We received 3 new feats in Fizban's Treasury of Dragons. These are updates to the UA Draconic Options feats, and I was pleasantly surprised at the updates as they are largely improvements. I was a little bummed about how weak the Chromatic one feels in comparison. What do you think?

The thing about the gift of the chromatic dragon is that, while there are spells that are better, this can be used in tandem with those spells.
@Xynth25
@Xynth25 2 года назад
End of the day with Feats being as expensive as they are as an opportunity cost, Gift of the Chromatic Dragon is objectively weaker than any of the 4 main martial feats (PAM/GWM/SS/CBE) that someone looking for a damage steroid would go with. I love the concept of the Feat but its lack of scaling and limited use leave it pretty lacking on that front. The defensive part of the feat is nice but is still very situationally dependent and you'd probably be better off still taking an offensive feat with how the underlying mechanics of the game function.

@@BelongsintheTrash The problem with that is that RAW you only apply the bonus damage to one weapon of your two weapons. Just one more example of lack of TWF support in 5e. You'd be equally-well served offensively by taking Dual Wielder instead with the added bonus of the +1 AC that doesn't require a reaction to use. Thematically I love the Dragon Paladin idea and you absolutely should ask for the feat to apply to both weapons when you use it.
@Alwayz114
@Alwayz114 2 года назад
I think "Half Feats" are called that because in a manner of thinking, the 'cost' of a Feat is 2 Ability Score Points. So a Half Feat 'costs' half since you still get a +1, albeit often limited to which score

@@jcdenton2187 The one issue is that it needs a lot of attacks. 2 attacks from a Paladin will be fine-good up to lvl 7-9. Polearm Master will extend it a bit further, but after that it starts to fall off compared to other options.

@TheChocoXCheese

IMO the Chromatic dragonborn one is actually really good. Spells that increase damage of attacks (Hunter's Mark, Hex, Divine Favor, Elemental Weapon, etc.) usually don't scale with level and/or are concentration. Chromatic Infusion may only be a d4, but it stacks with other buff spells and will last for its full duration. Meanwhile, Reactive Resistance gives you the best part of the Absorb Elements spell. That will save you anywhere between 2-6 castings of a first level spell.
@Melorific
@Melorific 2 года назад
People really underrate how much of a damage boost a d4 actually is. Most weapons do anywhere between 10 and 15 damage on average (depends on your strength/dex score). A d4 is basically a 15-25% damage boost on every hit. Honestly, SS/GWM is probably better, but this is more reliable (SS/GWM really want accuracy boosts) and work with any weapon. The only really stupid thing is that this can only be done once per long rest. I really wish this feat gave you an amount of charges equal to your proficiency modifier, and let you spend 1 charge for either the infusion or the resistance. That would've made the feat a lot better.
@skeletalgaming4198
@skeletalgaming4198 2 года назад
Also, all of his arguments for why the Feat is bad hinge on the idea of "there are spells that do this but better." Did the fact that the Feat can apply to Martial weapons maybe not tip you off that this might be a Feat more suited to, say, a Martial class character who might really benefit from the Resistance and extra damage?
@TheChocoXCheese
@TheChocoXCheese 2 года назад
@@skeletalgaming4198 Also, there really aren't any spells that do it better. Hex and Hunter's Mark are often used by even high level characters, melee and spellcaster alike, to boost damage on spells with multiple attack rolls/multiple melee attacks. But both of those are concentration and don't scale. The only similar spell that I can think of that actually scales is Holy Weapon, but that's like 5th level and concentration.
@Melorific
@Melorific 2 года назад
@@TheChocoXCheese Yeah the weapon part is basically just a better divine favor. Even the damage type argument doesn't really hold up because there's only a few monsters that are resistant to all elements. The resistance part can be interpreted as "There's a 1st spell that does it better". Since absorb elements gives resistance to all instances of damage that turn. But this feat is also giving you 2-6 castings of said worse 1st level spell without using other resources. Other feats only give you a single free casting before you have to use spell slots. And let's not forget that Absorb elements is one of the best 1st level spells that actually is useful throughout the entire game. I'd rather have that Gem, that gives me a hellish rebuke with knockback.

The Chromatic Dragon weapon infusion is fine. Considering Hunter's mark/Hex is +1d6 on one specific target, requiring you to use your bonus action once again to switch whenever your target drops to 0, and that it's concentration. Gift on the Chromatic Dragon however, is just +1d4 damage for your bonus action once. Doesn't eat your concentration, doesn't cost anything when you wanna target different creatures. Just activate and it's there for the combat.

The gem dragon feat is amazing if you have an odd stat total. It's free damage on a reaction, with a chance for more damage and a free disengage. The chromatic feat is bad. A "free" d4 for one combat, once per day is not worth half a feat. Monks wouldn’t get quite as much use out of it, because Flurry uses unarmed strikes, and this has to be placed on a weapon. But I do agree this feat is low key really good. Elemental magic applied to weapons has a lot of flavor potential, and application against monsters with elemental weaknesses.

I think one of the biggest buffs to Gift of Metallic Dragon is the consistency and I’m surprised you didn’t mention it. You don’t have to rely on any luck and won’t ever waste a usage of this feature. The UA version still consumed a usage even if you didn’t raise their AC high enough to block the attack. Now that it is a hard number, you can guarantee that it will block the attack.

Half feats are called such because a feat "costs" 2 +1 ability score increases (or a +2), so a feat that gives a +1 is essentially refunding half the cost. As a result, the actually unique part of those feats only need to be roughly half as powerful as a feat where you pay the full cost in order to still be worthwhile. When you effectively half the cost you should expect roughly half the benefit as well. Hence "half feat". Hope this helps!

Regarding Gift of the Chromatic Dragon's damage being only 1d4 and not being able to be upcast, I think you have to keep in mind that it lasts a minute and applies to every attack. This means it's an especially good fit at higher levels for, say, fighters who keep getting more attacks as they level up. Suddenly your dueler's 1d8+5+2 is 1d8+1d4+5+2, so that's a 22% increase in average damage output.

I'd rather concentrate on Bless than Divine Favor, so Chromatic Infusion not using concentration is important. This would actually be a decent pick for a paladin, especially with PAM. Reactive Resistance can be used 2 to 6 times, compared to the one casting of Absorb Elements you'd get from something like Magic Initiate. Telekinetic Reprisal is force-based Hellish Rebuke with a shove, and you get 2 to 6 uses. That's actually not bad. Works well for both melee types and those avoiding melee. Protective Wings is Defensive Duelist with limited uses, but you can apply it to someone next to you. Probably a fair trade, but I do like at-will abilities like Defensive Duelist.

@@jugujugu1 Yup I totally agree! Which is why I wasn't saying it was the best feat for martials, but way better than Gem or Metallic. Also, the reason why I was comparing it to +2 Str was to show that any +1 bonus in any stat is a massive gain for anyclass, so getting a +2.5 on damage is the opposite of "hardly relevant". The differences being that DD can be used every round, no limit on uses, but Metallic Gift can be used on any attack (not just melee and can be not wielding a finesse weapon) and on an ally ala Protection Fighting Style but is gated in uses per rest.

My main issue with the Chromatic Gift is that the infusion part is linked to long rests and not proficiency bonuses. Maybe it's cause they don't want martial classes to have magic damage at level 1? I don't know...I was really hoping to use this feat to play a pseudo-Blood Hunter, but having one use of a d4 isn't very good. Yes I know d4's are underrated but considering that you only get it once per long rest, it's gonna make me question whether I want to use it at a particular moment or save it for a possibly greater threat and then said threat never showing up and the feature being wasted for that long rest. I'd be way more understanding if the damage scaled with your level but it doesn't; just a flat d4 even at level 20. Really hope they reprint it but I know it'll never happen.

If you ever want to play with some unique styles that simply aren't present in newer editions, look back into some 3.5E stuff and translate it into whatever edition you want to play in. A good example is from the 3.5E book Dragon Magic, the Dragonfire Adept Prestige Class (Dragon Magic book, page 24), in which non-dragonborn PCs get both breath weapons and skills/abilities related to dragons, which escalates to higher levels of insanity and hilarity. As for wanting to play a spellcaster/healer as a Barbarian, look into The Complete Warrior handbook for 3.5E for the Prestige Class called Rage Mage (Complete Warrior, page 72) in which you can enter a form of rage called Spell Rage which allows you to enter rage to acquire the temporary constitution score boost from Rage while still being able to cast magic at lower levels, and even getting to empower and boost spells with Rage at higher levels. Nothing like a screaming lunatic that uses magic to self-immolate while punching enemies in the face with fireballs.

I think some of them do. A dragon's breath is not magic, but Cure Wounds is. I think Gift of the Chromatic Dragon would work regardless, but the feats that quite literally give you a spell to use wouldn't. Gem Dragon is telekinetic in nature, so I think that's fine as well. (Until they release a Psion class or otherwise that would change if it counts as "magic" or not).

If a spell does not use a spell slot it is psionic and works in antimagic fields.any effect that is magic but is not a spell is psionic and works in an antimagic field. @CallenExile
@CallenExile 2 года назад
@@jackobanter4031 That is absolutely not how it works in 5e. Antimagic Field: "Spells and other magical effects, except those created by a deity, are suppressed in the sphere and cannot protrude into it." @jackobanter4031
@jackobanter4031 2 года назад
@@CallenExile What is the Weave? The Weave, controlled currently by Mystra, is the way in which magic presented itself to beings for their use. After the events of Karsus's folly Mystra, the reincarnation of Mystral, created the concept of spell slots. This was the limiter that she placed for all spell casters that prevented to much damage to the Weave and casting of 10th, 11th, and 12th level spells. The main points to this is the Weave is the source of all magic, spell slots are the way that casters interact with the Weave, and spell slots aren't just a mechanic in the rules, they are a concept in the worlds in dnd, people in game actually know what spell slots are. If you are not using a spell slot then you are not interacting with the Weave, you have to be pulling the power from somewhere, this is know as Psionics. Racial spell casting abilities (Duergar Magic and Infernal Legacy), Ki spell casting abilities (Flames of the Phoenix and Rush of the Gale Spirits), and Eldritch Invocations (Armor of Shadows and Mask of Many Faces) are all abilities that allow the casting/effects of spells without interaction with the Weave, thusly are Psionics, and all work in an Antimagic Field.

@thecharmer5981
@thecharmer5981 2 года назад
I think proficiency would be a little much, you would basically have an extra d4 on attacks in most fights without concentration, as they rarely last more then a minute and most people don’t do a lot of fights in one day. If you changed it to a d6 it would automatically better then a lot of spells that boost damage, as it’s to all your attacks with that weapon, without concentration. That makes it better then hex and hunters mark, while also stacking with both of those
@AndICanTalk2
@AndICanTalk2 2 года назад
@@thecharmer5981 well given you can only do it once a day for minute a dont think it feels that much more powerful than a spell that can often be cast more often as you go up levels. I gotta disagree about the Chromatic feat being bad. Consider a lvl 9 character (PB 4) with 3 attacks. Assume the combat lasts for 6 rounds and you hit 3/4 attacks. That averages 33.75 damage per day (3*6*0.75*2.5). If you have more attacks or the combat lasts longer, it could easily be more. Assuming that 3/4 fail the save (which is high) it averages 31.5 damage per day (9*3+4.5*1). At later levels, Chromatic easily pulls ahead for fighters due to their many attacks. Other characters it might fall behind, but getting failed Str saves on enemies that are hitting you in melee range seems challenging as well. It is a toss up whether the +1 stat or the damage resistance is more worthwhile. I would never take it on a character that didn't have a bunch of attacks (fighter is particularly good), but the Chromatic feat seems perfectly fine to me.

I think your doing a massive injustice to the chromatic. At level one the average damage, assuming you hit all attacks, is 30 damage (3x10) while the gem does 10 (5×2). At max damage, assuming failed saves and all attacks hit you have chromatic at 40 (4×10) and gem at 32 (16×2). At level five the chromatic still does more damage with 60 average (3×20) and 80 max (4×20) and the gem being 30 on average (10×3) and 48 at max (16x3). Not to mention it's usually far easier to land an attack than an enemy fail a save. Then you add 2 to 6 uses of absorb elements to save you from many later game threats like dragons, elementals, enemy spell casters, giants and the like. Where as the gem dragons defense is maybe you cost an enemy a turn by pushing then back 10 feet, but likley not. The only thing I give the gem dragon is the +1 to spell casting stat of your choice, which is almost useless for martial classes. I take chromatic gift over gem any day of the week.
@leodouskyron5671
@leodouskyron5671 2 года назад
I agree that the Chromatic is useful but the idea that the creature just pushed back can come right back is FAR from true and as you know you have the gift you can stack it with other when you are struck spells and effects to stack up damage. Also, anything that is a half feat and breaks the Claw/claw/Bite into just a claw even - quarter of the time is just as impactful (as a half feat) as the chromatic can be. The metallic feat is better then both.
@jackobanter4031
@jackobanter4031 2 года назад
@@leodouskyron5671 you can not stack it with other spell that trigger when you are struck, as they both require your one reaction per turn. I don't recall the gem gift knocking prone so it is definitely feasible to think a creature can get back into melee with you that turn. Also metallic arguable on better. Cure wounds is a great spell, but its not the only way to get the spell and the wings are 100% less effective than the shield spell, and the shield master feat I believe it's called. The one I'm thinking off is reaction to give disadvantage one an incoming attack role to an ally in range, effectively a -5. Metallic is still a good feat, but not as good as chromatic.

Metallic is just making the parry feat bad so I’m not a huge fan of it. I actually like chromatic dragon gift as it’s 1d4 is stackable and you can use it on classes that don’t have absorb elements. Ergo a level 1 warcleric with a turn of set up you could have a great sword on a human Variant that does 2d6+2d4+3 twice per turn. If you hit with both that averages out too (34 damage per turn. At level 1!!!!!!!) 8+6+3x2

The only martial classes who could reliably use those spells tho are full casters. Even a half caster could use this because it's its own resource. But it's honesty imo meant for the fighter and the fighter is likely why it was only a d4. I personally would have still preferred the d6 but I don't think what we have is bad at all.
