Police have identified the 64-year-old driver who they say was drunk behind the wheel before crashing into a Long Island nail salon on Friday. Four people were killed, including an off-duty NYPD officer. NBC News’ George Solis has the toll on mourning friends and family.

Because they're so relaxed, when you're sober you tense up before an accident, which causes most issues. But in this case honestly even a sober person would have survived this, unfortunately.

I know, most of the time that's true somehow. There was one guy near me in Syosset LI last year or so who went out on N. Blvd. drunk or high as can be speeding down towards Cold Spring Harbor, that curve, and killed a couple coming the other way head on in their Jaguar. But they weren't speeding or high. The perp. walked away unscathed somehow, I believe. I'm not sure what the disposition of that case is now, though. Maybe he's in jail. One hopes so. I've been right over near where this nail salon crash happened in Deer Park the past year or so a lot, going to Tanger Outlet, etc. Tons of small businesses like this along Grand Ave. Very sad.

I mean, he was flying! It was quite shocking. When they showed the door bell camera footage of Anne Hesche's car zipping past in her deadly crash, it was the same thing. Like they were doing mach 10.

The four victims were Meizi Zhang (50), Yan Xu (41), Jiancai Chen (37), Emilia Rennhack (30) - 9 other people including a 12 year old were injured. Prayers to the families of the victims.

The driver needs to be charged with vehicular manslaughter and 9 counts of attempted vehicular manslaughter, as well as destruction of private property along with dui.

Patience Snoozy. Vehicular homicide x 4, and a dozen other charges will be filed this week. Police needed at least one charge right away to keep him in custody while the rest is being sorted out.

All parking lots should have steel poles in front of storefronts to prevent this. Happened to a friend's store in La Jolla years ago. Driver ran away. Turned out he lived in same highrise as store owner !!

The gas station I frequent installed these a couple months ago after someone crashed into their front door (no one was injured). Insurance companies should give businesses a rate break to incentivize them to do this BEFORE something happens.

@MrSloika you don't need political connections if you use a car as your weapon. Killing someone with your car gets you less jail time than many non-violent crimes, no matter who you are.

Ain’t no way they’re just giving him a DUI. He killed 4 people including a NYPD officer. The DUI is just so they can hold him in custody until they figure out the full laundry list of charges they’re going to hit him with. He’ll never see the outside of a prison again most likely.

There will be additional charges. I think they need to charge him with something in order to hold him while the investigation takes place and they figure out what other charges would apply.

You sometimes have to have a situation for people to take action. People used to have no problem slugging back an extra drink or 2 before stumbling to their cars. They used to call it "one for the road", and everyone laughed about it like it was perfectly okay. They used to not include seat belts in vehicles, either. No doubt, you will start to see those barriers you speak of, going up in more places.

New buildings are normally safe but it would cost more money to retrofit higher curbs or crash poles at old locations due to the amount of old buildings still in use. Most new gas stations I see have crash poles surrounding the pumps as well as the entire length of the store. High curbs are also used frequently.

Many writing comments here are perplexed why the driver has only been charged with DWI. Rest assured that dozens of other charges will be filed this week including vehicular homicide x 4. Police needed at least one charge right away to keep him in custody while the rest is being sorted out. I hope that answers all of your astonishment over the single (so far) charge. The question that I have is . . . will he get bond or be held at Rikers until trial, which should be the case, in my view.
