I drove to Trondheim from Gävle in May this year and it was an experience! Since Gävle is located at the Swedish Baltic Sea coast, 170 km north of Stockholm, I first drove west on the E16, then turned off and followed route 272 and 83 northwest to Ånge. Then I headed west again on the E14, passed Östersund, Åre and Storlien, and crossed the border. Once in Norway, I continued to followed the E14 (which is the only main road) and this part might be the best road I’ve ever driven on. It had long straights, challenging bends, and west of Meråker, the road was in the bottom of a canyon with a river to the left, and the hillsides was covered in forest. I then passed Værnes and turned on to the E6 south. I then turned of and headed into Trondheim itself, drove around, and then rejoined the E6 towards Oslo. I turned of the E6 at Støren and drove east towards Røros. I turned off just before Røros and drove on a small road with a beautiful lake on the right. I filled up in Brekken, realizing that fuel prices was not a big difference compared to Sweden, and then joined route 31, which became route 84 when I crossed the border. I drove on the 84 for hours until I reached and passed Sveg. Route 84 starts at the border and goes across Sweden to the coastal city of Hudiksvall. I was on the 84 for 5 hours until I joined the E4 in Hudiksvall, and about 1 hour and 30 minutes later, I was back in Gävle. This was probably the greatest driving experience in my life.

From beautiful Sweden to beautiful Norway. Sounds like you had a great trip with everchanging nature and views. The river in question attracts many salmon fishers every year. May I suggest a very interesting route for you? Drive from Trondheim to Oppdal and from there you can go west to Åndalsnes. You will pass Trollveggen, the biggest vertical drop in Europe, and in Åndalsnes you can take the cabin lift to the top of the mountain, close to the town centre. Then you go back to Trollveggen and go to Trollstigen, maybe the most famous road in Norway. After you have crossed the mountain plateau, you will go down an equally nice road, and end up in Geiranger. Maybe the most famous fiord in the country is the Geirangerfjord. Take a ferry to see the views, eg the seven sisters waterfall. I promise you, it is an unforgettable trip which I have done several times myself. You can find many videos here on RU-vid, or on visitnorway.no. Nice to hear from you by the way.. All the best.. Frode
