Definitely a good bag saver and some specific sizes of boxes

I have MANY boxes in my barn waiting for when I get the garden fence in place and the shavings on the way. It is getting a bit ridiculous, but whatever doesn't go under shavings and raised beds will make a nice bonfire and then I'll have ashes.

On the bag question. You are not alone. My husband is worse than i but we both safe nice plastic bags. I have now found an organization that collects 'singles use bags and they get turned into benches

I’m loving my L. Reuteri yogurt & it is so yummy! I have been using pasteurized because it’s hard to get raw cream/milk. Yes, bags are handy, as are plastic containers! Thanks for sharing & blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦

Your yogurt seems like it turned out well. I’m now trying the l reuteri and l gasseri version from the book. I’ve done some research and l reuteri is good for healing h pylori as well. I love your brewing vessels. I went and looked those up and found smaller versions too. 🥰. When I saw all that cardboard I told Mike oh that’s for a garden, so yeah you’re not the only one excited. Great video as always. Much love and blessings.

We have those lids for our carboys, they are nice, but depending on the pressure build up depends if it pops up. On our mead we had to use duct tape to keep the lids down.
@FermentedHomestead

I’m not looking to block oxygen or build pressure, these are just for the first kombucha ferment

I figured as much. My comment was really for letting others know how they worked for us with mead. Although, I'm talking my husband into getting scobys, he seems on board!
@robindoty7029
@robindoty7029 2 месяца назад
I used to brew kombucha in a hexagonal 5gal glass container I found for a few bucks at Goodwill! The scoby was probably 16 inches wide by 1 inch thick before I reduced the size of the vessel. Thing could have doubled as a comforter 😂 Love the update and watching you do your thang!!

oh the other day in one of your live streams someone asked about fermenting cream with kefir.. i think it can be done but the time limit would be short. since i am making my 36 hour ferments with half and half, and inulin... I've been making my kefir with half and half instead of regular milk and i gotta say... it tastes waaay better with half and half and my kefir culture seems to be fine. but i don't think it doubles as fast as it does in regular milk. for funsies i tried powdered milk for kefir just to see if it could be done for prepping purposes.. and it can. but it comes out so much more vinegary then i like. on the flipside.. i think the whey might actually make a half decent cleaning product because it is THAT vinegary to me.. plus that would put more healthy bacteria into my house.. but i'd have to use it away from the places i ferment i guess. lol. (powdered milk to make kefir makes the grains grow faster then they grow in just milk.)

Try putting a piece of cheesecloth over the tophow do you use the boxes for gardens
@FermentedHomestead
@FermentedHomestead 2 месяца назад
I prefer coffee filters, anything with a looser mesh is easy for fruit flies to get in. I use the boxes to put dirt on, less weeds for a few years

Sometimes you can find a nebor that will let you go in on cows with them by purchasing your cow keeping it with theirs and contribute to the feed. Until your ready to have your own.
@FermentedHomestead

@@FermentedHomestead I am in SW Missouri also and have done this before so you should be able to. The people in this area have always been good to their word thus far. I would but I am no where near ready for cows.
@deannemory1568
@deannemory1568 2 месяца назад
I have also had a neighbor either pay to keep their cows on the property and fix the fencing themselves. Sometimes you can barter and they will trade services and clear the first fields. Trade animals for it those kind of things.There is an Amish store in Stotts city I can usually get pint jars for 8.95 a dozen without lids and rings also. Its not a big store but I got I think it was 8 half gallon jars with lids for about 11 dollars and lots of spices. Their tomato plants right now are 4 for 1.99 in case you are near there. I think its name is kuntry store and I believe they have a web site so you don't waste a trip.

I bought an L Reuteri starter to make happy yogurt but when I opened it the instructions said I needed to add a prebiotic sold separately. Is that true? There’s not enough prebiotic in the milk?
@FermentedHomestead
@FermentedHomestead 2 месяца назад
It is recommended to add the prebiotic as food for the bacterial. I would imagine it’s because the bacteria does not naturally occur in milk ferments so it needs a boost, but that’s my total guess

That hole in the lid is probably for an airlock?
@FermentedHomestead
@FermentedHomestead 2 месяца назад
Yes it is but an airlock wouldn’t be used for kombucha. I just want to find out if that small opening is enough or if I should just skip the lid altogether
