New Developments in Masonry Heaters

This traditional northern European approach to heating with wood goes by many names including Russian fireplaces, Finnish fireplaces, and mass wood heaters. No matter the name, the concept remains the same: burn briefly and slow the escape of flue gasses. Our guests have decades of experience designing and installing these systems, and Albie recently returned from Finland, where he learned about new technologies he is excited to share with us.

I really appreciate this being covered, and the fact that masonry heaters were not dismissed by the BS&B team because they are combustion based! You will often see woodstoves listed as 'not recommended' in an energy efficient home because of air management, and temperature swings, air quality issues, and burn efficiency. None of these of need to be true (although they often are with conventional woodstoves). One of the philosophical challenges with our current building science methods is dependence on computerized systems and modern materials that do not have a proven track records, and require complex manufacturing and supply chains. (I often wonder how long the sealing tapes on my house will stay 'stuck'.) I don't think we have the same unknowns with masonry heaters, because we are generally dealing with old, proven, solid-state technology which has been continually refined with improvements for a very long time.

Fire is part of nature that needs to be shared indoors

Preceding the technologies intro to Europe by several thousand years, the Koreans had ondols (a type of hypocaust) and the Chinese had kang beds (heated sleeping platforms). The ancient Greeks used hypocausts as did the Romans, *ALL* thousands of years before King Gustov! It is fascinating this technology keeps being rediscovered! Right until today, where most North America don’t even know it exists 😁

Thanks for the great content! Reminds me of polar night energy. whether it’s sand or soapstone, minerals and dumb heat seem to have an ongoing role to play in heat storage. Also, this was an interesting choice of guests because fire is often seen as too aggressive in a well sealed and insulated house. I think this is an appropriate nod to the heart and art of houses and what makes them a welcoming home. The exact application for this audience is yet a fun challenge. how can you include the spirit of fire with the nerdy practicality of BS?

I agree with you entirely. To add to your thought though, for me personally, I avoid calling this "dumb" tech. The term "smart" applied to home systems is more marketing schtick than a fact. It has it's place, but there are a lot of cons as well. I have zero intention of spending my satudays trying to bluetooth pair or get software updates for appliances that operate more reliably and have far more longevity without being, "smart". The ideas and all of the people in this video are lot smarter than a $700 "smart" kitchen blender!

This is a fantastic show, I'm a 68 year old guy living in the redwoods of Northern California originally from the Boston area. I've been building my own home for the past 12 years and have been studying every type of fireplace, wood stove and masonry stove for a for a long time, I want to put the most perfect unit in. I only came upon masonry heaters about 8 years ago. I am ready to start building. Where can I find links to your 2 guests? Thanks again for an absolute brilliant show, these guys are definitely stars in their field. I need to get in touch with them.

I've always wondered if the air in is better from an outside inlet rather than an internal (room) inlet, given that the draw might actually suck out a certain amount of breathable air if the dwelling is overly sealed.

I spoke to a builder recently that said they had a very efficient stove in a very tight house, and the stove would not draw/burn unless they opened a window because the stove did not have a dedicated air intake. Generally the dedicated air intake is recommended because it allows you to isolate the heat loss (doesn't allow the device to suck the conditioned air out of the house), but considering air quality and the truly paltry ASHRAE standards are more than worthy of some serious consideration as well.

What's the spread between the heating efficacy of a high quality, catalytic free standing wood stove (e.g. Woodstock, BlazeKing, or Hearthstone) with a large masonry hearth/back for stored radiation and a masonry heater? On warmer days, when it gets in the 30s and 40s F, would a masonry heater provide less control for lower heat output?

Did I miss how these are vented and how the air intake works with a tight house?

Same as any other wood burner.
@johnathon007
@johnathon007 Год назад
It's basically just a normal wood stove with a jacket around it. Instead of venting straight out the top the gasses are sent down the sides or through a maze before being collected again for a normal flue.

@@johnathon007 yes, but air intake and smoke release in air tight homes is an issue.

@@Zickafoose2024 In an airtight home you would use a cold air intake from outside just like any normal stove.

Question for you. I am designing a very large, old stone house, 2 1/2 floors, about 320 meters squared footprint, located in Central Portugal, and need to heat it. Would you recommend masonry heaters for this? Trying to also figure out how to move the air through the house, since it's not an open floor plan, more like a small hotel, having at least 7 bedrooms. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks.

Have a look at ecco stove uk. They have a video showing proven tests of air movement. Personally, I think an old style masonry stove (kachelofen) and a new style Tulikivi or Ecco Stove at different parts of the property, with ceiling level vents where needed, is the way I would go (and will be).
