Thank you! Loved your perspective on peoples' tastes in the balance-of-strange. It's my first encounter with Oyeyemi (clearly brilliant) and I've been reading Parasol with a "what am I not getting....?" filter. Now, instead of looking for the trail of breadcrumbs, I'll just buckle into my seat and savor the ride through the hall of mirrors funhouse I've found myself in.
SOLD! I have read 4 of Oyeyemi’s books and love the “here we go!!!” feeling I get with them. I loved when you said the book is a shapeshifter (here we go!!!) and then that there is a plot of sorts and also the mention of maybe criminal activity. I’m really looking forward to reading it, yours is the first review I’ve seen.
It was my first by her but I recognise what you mean by the "here we go" feeling. She is confident about what she is doing and that carries the reader along.
I usually love the books that ride that line. Weird, experimental, edgy all work for me for the most part. (PS I read I AM I AM I AM and had a deep visceral reaction. Resonated to my very core. I kept wondering: WAS THIS WRIITEN JUST FOR ME? Absolutely incredible.
I’ve never read Oyeyemi. This sounds interesting. I think I remember that you enjoy the works of Isabel Waidner. How does this book compare to their work weirdness wise.
I noticed there was a blurb on the cover from Ali Smith and I am a complete fanboy of her (have read everything published I think!) so are there similarities with Smith’s work? I think I’m going to get it anyway just for the amazing cover art!
