New Elephant Orphan Calf, Phabeni's First Evening at HERD

Watch elephant orphan, Phabeni during his first evening at the orphanage, starting with him meeting Lammie and getting to know his new woolly partner better. Tigere tells Phabeni he is home now, and encourages him to get used to his new sheep friend, while the young calf chases Lammie around the nursery. Lammie knows bolshy young orphans well and holds her own, cleverly stepping out of reach of the trunk coming at her. Phabeni puts up a fight with Stavros too, as he is still very wild and has been through a lot in the last few days.
Wildlife vet, Dr. Peter Rogers is able to treat the calf after sedating him gently. With the effects of being out in the cold alone, and some starvation and dehydration, the calf needs extra fluids and vitamins. HERD Carer Joshua sits by the elephant's side and heat lamps help to keep the calf warm. Dr Rogers administers Phabeni with fluids with glucose, and then antibiotics, and vitamins, as well as a tranquiliser and sedative to keep him calm and take the edge off of the stress he no doubt feels. Even though Phabeni is receiving milk and is in a safe environment, his little body has been through tremendous stress and the effects of the emotional and physical trauma can have serious implications.
Antibiotics are given to Phabeni, as Dr Rogers notes, as a preventive treatment to ensure the calf doesn't pick up pneumonia from being out in the cold and rain alone. Already, his temperature and blood pressure are very low when Dr Rogers checks them.
HERD Carer Stavros helps feed Phabeni through the night, giving him milk bottles every two hours and watching over him while he sleeps, drinks, explores his environment and plays with his new companions. Our human herd fill in for the family that this little bull has lost, and will do whatever it takes to make him feel at peace while he settles in. You are home now, sweet Phabeni.

Thank you all for supporting this little fellow.🐘Phabeni, is responding well to the care, love and the great treatment, to help stabilise him, for the best chance in his recovery. Phabeni has great determination and after a traumatic event, he’s displaying all his self preservation skills, to assert and protect himself, which will help him realise soon, that he’s safe and secure, so the need for resistance is not needed. I agree. One of the many reasons (and there are a lot!) I love and follow HERD is their openness and honesty. The superb Doctor Rogers was very frank about pneumonia being this little guy's greatest danger and that he would not survive that. None of us wants to even contemplate that but I feel we need to be aware. Baby Elephants can be taken so quickly - I think we all know of at least one Baby who has passed without warning and it's utterly devastating. I'm not being negative but just cautiously optimistic 🙂🤞 In his favour, our new boy is feisty, has the BEST people around him, totally dedicated to not only his survival, but to him eventually joining what we know is a wonderful new family and a great future. Right now his BP and temperature need stabilising but also he's lost his entire family and must have been terrified out there on his own. All this is new and confusing for him. As Adine said, right now it's a day at a time. Just like Khanyisa did, he will hear the Jabulani Herd and their rumbles so that will bring him comfort. Praying for you Sweet Phabeni. You are already in our hearts and those of the exceptional Team at HERD. 🩵🐘🩵🙏

A very informative first night update. It's a real insight to see the hard work, dedication and long hours that goes into saving Phabeni. Learning how the FB community came together and reached out for help just shows how important it is for HERD to have a presence there. You just never know when it will be needed to save one of Africa's precious inheritance. ❤🐘❤

Only Starvos can handle this newborn. The youth can walk faster But the elder knows the road👍🏿

Phabeni is a precious little elephant. So happy that Herd is always ready to help the little orphans. The care the orphans are getting is extraordinary. Thank you Herd and all the carers.🥰

Poor little thing (122 kilos 😂) he must have been exhausted. I hope he will calm down after the first night. I'm very excited to see how he will grow!

Thanksalot for showing this. Wonderful seeing our aggressive species doing good for animals knowing how little it is in comparison to the rest. We manage, through ignorance, carelessness and sheer disregard of all others to cause the EXTINCTION of 150 - 200 entire species every WEEK. Thank you again for showing man behaving as we should with regard to fellow animals.

I think HERD picked Phabeni up just in time to save him. Poor darling baby. The first couple of weeks are critical. He has the best care and once they stabilize his core and blood pressure he will feel so much better. Glad he is drinking bottle milk so well. Lammie is a patient companion.

Poor little baby looked like he was shivering from cold (rectal temp was very low). I'm glad Stavros got the blanket on him. I'm sure the herd already smells his scent and is wondering about the new elephant! Positive energy to Phabeni as he continues on his healing journey!

What a first night, this lil boy is simply adorable, nothing like a little baby in the family to help keep us on our toes and realize what is truly important. Thank you for all you do Herd, and Dr. Rogers, you make our world a better one.

9:10 how interesting. Phabeni had started an hypothermia.. babies are more likely to develop that quickly.. It is good to understand the veterinary background.. If i understand the carer is a man fulfilling the role of a mother. An elephant mother. Wonderful skills

Sweet Baby Beni! Considering all this baby boy has been thru in one day...I think he's doing beautiful! As the days pass and his trust grows he will sense the love he's surrounded with I have no doubt....to put him on a path of happiness. I love his fiestiness and strong will. He is utterly a blessing to us all!! Starvros himself is a true blessing to this little one...we cant thank him enough for his heart of gold! Continued prayers for his health to improve...and we ask the Creator to conitnue to hold this sweet baby in his healing and loving grip. Thank you Herd for the footage of baby boys first days at herd! New blankets are in order!
