@@joshuadelisle Annnnnd now I have to subscribe. Well done, you got me. Excited to see version 2. Quick question. Can you just use a battery dock that just wires directly into the voltage regulator? Would that achieve the same result, or does the battery first need to be reduced to 12 volts?
@joshuadelisle

@@DumbfoundedMadman you could use a 6v battery directly wired with no regulator. Just never use a 24v on a 12v fan.

This was great! Using glasses under the mask for welding might be an issue - but a diy PAPR is definately the future for this boy! No more fogging glasses, no more uncomfortable masks leaking. There are a few 3D print PAPR efforts around. Strangely none have really standardized and taken off. Should be a prime project for 3D printing.

I saw this yesterday, and all my parts arrived today. I'm substituting a cheap, full face respirator for the snorkel, and 3D printed a 40mm to CPAP adaptor to connect the mask to your pump design via the suggested CPAP tube. I can wear my glasses, since the seal doesn't matter with the positive pressure. 👍🏾

@@joshuadelisle That's a good metric to have. I'm bought into Bosch for my 18v cordless stuff, and still only have 2ah batteries because the weight/slimness is more relevant for me than maximum use (and i have plenty of extras), but I rarely need it for more than 6-8 hours in a day, so if the math holds out, they'd do fine for me. Really excited for the build... my amazon cart runneth over ;)

@@joshuadelisle Well, it's made and so far so good! Didn't quite manage to sew the liner in, but i'll get there I reckon. I tested it a bit by setting a smoky fire in my grill and letting it waft into the garage and found that as long as i was at around 40% power, i couldn't smell the smoke, so I reckon it's working pretty well... when I got right close to a big cloud, i did get a bit of the smoke smell, so at that power it can certainly be overwhelmed, but only briefly I reckon, so should be fine for my uses. Also, I modified it to take the 3M style bayonet filters, because that's what i already have, and it works a treat. Basically the same friction fit using the some of the included parts, plus one of these, which i already had from a previous project: www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Cartridge-Filter-Adapter-701-20-EA-Case/?N=5002385+3294755073&rt=rud Makes the whole thing less weighty, and more compact (the pancake filter ends up just about even with the rim of the metal container) though admittedly has different airflow and filtration specs than the one you use. Anyway, thanks again... looking forward to getting some grinding done this weekend with it.
@joshuadelisle
@joshuadelisle 4 года назад
@@KerryBenton nice one well done. I've been modifying mine further. I switched the quick connect to the top of the mask so putting the welding hood on is much easier and quicker. Your invention gives me inspiration to try and improve one that I built for short use using the inflatable air mattress pump with a filter on the intake and hose on the output then put it to a half mask through a hose that was for an hvlp mask. it wasn't full face but it worked for simple purposes and was less likely for fog up my goggles.

Hi for those using a Makita 18v, the adaptors tend to not have the 12v conversion inside, unless you look for one with a torch! But you can use a plain adaptor as you're using the PWM reg anyway, so the initial voltage is not too much of a concern, but I would recommend marking on your PWM knob, 12v and 6v or making a stop so it does not over volt the blower. If you find the 12v part of the adapter fails as mine did you can connect the terminals inside directly to the PWM, so you will get the full 18v at the PWM just don't urn it up fully.

I enjoyed this video, and thought the idea was great. The battery adaptors are ingenious! I love the component for adjust the voltage! Never seen all this put together in such a compact way. As well as the snorkel mask. However the pump and filter system needs serious reworking, in my opinion. I am open to hearing responses and opinions. I'm learning too. At first I was so stoked, I was about to pull the trigger on ALL the components, but after hours and hours of researching and many rabbit holes, the day has turned to night, and I've realized now that I have several serious reservations and comments that you and your viewers should be made aware of IF using this setup for woodworking and some "in general" use insights. It's a great starting point, but it needs refinement. 1- these style air pumps have very short duty cycles; pumps like this are only meant to run no more than 5-10min, then they must rest for an equal or greater amount of time, they will burn out easily, b/c they are cheap. AND, these are very loud. I have one of these pumps for camping, it's embarrassingly loud to use in the outdoors when others are around to enjoy the quiet. I couldn't imagine having this mounted to my back. Even with over the ear headphones style hearing protection, if I could get those to work with the face mask (which i think was a super clever repurposing!), this pump would be annoyingly loud for me. I would have to go with foam ear plugs on a necklace. 2- the filters have activated charcoal inside. And most, if not all of these are made in china; meaning there's no certain quality control or even assurance of the product being what you're paying for. I researched filters for hours today, and many folks made comments on these filters not speaking highly of them. Some saying they can tap the filter and charcoal dust comes out. THIS IS DANGEROUS to breathe. BEWARE. My conclusion on filters: go with P100 filters, w/o charcoal. like these: www.fishersci.com/shop/products/scott-safety-p100-he-cartridge-40mm-connection/191202850 You mentioned using this system for welding, yes I could see this working better for that, if not welding for long period of time, and having minutes of resting betweens welds to allow pump to cool off. I would be using it in several areas: welding, milling lumber and woodworking. My conclusion is this needs much more refinement. Quieter pumps... cooling fans more likely. the pumps are not high enough quality and the filter can be dangerous. I ordered P100 filters that will work for particulates, paints, and sawdust. I like what this guy used to create his filter and air movement system: steampunkworkshop.com/respirator.shtml/ great idea in general! and maybe it'll work for some, though not for me. I think I'll take the best of your design and rework the filter /air flow design. Thank you sir for all your effort!

Thank you so much. I'm actually working on a version two but may I answer your 3 points. 1- the voltage is reduced from 12v to only 5v for the right flow of air and I've been using it non stop for over 8hour straight periods with no sign of over heating, however you are right if it's used on its max setting. 2- the filter I used is manufactured in the UK but if your USA you may want to find a US version if they manufacture them, it should be a standard military filter which will be highly regulated. Cheers J

@@joshuadelisle sweet! been discussing with my electrical engineer buddy and will dicuss with my 3D printer friend... I've got a few ideas for other components (18v to 12v converter) and 7w cooling fan (much quieter), will update/post later when I have time. Daughter graduating college in a hour or so, so off to that. cheers!

@@joshuadelisle another thought, maybe the holes drilled in mask would better serve on sides or even on top to avoid sucking any air into mask inadvertently. there may be a chance that the air you breathe may be pulled a little from outside the mask, if the holes are directly in front of the mouth area. I'm just contemplating. I've been running this project in my mind for two days since first seeing your video. You've really inspired me Joshua! Thought I'd share that I've made another mod to the design. I found it awkward trying to shrink the bottle around the hose and facemask. So, I cut about the first two inches off the end off of the snorkel provided, and attached the hose to it. Now, it will just snap onto the mask and can be easily removed. This also adds a little more length to the hose, which I find helpful.

Genuine idea, I like it a lot mate. It is horrible joke, just for sake of earning some money, those companies still charge way too much for necessary health safety equipment. Thanks, I will copy it. I use two 14 inch fans at full speed to evacute air from my small garage, but I still develop cough after welding. It is simply not enough.

Love this DIY PAPR system!! I saw this video and ordered the part’s immediately! This works great for my welding sanding needs, but I find when painting I can still smell the paint fumes and have to quit immediately. Is this because of the filter canister (P-A-2) not being rated for common spray paint?

Thank you, I learnt loads from your tutorial. One thing though I might be wrong but I think the air pump is a brushed motor. If so you might be getting small carbon particle dust. Either way at the present time you can buy from China CPAP fans quite cheaply used in machines for sleep apnoea, they are brushless and perfectly designed for this purpose. All the best.

@@joshuadelisle Thanks for your reply. I have learnt from your idea about the scuba mask. Please disregard my comment about carbon particles, if it is an issue it's probably just microparticles per billion. I become very interested in this sort of product. I have extreme dust allergies, and the things that triggers me are the little quite large fibre particles The come off clothing. I'm trying to design a really lightweight unobtrusive apparatus that I could wear longer term. I do actually have a top of the range powered respirator a sundstrom SR 700. It's flawless But it's bit of a beast and works at 14.8 volts. I use it every time I'm hoovering or dusting without fail. I want something that's more discreet that I can wear with other people. Sorry for life story. Recently I saw a lady in a wheelchair with a powered respirator with just the large end of the air tube pointing at her face under the chin. She was immune suppressed and thought it would help her stop catching covid. Unfortunately my test with a laser particle counter show that outside air gets sucked into a jet fresh air unless you're very close.

@@Jamesnebula I may put the filter after the pump instead of before. That way any dirty pump would work. Just needs to be sealed both sides then maybe in its own chamber. Cheers J
@Jamesnebula
@Jamesnebula Год назад
@@joshuadelisle that wouldn't be a good idea, because pulling air through a filter is far more efficient than blowing air at a filter. When sucking air through a filter air is moving evenly and slowly through the resistant material., Where as blowing tends to make the air bounce off. I made an air filter for my car based on blowing through a panel rather than sucking air. I used a large 12v boaring bilge blower and a variable speed controller. It did work but I lost a lot of efficiency.
