The worst thing to come out of this outrage is the VA’s (the person Mark showed towards the end) response to this whole situation and literally saying that Spanish is a language forced onto Latinos by colonizers (implying that it’s not their own language). As if you couldn’t insult your main demographic any further.
Okay I think I gotta step in here, she’s not wrong in that historically Spanish, or Español, was a language created by those who colonized the indigenous peoples of South America which of whom had their own languages. But in a similar fashion as how English is still used in the Americas, it has stayed around due to ease of use in communication with global partners and other cultures. Historically this is also a common practice that humanity has carried since it’s inception of language.
@@thezombiefan777 You're not wrong, but the issue isn't that she was wrong in that bit of history, but that she decided to bring it up in her response to people criticizing the show. *That's* what set people off.
considering how Disney doesn't like any controversy even in the slightest (see banned Bluey episodes) I think this show is gonna be canned pretty damn fast.

Funniest part of the whole VA situation is that she could’ve literally left the whole thing with her hands clean. She could’ve said something like “Hey guys I don’t speak spanish all of the time so I apologize for not realizing about my mistake before the release of the trailer”, and while she might still have faced some minor backlash later she’d have mostly been forgiven or ignored. But nahhhh she just had to victimize herself and call us latinos (mind you, the culture THEY are trying to represent “respectfully”) the racist ones for complaining about their incompetence lol.
Very ironic of her to call Spanish a colonizer language in English The Spaniards actually did have friendly relations with some of the natives (particularly the ones that helped with the Aztecs), while the British killed everyone, even the ones who dared help them And it's not just in the US, go look at every place where they established themselves and what happened to the natives
@@rushink There were British (and later, Americans) who were nice with the natives, its just that the ones who WEREN'T left permanent consequences. The Spaniards, I believe, were kinder overall. People should take into account how mixed modern populations are when talking about colonizers, because their jabs just sound like ancestral guilt rather than anything profound or progressive. None of us are in any way responsible, nor did we experience settlers messing with us. Let it go, first contact was 531 years ago.

One of the kids is named Cha-Cha and the other kid is named Cuquita (little vagina). Cha-cha is a derogatory term that refers to an individual of Mexican descent in a housekeeping or maid position. One kid is named after a reproductive organ and the other kid is a slur.

It’s so sad because the person who first wrote it was basically writing about their own childhood and struggling to communicate with their family since they didn’t know Spanish. It started so wholesome.
Mexican friend of mine had a serious rant when they saw the theme song video. Make matters worse, youngest girls is named Cuquita....which is apparently a slang for a woman's vagina...

@@click1774 Actually the part of California that is on México is not known for the earthquakes. The part of México that is known for the earthquakes is CDMX, the capital of the country. The earthquakes are much more destructive on that city because all the place is build over a f*ck*ng lake. Is supposed that all the building there need an extremely powerful anti earthquake system but only the "Torre latinoamericana" has it, and it works very well, that old tower is stupidly strong thanks to the system.

I’m like 85% sure that this shows gonna have two season. Disney realizes that this wasn’t a really good idea. And have this thing chucked onto Disney+, we’re it slowly dies
The fact Disney has done actual good Latin American representation and then goes around doing this shows how the writers and teams change so much between projects.

For those who don’t know, the voice actor for the main girl “Tater” put on Instagram how she was thankful her parents raised her outside their “sh*thole country.” (She’s Mexican American) And then said on an Instagram live that she didn’t care her spanish was gringo sounding because she thinks “I don’t have to speak the language of colonizers” ….yeah.

As a Mexican, the thing I find most offensive about this is that it feels extremely pandering and condescending. Like, am I suppose to think, “Aye! Dios mio! Finally! A show I can watch! Thank you my white saviors!”. This was produced by someone who’s as white and probably wants praise from me. Like, go to Hell…. I’ll stick with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The thing about "Terremoto Heights" is something much talked about in the Hispanic community. It's like making a series about the United States and calling the city "School Shootout Heights" or being located in Japan and calling the city "Tsunami Heights". That's why it offended enough, to put them in context as you said.

It's the kind of thing where if it was on comedy central, or the like I think it'd be fine. Offensive stuff can be funny, even if crass. The same thing can go for their names, offensive but "ok" in an adult show. But when you're a kids program, and Disney especially that's kind messed up to do. Even more so when Disney has made products like Coco and Encanto, which from what I've heard are accurate and non offensive portrayals of those cultures.
@@VonSnuggles1412 to be fair it's just a few of the names that can be misinterpreted cause of slang but names like Gordo an nacho is pretty common. I mean hell I've been called preito by my family all my life which literally means dark or black, and names like those are common.

Rainbow capitalism only works if they make money. They literally don't care otherwise.
Slight correction: A real accurate rainbow would have 7 colors, with two variants of blue in it, the lighter shade being blue while the darker being indigo. The LGBT flag isn't accurate, it's just more standard. So if you were to include 7 colors(or more) and perhaps change the hues a bit, I don't think it would be suspected as LGBT-related.
@@nothdmoon The original flag had 7 stripes, it just cost too much to make. They cut the pink stripe to make it more affordable to everyone. Each colour also represents something.

I‘m not Hispanic but I just want to emphazize what some actual Latinos have said. People have said that the nick spin off “the casagrandes” did this giant family trope in a much better way, and actually tried to not be the most stereotypical show on earth.

@@Peach_C_Toadstool well in this one scenario it makes sense because people are comparing what the street they live on represents. theyve taken a disaster that a lot of people from that culture suffer from and lose family to, and to get people to see how bad it really is they say things like "thats like making a japanese show with a location named tsunami road" in this instance the person used german people and something that really affected their culture
Tbh, that might be why I didn't recognize the word like some other people have! There are so many different terms depending on the region. I remember people being upset about "Gordita" because it means chubby (and of course, it's also the name of a dish). Idk who else this also applies to but it's commonly used as a term of endearment in my family so that particular one didn't irk me too much! Chacha made me raise a brow though...
The staff could have easily said: "When you live in a place like America, where you bounce back-and-forth between English and your native language, some phrases become changed. When I was a kid, I would frequently say 'Oye Primos' to my cousins, and because we lived together they understood what I meant". But no, instead she called the -haters- detractors "Grammar N@zis", when she could have easily explained why she used informal spanish in the intro.

I could have picked a better word for it, but I forgot what the normal word for "People with low, LOW expectations for a thing" is called (Detractors, I think?), So I went with "Hater" not realizing that assumes their hate is unfounded; which in this case is wrong because people have VERY GOOD REASONS to not like the show.

Please note: The main VA, in response to the grammar criticisms, rezponded by saying "Spanish isn't a real latino language anyway it's a colonizer language". Which, beyond being the grossest of oversimplifications, the latin american communities this show was clearly meant to pander to took it as an insult, because it came across as her saying essentially anyone who uses the language may as well still be colonized and subservient (even though it is, at this point, very different from the spanish of Spain). This show is gonna be forgotten, but you know what won't be? This VA's response when potential employers look her up.
It's even funnier she called it that when speaking English ANOTHER colonizer language. It's so hypocritical and just so insulting for Hispanics like me. I didn't have much of a problem with the grammar UNTIL she had that horrid and blatantly racist response.

The staff really aren't doing themselves any favors with the backlash. Instead of reassuring the Hispanic community or make some changes, they choose to double down and insult their audience. They brought this own themselves.

@@maapauu4282 Well, mermaids as we know them today came from Norse and Greek mythology, and as such it would make the most sense for them to display European features. That said, the biggest problem here is that they changed the race of an established character.
I think it'd be hilarious if Disney ends up cancelling Primos before it even airs, simply because of how much backlash it's gotten, and the true nature of the staff

As a Peruvian, I just want to say they really fucked up with how they managed that controversy, that actress's voice shouldn't have said that thing about the language of colonizers, and seeing how the show's creators just said that the "oie primos" and other words that are mispronounced in Spanish are a common joke in the show, just makes think why couldn't they said that from the beginning it was easier and this controversy never happens or at least it doesn't go this bad.
As a Mexican, this is pretty stereotypical, but I’ve seen more offensive things then this. I like how you mentioned the Loud House because it has a spin-off about Ronnie-Ann’s family which is basically has the same concept as the Primos but does cultural stuff very well, just watch that if you like this concept.

If i were the creator of a show and a voice actor made a TikTok like that without running it by me first I'm not kidding I would fire them that second.
I think there's one way to sum it up best with a Joe Swanson quote "Who was the target audience? Who was this made for, a Mexican who never met a Mexican?"
It's for Mexican-American living in LA (you can see the Hollywood sign in the opening) by Mexican-Americans. If that was made clearer this would be a non-issue, even Earthquake Heights being a California self-own thing, instead of spitting of the face of Mexicans and Chileans.
One of the little girl's names is "Cookita." It sounds weirdly similar to "cuquita" which means "little vagina." Soooo.... yeah.
