“A little bit of love (is all it takes) is definetly THE highlight song on the album some of my other favs on here is “who do you trust” where Bobby and Ralph kill it “let’s be friends” where all the members get to shine and “sweet thing”
Next Up On New Edition Album Perspectives New Edition - Under The Blue Moon New Edition - Heart Break New Edition - Home Again & New Edition - One Love
Under the Blue Moon would be great. That album is the only Quartet album, but shouldn't be overlooked. I feel like it showcased Ralph and Rick strong vocals. Whats Your Name / Lonely Girl.
All For Love is the slept on album many casual fans ignore in my opinion. When I listen to New Edition on Apple music, Spotify or Amazon songs from All for Love are rarely played. These apps will play like 6 or 7 songs from Heartbreak, 2-3 from Candygirl album but it takes about 15-20 songs in the rotation to hear songs from this album. Kickback is my favorite tune on this record.
I listen to New Edition on Amazon & they will play like 4 or 5 songs from Heartbreak & Home Again before you hear Count Me Out & thats based on the algorithm. People dont request many songs from All For Love.
This is definitely a slept on album by NE. And no one ever mentions their Under the Blue Moon album (their album of remakes), which was released in 1986. It wasn’t properly promoted, but good nonetheless.
Amazing video, very well written as always. It’s great how you break down each song and you don’t skip over any of them. The way you explained the specifics of the production deal that they signed to Jump and Shoot was very good too. We all love these videos, keep ‘em coming!!!!
I feel bad for Ralph, he was like a pawn in a chess game for the label execs, etc. and it ultimately caused resentment towards him from his group members, which I honestly believe he never wanted that to happen.
When the BET series came out, the bodyguard said NE had a strange dynamic. The managers forced Ralph to sing most of the songs even when Bobby & Ricky wanted more parts. On stage Bobby would force his way to the front & sing with or over Ralphs parts which Ralph didnt mind but the other 3 hated. Bobby was a buffer between Mike & Ralph. As we see Mike & Bobby fight multiple times.
Bobby was right to rebel against the program. These were hip hop kids being force to make pop songs with pop producers & then they followed that with a doowop remake album.
Whispers in bed and Tonight’s your night…. Great songs… ..don’t sleep on this album… actually don’t sleep on any of their albums… you can go deep on all of them and find tons of gems… This album and the Home Again get slept on though…
Great video MDJ! I enjoyed watching this and All For Love is one of my favorite New Edition albums. I love the tracks like Count Me Out, A Little Bit of Love, With You All The Way, Let's Be Friends, Whispers in Bed and Sweet Thing. Keep up the good work and i know you're gonna do the Under the Blue Moon album on your next video. Can't wait for that one!
Incredible album. A ton of incredible tracks that should have been a ingles promoted. Obvious - Count Me Out, A Little Bit Of Love (classic among Black fans), and With You All The Way (incredible live performance) Let’s Be Friends, All For Love, Kickback and Sweet Thing are epic.
Excellent video! You can really tell and hear the group's maturation of their song choices and content on this album. I honestly like this better than the "New Edition" album for A little love is all it takes, sweet thing, let's be friends, and all the others. Cannot wait to hear what you think about "Under a Blue Moon"
Thank you so much for these videos. I’m 43 and was a big fan of New Edition when I was a kid. Back then, I was so interested in knowing everything there was to know about them. They weren’t as mainstream as they should have been (their videos were not consistently on MTV and only some of their songs got heavy radio play). For me, I would just play these cassettes/CDs over and over again and find the occasional article in a magazine about them. With no internet back then, I was happy to find anything I could get. So thank you… I love watching these thoughtful video essays that you come up with. 👍🏻
This album low-key is a great listen with the official singles leading the way: Count Me Out, With You All The Way, A Little Bit Of Love (Is All It Takes). They even performed Let's Be Friends on Soul Train. Even the album's lesser known songs like: Kickback, Tonight's Your Night, Sweet Thing, Whispers In Bed, Who Do You Trust?, All For Love and School are all tite jams. My favorite songs on the album are Kickback, Who Do You Trust, Sweet Thing and Tonight's Your Night.
After New Edition album perspectives will you do album perspectives on all the Bobby Brown , BBD, Johnny Gill & Ralph Tresvant albums & also Ricky bell’s solo album from 2000 & also talk about Ronnie DeVoe’s solo project from 1998
Love the video I’m 27 and I listen to this album everyday with you all the way is my wedding song the entire album you can just let play straight through ❤
A little bit of love is no doubt one of NE top 10 songs, but whispers in bed, kickback, with you all the way, count me out,are bangers to,this was my album my junior year in high school.
To me “count me out” thematically lyrically is the sequel to “cool it now” lol if you watch the video again I think they even brought back the same girl from “cool it now” but production wise and vocally I dare say “count me out” is slightly the better song sonically for me
It's crazy how Under The Blue Moon was basically an entire project just to get out of debt. Geez, I feel the same way about student loans... Based on what I know about their albums, it makes Heartbreak standout so much more because not only was that the group's biggest selling album; it was the FIRST album NE did where they didn't get completely screwed over financially. It just stinks that ALL of the work from the Candy Girl album to Under The Blue Moon was all for nothing. Well, not 'nothing' because it gave them the fame needed to propel Heartbreak (mainly due to Gill's vocals taking the group to the next level) but eventually their own successful solo careers.
all for love is weird in that it feels both more mature AND more bubblegum than their previous two. but it does have some classic songs that i feel get overlooked like whispers in bed, let’s be friends, and a little bit of love
My lowkey favorite album of theirs. Every song is good to me, especially Sweet Thing, A Little Bit Of Love, Count Me Out, Who Do You trust and Let's Be Friends. Bobby Brown said in his autobiography that WDYT was indeed about him post-leaving the group.
In the book Tommy said it was a warning to the group that Jump & Shout was robbing them. Bobby may have stayed in line if NE was getting paid. Jump & Shoot offer Bobby a deal in an attempt to quiet the Browns, but they fired him when things got worse.
Outstanding retrospective (and research) on a classic NE album, MDJ! However, it should be noted that "Let's Be Friends", also my personal favorite track from the album, was actually written by the dudes from Surface, famous for 80s hits like "Shower Me With Your Love", "The First Time", and "Happy".
Will there be retrospectives for Johnny Gill (1983) Johnny Gill - Chemistry(1985) New Edition - Under The Blue Moon (1986) Bobby Brown - King Of Stage (1986) New Edition - Heart Break (1988) Bobby Brown - Don’t Be Cruel (1988) Bell Biv DeVoe - Poison (1990) Johnny Gill (1990) Ralph Tresvant (1990) Bobby Brown - Bobby (1992) Bell Biv DeVoe - Hootie Mack (1993) Johnny Gill - Provocative (1993) Ralph Tresvant - It’s Going Down (1993) B.Brown Posse (1993) New Edition - Home Again (1996) Johnny Gill - Let’s Get The Mood Right (1996) Bobby Brown - Forever (1997) L.S.G. (1998) Bell Biv DeVoe - BBD (2001) L.S.G. 2 (2003) New Edition - One Love (2004) Ralph Tresvant - Rizz Wa Faire (2006) Johnny Gill - Still Winning (2011) Bobby Brown - The Masterpiece (2012) Johnny Gill - Game Changer (2014) Bell Biv DeVoe - Three Stripes (2017) Johnny Gill - Game Changer II (2019) ?
Let’s be friends was the third best song on that album of course behind A little bit of Love & Whispers in bed, but that’s let’s you know how fire this album is
Great album but Bobby should have got more solo spots. His only solo song was so bubblegumish I bet he was so mad recording "Who Do You Trust" lol this album should have showed more growth as they were between the ages of 17-18 at the time.
The albums became more pop & less R&B as they progressed. Candygirl is a teenage album but its funky like King of Stage. All For Love seemed aimed at crossover 80s pop. They rap the least on All For Love.
Let's face it new edition got screwed that was a great group and if they would have been on the up and up maybe bobby wouldn't have left hey nobody wants to work for free...
Bobby said in his book his mom was about the money & like the BET series she applied the most pressure to Jump & Shoot. Jump & Shoot offered Bobby a solo deal in attempt to quiet the Browns, but that didnt work. Bobby then started misbehaving and the rest is history. Had they paid the group Bobby my have never left.
All For Love is my least favorite and like Ricky stated it was a setback album. Those guys were older, more mature young men and they should've been transitioning the sound to reflect instead of holding them in a capsule.
