Xiidra twice a day Plus a mild stay steroid drop twice a day Plus heat packs on my eyes whenever I can Otherwise I've tried everything else and I still suffer But I will try this thank you!
Thank you Dr. love your channel. I have tried many top shelf remedies. Ultimately Castor Oil Hexane free at night has been the only thing that’s helping me. Drops and gels I put in my eyes in the morning dry up and cause a small crust that burns my eyes . I try to wake up at least twice in the middle of the night to wash my eyes so I don’t get such a build up. This pain and burning can last for hours throughout the day. Heating pads do help . Before bed I put castor oil over my eyelids then I use p.m. gel drops. I’m going to get the spray and pray it works thank you for all you do.
I find it so interesting that we also use the medicine in Tyrvaya (varenicline) to help people stop smoking! (Champix / Chantix). I believe it binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to help release dopamine, in order to reduce cigarette cravings. Your explanation of Tyrvaya’s mechanism is fascinating!! It’s so cool that we can use the same medicine to treat different conditions by exploiting its pharmacodynamic properties
My doctor prescribed me this when it first came out. Other eye drops didn’t help. This medication was so new that my insurance didn’t cover, but thankfully I got it for $10 a month! I’ve been on it for about 45 days now. I had a check up last week and my symptoms & eyes have got significantly better! I do sometimes have to use regular eye drops (damn heavy winds) but I can honestly say this nasal spray is a game changer!
I've been using it for a month now and I just love it! I felt like eye drops were doing more to exacerbate my dry eyes, but the use of Tyrvaya has been leaps and bounds ahead of eye drops! I feel that it is worth the momentary discomfort of using it to not have to put drops in my eyes four times aday!
A game changer but only for a few months. The side effects like sneezing stopped after a few months, but so did the effectiveness. My dry eyes are now worse than ever.
Great review! When I used Tyrvaya for the first time I had a lot of nose irritation and a "fullness" in my head. It definitely helps moisten my eyes and I feel it working!
@@niellalien Hi, I found that by making sure not to breathe immediately after application that has helped a lot with irritation. My eyes are a bit more moist now. (I made a video review a couple weeks ago about Tyrvaya on my channel with my thoughts.) There is no 100% cure for dry eye and many different types and causes of dry eye. I would ask your eye doctor what kind of dry eye you have and whether you might benefit from Tyrvaya.
@@ytsux9259 There is no oral medication for eye dryness. Sometimes if you have a certain type of dry eye we try a certain antibiotic pill to help the underlying issue. Hopefully one day we will have a cure since dry eye is so common!!! In the meantime, there are artificial tears, medicated eye drops, and new therapies like Tyrvaya we can try.
Wonderful review!!! I am using Xiidra now… But I would rather use the Nasl spray. I am so excited about this medication. I made an appointment for eye doctor as soon as I watched your video!!!! Thank you Doctor!!! You are amazing 🤩
I just started Xiidra a couple of weeks ago too & Tyrvaya... I wasn't sure Tyrvaya was working so I wanted to try Xiidra and I think one of them is helping or maybe both... how is going for you now?
Very interesting, especially since I’ve had a trigeminal neuralgia headache before, so as a severe dry eye sufferer, your video really is interesting! I also suffered the feeling of full ears for four years, before starting Restasis one year ago. After one month of using Restasis, I’ve never had anymore ear fullness. Thank you for this new product update!
This nasal spray works well for me. You have to use it daily though. My eye immediately went from normal to feeling dry when I stopped using it. Worth the $$ if you can afford it.
Thanks for info Dr. Allen. I am currently experiencing dry eyes from past 6 months. My doctor prescribed me restasis, eye drop & gel ,& omega capsules. It's working but very slowly as he said🤕.
Sadly, for most people - dry eye develops slowly over time and we don't even realize it (because our bodies are so good at adapting and many of us ignore the small signals our bodies tell us when something is wrong). Then when dry eye disease is diagnosed, it takes many months to years for people to get back to a normal level. I hope your treatments continue to work well for you.
@@DoctorEyeHealth You are absolutely right Doc. Earlier this year I didn't have any problem at all but after 4 months I started getting redness but it didn't hurt so I just ignored it. But eventually it became a serious issue.😐
Look up organic castor oil for the eyes on RU-vid and google. I slept with it over night, then wash it out in the morning. For a week- My eyes felt a lot better after.
@@tfm_patrick What brand do you use? How did you apply it? I've tried using castor oil in the past for my eyelashes and it's given me eye infections. This was before I started my treatment for dry eye though. Not sure if I'd be okay now that my eyes are in a better state.
My doctor just prescribed this and explained to me not to breathe in through my nose or else it will go way up where it burns like Tabasco sauce. She said she is trying it herself and wont make that mistake again
I always sneeze and my nose runs but I’m afraid to blow. Can I just blow my nose after I sneeze? I try to wait for ten minutes but it’s maddening. I’m just afraid I will be blowing out the medication.
I have had severe dry eye for over a year. Nothing has helped, including Restasis. About 10 days ago I got samples of Tyrvaya from my Ophthalmologist. I was skeptical about nose spray for dry eyes but willing to try anything. And dang, I got relief with my very first use. My eyes feel normal for the first time in a long time. It is scary as I am afraid the effect will go away, but it has continued to work. Like you, I have had the rare sneeze and tickle in my throat but no other side effects. I am so happy. I can't wait to tell my doctor.
@@imawordgirl It is still working, perhaps even better the longer I use it. I can’t believe it! I was miserable and tried everything. A nose spray has helped my dry eyes! I love it. I hope it works for you. I was to the point of closing my eyes most of the day as I was so miserable and had given up reading books. Good luck to you. We are all different, I know.
This is wonderful to hear. I've had dry since getting eyelid surgery six months ago and I'm getting depressed. It's not severe but just a constant irritating feeling. I am excited about this new remedy. Any side effects?
This makes perfect sense to me because I have found that using a neti pot with non iodized salt and warm water every morning completely eliminates and prevents my dry eye syndrome.
I am loving it so far. I was not able to read or see close up. It is worth it so far. I have a very helpful doctor. It is the first doctor that offered much help, others attempted but this really is working. Your RU-vid education has helped me so much. Thank you!!!!
So grateful for this. Trying Restasis right now with marginal results, better than without but can't wait to see if this will help even more plus not needing the added problem of waiting 15 minutes before reinserting your contact lenses. Especially in the morning.
I have sjogren’s, and I’ve been taking Restasis for 16 years. I researched Tyrvaya and told my doctor about it shortly after it had been FDA approved. It’s so new that my ophthalmologist hasn’t had any experience with it yet, so I appreciate your informative video. My question is whether it can be used instead of or in conjunction with Restasis?
@@cherylmeinke3560 do you feel like you need the restasis as much? We have quite a few patients at the practice I work at, and for many the pre-auth process for insurance is a nightmare on a 3 month cycle, and if it works well would make getting medication to our patients much easier for all involved!
Thank you , Dr Allen.Ive have severe dry eye after i got Blepharitis over a year ago.The Blepharitis is gone but it left me with mildly blurry , plexiglass glary vision for distance. Both Xiidra and Restasis gave mr bad headaches. I was afraid to try Cequa for fear of another migraine. I have watched your other videos in which you have recommended some good OTC eye drops.I am currently awaiting my delivery on Retaine MGD non preservative eye drops. I found out that my BP med can also hurt my dry eye and i will soon be going on a natural BP lowering food along with my drs advice. You are my favorite go to RU-vid eye specialist and wish you would be practicing in NH where i will be moving soon near my son. Thanks again.
Enjoy all your clear and unbiased explanations re eyes . A woman on utube has Sjogrens and has tried tons of drops and now she uses castor oil at bedtime and raves about how great this works and is cheap! What do you know about using castor oil? Keep up your videos as with Pandemic now hard to get information one can trust, Thanks!!
Thank you, Thank you!! I can't wait to call my eye doctor tomorrow to throw this one to him, nothing he has tried worked! The last drops were $125.00 a month!
Thanks Doc. I just sent my eye doctor your vid to watch and am going to see if I can try this prescription out. Thanks for making this video to inform us of a new possible solution to dry eyes.
This is the same effect as pulling the hair in your nose twice a day to simulate the trigeminal nerve. It will make you tear a little and sometimes also sneeze.
Lol....love this!!! Hey, it also sounds a LOT cheaper!!! My doc told me you're not taking it right if you don't sneeze!!! So I had the brilliant idea of sniffing pepper twice a day??? Lol 😱😱😱
dear dr Allen, thanks' again for this new medication. I like that you take the time to explain to us in more details the pros- and- cons in more details.
I am so excited about this medicine! I had an Acoustic Neuroma removed from my left side. The tumor was wrapped around my 5th facial nerve. It also effected my 7th nerve. My left eye only tears up when I chew. I am wondering if this medicine will in fact retrain that nerve?
This is a game changer, please try and I pray that it will work for you. The burn you will feel won't last long. Aim it just like Dr. Allen shows in video. Best of luck.
It's a good idea, but it wouldn't help a lot in the cases where we have problems with the quality of the tears produced, not the quantity... Most cases of dry eye due to meibomian gland dysfunction, due to age or due to increased screen use, wouldn't get a lot of help from increased tear production. But in other cases like Sjogren syndrome or similar cases, this nasal spray can help and make the patient's life easier. I hope a similar treatment comes in europe too!
My dr explained that Tyrvaya is increasing the quality of the tear (lipids, proteins, etc) not just the quantity of tears. This is my third week and it works! Only treatment I’ve found that works
Got my prescription this week, and second day using...did have sneezing first day. Second day not. Most definitely increases tear production...and it is THE FIRST treatment that had an immediate and noticeable effect. Restasis...not so much.... Have second appointment in four weeks for doctor to evaluate results.
I have had great results too. I had sneezing also at first too, but now since I watched Dr. Allen's video that shows how to angle it and barely put in nostrils, the burning and stinging has went away. I'm really excited about this spray as nothing has ever helped. This is the first. Good Luck to you.
But keep trying. Watch Dr Allen's video, it's important to do it just like he says, in order to work the glands. Good Luck and don't give up at just a month. Keep me posted.
Hey, Doc. I have been using Tyrvaya about a week. As a matter of fact I am using samples. I haven’t even gotten my prescription yet. But for me, THIS WORKS !!!! I have autoimmune disease which has caused sjorgens disease, which has caused severe dry eyes. I have been miserable. I use drops, compresses, I have plugs. Still, nothing works. Then, he gave me Tyrvaya. Just 5 minutes after my first use I saw improvement. My eyes are feeling great. So I will have to figure out how to pay for it if it is very expensive. Because I NEED IT.
Thank you Doctor. Just went through surgery to remove my salivary gland. My surgeon removed a nerve in my ear and replaced the nerve to my eye. I had to have 33 radiation treatments after that. I purchased new glasses about a month ago but am still having trouble being able to see close up. I do have trifocals. I am currently using Sustane Hydration PF preservative free eye drops. They are working to some degree but I am concerned about my eyesight. I plan to see an ophthalmologist after the first of the year when I have new insurance. I plan to check into this.
The maker's Oyster Point, have a program that you may qualify for, online. Good Luck and I do pray that everywhere will get this soon. Definitely a game changer and works to the point that my quality of life is now great.
Would really love to know if you’ve noticed an increase in patients coming to you with sudden eye floaters and vision problems since the pandemics hit? Is there any evidence linking floaters with stress and anxiety? I’ve had my floater about a year and half now in both eyes all sorts of shapes and sizes, really frustrating to live with day to day.
I sneeze about 6 times each side after taking it. It feels like administering pepper spray up your nose. Also, glad I watched the video. for some reason I thought it was once a day. oops. It's ok, just started it.
Definitely going to ask my Dr. Just had a cornea transplant and Im having to use lubrication drops almost six times a day along with other eye drops to prevent rejection. Currently at the three month mark in recovery.
Wow, this is very revolutionary. Thanks for another very educational video. Does it come with preservatives that are found in OTC dry eye medication that are irritating to someone with severe dry eyes?
No preservatives, but it does burn. Moisturize your nose wit Arm and Hammer spray and this will help, and after you spray, when it gets to going down your throat, drink water, water, water to help . Good Luck. This is Awesome!
I have bone dry eyes. I had plugs put in them and they have been so much better. Still get dry, but nothing like before. Cost $300 and I’ve had them in for almost three years.
I'm glad the plugs worked for you. I had the 3 month temporary plugs put in but they didn't make a difference. One fell out and both eyes feel the same - dry.
@@DoctorEyeHealth I received them immediately Dr. Allen, like with-in 3days of having my appt. w/ my doctor. So far I’m feeling relief from the burning sensation (sand in my eyes). Also the watering of my eyes have cut down drastically. My doctor recommended I keep my plugs out for a bit. Thank you again for everything you do, Dr. Allen you’re very much appreciated. P.S my doctor says I’m a rare case for dry syndrome lol 😆
Hi Dr. Allen... I was wondering if you can do a video on bilateral cauterization of tear duct. How effective is it? And how soon after procedure can a person notice improvement? Thanks.
Are you finding it difficult to get insurance to cover it? I know Xiidra is still difficult to get covered. It’s frustrating to have these new great meds but they’re so terribly $$ for our patients 🥺 Oh! I should have completed the video before asking lol!
The doctor's staff has to request a prior authorization for most medications now. A few years ago insurances covered this stuff. The major insurances will cover but Medicaid type insurance usually don't especially with a new medication
Thanks for the review Doc! Would I be right in saying it seems to work in a similar way to the iTear device that used to be around by targeting that same nerve in the nose?
That iTear device looks really interesting... rechargeable and drug free. I bet this Tyrvaya company is selling this drug so cheap so they can get a lot of people hooked on it before they jack up the price. From what I'm reading in the comments you have to keep taking it for the increased tear production to continue. There's also a device called True Tear that uses electro-stimulation.
I tried this, but unfortunately it did not work for me. Not only did it not help with my dry eyes (made them more dry), but it caused problems with my nose and throat. So basically it caused more problems then before I started it.
@@DoctorEyeHealth second day on it and I can really feel the difference. My eyes and vision are a lot better. It does make me sneeze a lot when I use it and it irritates my throat. But all of that goes away in about 5-10 minutes. Over all I really like it. :)
@@DoctorEyeHealth some context: I went in thinking my vision had worsen and was complaining of discomfort on my eyes. Doctor said my vision had stayed the same from last year and that my eyes were really dry. I informed him of my symptoms which were, itchy eyes, blurry vision, felt like my eyes/eye lids were grainy ( if that makes sense ) and said that I over all just wanted to close my eyes for long periods of time since that was when the symptoms would lessen. I’ve worn glasses since I was 7. I’m currently 33. Over the last 7 years my vision has change minimally. I’m in-front of a computer all day and do not sleep well at nights. I’m lucky if I sleep more than 5-6 hours a night.

How are you doing now? I find that if you drink plenty water after you spray in nostrils, before it reaches the throat, the water really helps. Good luck to you. I'm having great luck. I also use Arm and Hammer spray salene daily to keep my nose and throat moistened. Works great for me.
I go to a dry eye specialist and have tried almost everything to hit the market for dry eyes. Miebo drops and Eyesuvis have helped the most. About 4 days ago, I began Tyrvaya and it has helped a lot. The worst side effect is sneezing 6 times after each dose. I found out today my insurance doesn’t cover it. With a denied letter of preauthorization from your insurance company, you can get the drug for $89/mo. wiith the pharmceutical savings amount that is offered. That still a lot of money but cheaper than having the TearCare and IPL treatment which is $2200 for both.
Oh darn, I remember trying chantex to help quit smoking many years and ended up reacting to it with a itchy rash all over. I have since quit cold turkey 4 years ago.
Not sure if many patients are experiencing this as well, but after I use Tyrvaya, some of the fluids end up being almost swallowed down the esophagus, so I have my sink ready to spit it out.
Yes, it eventually hits the throat and burns mine, I keep a bottle of water in my hand and drink, drink and it subsides the irritating stops after a few seconds. Good luck.
I should’ve known my fav RU-vid eye doc would have a video on this. Been just prescribed this, I’ll have to let you know if it works for me. Earlier this year I’ve been under going treatment for a severe chronic eye condition. Very expensive but I just couldn’t continue to walk around with weepy eyes. They’ve scraped, put some suction cups, given me steroids, and eye drops to use 3xs a day, gel with goggles, along with using a warming mask. It’s a different type of lifestyle I wish I could go without. I am still having problems with left eye, still weepy so she suggested this new drug. I’m in the US and I just paid $115. Yep I sure did forget my coupon, hope I can use it next time. I thank you for sharing on how to use it. Have a great day!
Great info, I’m going to ask my moms eye doctor about this. Restasis and refresh drops have not been working, nor did punctual plugs or various supplements like omega 3s. Lipiflow offered the most relief so far but now we can’t find any drs that do it!
My optometrist tried this on me today, he actually had me hold my breath then blow my nose, bc he said if it got into my throat it would hurt, he also to me to take it once per day, in the am. I didn’t notice a difference right away, but I will try it in the am when my eyes are the worst, I have Sjögren’s Syndrome.
I feel your pain and so happy that you are on a road to help us. I am 79 and take the stool softeners….not working that well either. I have a bowel prolapse, am 79 yrs old and need help. Please let me know which magnesia I should be taking and what I should take for heartburn, bad heartburn….On top of all this I was diagnosed with dry eyes so this is the reason I am here…..and I have tinnitus and my neck hurts like hell. Please help me.
I suffer from fishing eye syndrome, which has,in my opinion, caused my chronic dry eye. I’ve only been to an eye dr once and told him about it and he just said its psychological and he can’t help me with it, but gave me recommendations for the dry eye, if I can’t stop the eye fishing then I prolong my dry eye discomfort.
Just talked to my pharmacist about it, and she scared me with the potential side effects. I thought the only side effect was sneezing, but she mentioned hallucinations and psychotic episodes and dreams?…..
Gosh, I read on the study and did not see anything like that mentioned. I just seen that, the people in the study did not have heart problems or other ailments, and they plan to do studies on patients with different issues, later.
I just got a sample of it. It’s only my second time using it but I do have some relief to my dry eye almost immediately after spraying it. I don’t believe I have been spraying it correctly until I watched you so that is a factor variable that I need to improve for my application to have the most accurate results. I do sneeze about 10 or so times after spraying and it makes me need to blow my nose and a ton of snot comes out similar to being pepper sprayed and it does burn a little but not super painful. I’ll keep using it and see what happens. FYI I have coronial erosion my dry eye is so bad so I’m really hoping this helps!
I've been using it for about a week now and haven't really noticed any difference yet. And yes, I sneeze like hell after using it. But then again, I'm someone who sneezes a lot (and multiple times per event) anyway.
