Here is an honest review of my new tenor sax by Eastern music. This is the mark vi style copy in a beautiful brown finish. Using the Eastern music hand beaten copper neck.
I own both a tenor and alto built by the same company and they have ended my 60 relationship with Selmer’s. My alto needed no setup adjustments, but I did a few very minor comfort adjustments on the tenor. They are both my main horns now.
Bought their tenor sax mouthpiece which originally costs 830 Eur and i love it, now it's my primary mouthpiece. Before that it was Lawton 9*BB which i still like very very much.
Really enjoyed the review. I've been looking for some affordable horns to replace from the student one I have(which intonation isn't all that great in comparison to other horns on the market). Definitely will check this out after this video!
Eastern being tide music is mine had these for 3 years now bought one and frankly better than my old Mark V1 as a sound tube promptly bought a backup .. actually got fed up trying to convince people . A horn that is a pleasure to go to
Thanks for the review. My Yamaha is in for repair and I won't have it for at least a month, so I've been looking for a cheap Tenor to keep me occupied. This looks like a real winner. And so pretty! I'm glad to hear it's still playing beautifully after 2 years. I've asked if they can lower the shipping price to Australia (and mentioned what you paid for getting it to Sweden). Worth a shot!
I got my horn today and OMG. It's amazing! I love the sound and the finish. I can't stress enough that if anyone reading this comment is on the fence about purchasing a horn from Eastern Music, just get one. You won't be disappointed. I'm so happy.
Dang you, Ian. Just when I think that there's only one more horn that I want (Super 20)...now this. It's like watching someone eating chocolate cake - you just gotta have some. Sounds great, my friend.
Good review and great playing, from a big Eastern Music fan. I have their Ref. 54 tenor copy, their solid silver neck and 3 of their Fatboy mouthpieces. Very satisfied with all their products. I just ordered the Mark VI copy and that should arrive is a couple of weeks. I'm hoping I like it as much as the Ref. 54 copy. I'm anxious to see how it compares to my vintage Selmer Mk VI. The action on the Ref. 54 copy is not as good as my real Mk. VI, but its not at all bad, and should get better after "break-in".
A couple of days ago I ordered a tenor black matte saxophone from an Aliexpress seller for 350USD. I hope it arrives in good condition. China has made saxophones for several decades now and they have become quite good at it after all these years. Critics are often motivated because they're probably offended that there's quality competition at very low prices. Good for consumers, not good for companies like Selmer and Yamaha. False rumours like they're unfixable, low quality etc are created to undermind the distribution and sales of good quality low price instruments. What do you think?
I feel the build quality has improved a lot over the years and they are making instruments that can rival the higher priced brands but at a much lower cost.
I'm about to buy a eastern music tenor sax, but I'm a little confused by the various saxs they make and are they all the same quality! or is there a drop in quality on the lower priced horns or is it all about the finish that you pay for. Paying for their best horn isn't a deal breaker at the price they sell at. can you shed any light on this. I just want there best Horn
@@iantrewhella9470 Many thanks. Normally all the new Taiwanese horns are quite a bit heavier yet nobody ever comments about the weight. Years ago I had a Chinese Parrot as my first horn (although it did sound like a parrot when I played it!) but I can't remember the weight of it.
Hi Ian, thanks for the review! Could you please tell us the neck's tenon size of this horn? Eastern Music offers them in 27.5, 28.2 mm, sometimes also 27.8 mm. I ordered their Customized Professional Brown Antique Tenor Saxophone MARK VI Model and asked the seller cnbosherus about the tenon size but didn't get an answer. I use their silver plated Power Neck on my Mk VI and love it! How is the horn doin' after 5 months?
Hello, The sax is doing very fine playing great, no issues and a solid performer. The neck I am not sure the size as it was sent with the sax from the same people who made the saxophone. I can measure it later and let you know.
@@iantrewhella9470 I got the Eastern Music Customized Professional Brown Antique Tenor Saxophone MARK VI Model (no high F# key). It looks and feels great and has a nice and tasteful engraving. It has survived the shipment very well and plays great! It has a little more resistance and sounds a little darker than my 94XXX silver-plated Mk VI. The tuning is also spot on. The neck tenon diameter is 27.5 mm. I wanna order the hammered copper and the gold plated necks as soon as they are available.
@@sandroflute So good to hear you got the sax and as I mentioned they are great value for the money and better than a lot of higher priced saxophones in my view.
Hi I’m considering a tenor from them and was curious about the longevity. Does it seem to have held up well over the last couple of years, or is it one of those where it’s good to start but you will want to replace it in a few years?
Good to hear.. I have a few horns including.. Martin committee 3 1957.. Early Yts 62.. Ref 54 .. My 54 is my main horn.. I usually tell students to buy a Yamaha.. l will hopefully get to try your horn soon..
What adjustments did you do? Looking seriously to get one of these. Just don't want to waste money on a sax that's not going to make it a year. (I'm sure it will, though).
Just basic adjustments, tightening up keywork after shipping, it was not loose or bad but I just wanted to make sure, adjusting pads a little to make sure no leaks. Really wasn't so much I needed to do and any sax tech will do it very quick.
Just curious as to how it's holding up past the 6 month mark. I bought an off brand nickel silver tenor in September 2021 and I had a similar reaction. It's 90% as good as my Selmer S2 and better than my Yamaha. It wasn't as cheap as the EM brand but nowhere near the cost of the big 4.
@@iantrewhella9470 Great to hear! I ordered an EM curved soprano based on a bit of research and surprisingly good reviews so I'm curious to see if it holds up as well. Thanks for the info!
Thank you. Look on ebay for Eastern music vintage coffee but make sure to tell them to adjust the shipping cost so you don't pay too much and when you get the sax have the adjustments done to make sure it's good after shipping.
Ian, you have an AMAZING 62 purple logo tenor, and an ultra-rare Selmer neck. What the heck possessed you to order this horn?! Did they ask you to review it?
Indeed I have and I adore that but I was curious about this sax and neck. After playing it I was so impressed I decided to share this review (they didn't ask me to review it).
For one I use this type tenor now. Had a few the same. Out play the five MKVI Tenors I had. Then all my Borganis. Ya is. Other Selmer. Yamamas etc etc etc etc. Well I think 🤔 so. Ha
