers are NOT expected to answer any question they asked.
