I’ve just bought my very first boots, they’re nothing amazing (Graf Davos) but I’m just so excited to not wear giant plastic things from rental! I’m still super nervous about even skating forward and have just started lessons from the bottom but I feel so at home on the ice. Thank you for your videos!!

The stiffness of boots are not consistent between brands as I've noticed. When I was looking at new skates, the Jackson Elle (Stiffness 35) was just as stiff as the Edea Overture (Stiffness forty something). That's why wheb I first looked online I thought the Elles were going to be too soft, but I discussed it with Jackson themselves and they said it was fine for a singles and even the doubles!
@ImoneOnIce

Couldn’t have agreed more! It’s so dependent on the skater and it varies so much between brands.

Hey, I'm an Aussie skater too! I'm in Sydney and I've been struggling a little since figure skating isn't super common in Aus bc of the weather and such, which makes rinks scarce and gear EXPENSIVE. As I type, I'm in the process of re-lacing my first pair of skates that I bought today - Jackson Freestyles with the fusion sole, $549!! my bank account is in pieces lol. How have you found it where you're from? I'm kind of tempted to move to a colder state tbh, maybe it's better or at the very least more common in Tassie since it actually snows there lol 😂 Your videos are super inspiring btw, I love that you're keeping a positive attitude even when you're feeling discouraged. I'm starting to skate at 16, and you being consistently passionate as an adult beginner motivates me to work towards my goals ❤️ I'm learning that it's never too late to pursue something I love. Thank you.

I just went back to skating. Did so for 2 years as a teen. Got to double loops and had my skates hand made, to every curve. They were a small business breakthrough in the 90s. Fast forward. Started random public skating and couldnt as my landing boot went. So GAMS are going out of business. They were revolutionary back in the day. i got them for 189, Half off! Strengh 60. They are gorgoeous and i love them more than the hand molded ones. I am going to go for lessons again at 37. It feels good. So fun. Love this sport. Able to keep my jackson coronation ace blades so that was a save. Happy skating everyone. Breaking in is not bad. They make them so nice now.

Hey it's great you've got new skates!! I had thought in your past videos that you were seriously pushing the boundary of your Mystiques, although we all have to start somewhere! I started with £20, 2nd hand RF4s which were the wrong size, but I appreciate my Ice Flys all the more now! Looking good on your first couple of outings with your new babies, don't forget that the rocker will probably be different on your new blades so as well as getting them aligned correctly you'll have to learn to spin on your new blade profile too. It took me almost a year to get 100% used to my new rocker going from coronation ace to gold seal (although that change is pretty extreme). Finally where is the first rink you are on? I don't remember other videos being filmed there? It is big and QUIET! Normally you're trying to avoid crashing into kids in your videos! Skate at that first rink more!!! Good luck with the rest of the breaking in process! :-)
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
Thanks girl!! It's going to be a work in progress for sure, I completely agree, in fact it's a good lesson in self-control for me :) It's reassuring to know you've experienced the ups/downs that come with transitioning between skates and have progressed so much! OMG so this is a newer rink that's recently been built and my gosh the morning freestyle sessions (6-10am) are so quiet, it was unnerving at first because I could literally hear every mistake no matter how small xD But honestly I feel like that environment has made me focus a lot harder on improving my edge control/speed and technique. Thank you, looking forward to seeing your progress too!! x
@superpuddleducks
@superpuddleducks 5 лет назад
@@ImoneOnIce Wow, yes that new rink is amazing and a great opportunity!! Yes it can be un-nerving on the ice by yourself (the thought of "if I die how long will it take someone to find me? lol") but it can be hugely liberating as well especially if you can put your own music on really loud!! I've had many happy lunchtime session at my "new" rink (2 years old, and there was a temporary rink for 8 years previous to that) but it has just been taken over by a management that only believes in hockey so prices are going up and sessions are getting fewer/ cancelled at short notice meaning its getting much busier and harder to take videos. They are talking about maybe closing one of the two pads (currently there's one for public and one for hockey/ figure) and there's not any skating this weekend due to them covering it over for a boxing match (crying emoji)!! .......Anyway! On the positives I've decided literally a couple days ago to compete at the British Adult Championships next year - I had done it the previous 2 years and didn't this year (2018) as I was out of work, but I've decided to try and throw together a basic routine by Easter so that (and my axel) are my focus for 2019, meaning combo jumps, doubles, and my 2nd field moves test are on hold for a bit longer! What are your goals for 2019 after your skates are broken in and familiar? x
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
Hahaha that's a valid point! Once the receptionist saw me walk out and was like "I didn't even realise someone was on the rink...". Oh dear, I hope the new management realise they need to be way more inclusive! That's so exciting!!! I think the comp will be an important time to help you grow and set up for your 2019 goals :) Thinking about competing gives me goosebumps :D I'm wishing you all the very best, I'm sure you'll work hard and achieve all that you want to! I would like to land my Lutz consistently and gain a lot more height and fluidity with all my singles, land my axel and begin doubles (fingers and toes crossed), I'd also love to get my scratch cleaner and get 5-8 revs on my camel spin :) A lot to work on but hopefully I can afford more lessons and ice time :D xx

Had a trauma for 2 weeks or so, haha :D I just wish sometimes the coaches would say this stuff to us beforehand.. now my coach knows me a bit more and when she sees I'm getting frustrated over something (even if it's something I'm attempting for like a second time :P) she's gonna come up to me and say "it's ok, don't think too much about it, don't get frustrated, focus on the positives" :D Are you also a person that loves to make quick progress so when you get the feeling of 'hitting a wall' you get super annoyed, angry etc.? :D

I have reeaallly cheap figure skates that I’ve had for years and only used a few times. They are DBX brand and I don’t think they’re the worst quality out there since I did have a bit of a break-in period when I first got them. But I don’t see them lasting too much longer once I start learning elements. I was wondering if you feel like these figure skates have held up well and are, in fact, growing with you? I know u didn’t start long ago but I think after u get used to your new skates, maybe see if u can speed up your spins bc ik when I do a camel or a toe loop it helps when I put more force n speed into it. Idk if u already do that I’m just going off this video. But u are progressing so fast n I’m happy to see people going into figure skating, I hope u keep going! Also is it just me or whenever my coach isn’t looking I land jumps or do spins well n then I show her and it ends up looking like trash. Even in competitions I feel like I’m doing bad which tbh I probably am.
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
Thank you for the advice! I'm definitely going to be working on getting my speed and control up, funnily enough sometimes doing something fast without thinking about it helps me execute it correctly haha :) That's the thing about elements isn't it? You know you can do them without coach/judges watching but the hard part that everyone can relate to, is executing them in front of people! Keep working hard xx

@@ImoneOnIce Oh nice to hear that! :)) I hope you'll have lots of fun with your new skates! I ordered my first pair of figure skates last week, with a stiffness of 30, I hope that's not too stiff for a beginner because I'm wanting to start skating as well (I ordered Riedell 119 Emerald) Also, another question if you've got the time to answer :)) So you did start with those stiffness 15 boots and were you learning your first jumps (like a Salchow or Toe-Loop) and spins with those? Didn't they give too little (can you say too little..? I'm sorry I'm German my english is certainly not the best xD) support for that kind of stuff? I mean I'm already getting a little freaked out at the thought of a Waltz jump, a scratch spin or stuff like that with a stiffness 30 like my skates will have if I'll get there one day :')
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
Thank you! That's exciting!!! I'm sure that should be fine for you (tbh it'll last you for a decent time without the boot dying like mine hahah) but I recommend going into a skate shop to get your feet assessed and the boot looked at when it does come in, just to make sure that there aren't any issues :) As for the second question, I bought my first pair of skates around when I began crossovers. My boots were good enough to support me from when I first learned jumps until about 5-6 months after I bought them (I think I was up to loop jumps and scratch spins). I'm not an expert on this but I reckon the 30 stiffness should be decent enough for you, it all depends on how much you skate/weigh/skill level and probably how hard you skate xD It's lots of factors... But I have a Q&A video about it if that helps at all, good luck! x

How have you liked your Risport Rf3 almost two years later? I started skating as an adult skater just over a year ago. I've bought several pairs of used skates. Among them, an old Risport Laser model fit the best. I'm considering buying Rf3, but think they may or may not be too stiff for me. My left ankle was injured years ago and is not quite like the right one. It wobbles more, so I thought more ankle support may not be a bad idea.

I really like my Risports! They've held up solid and I've even started doubles in them, not to mention drilling them with learning the Axel jump. It's certainly on the stiffer side but it does mould to the foot well!

How do you like your risport rf3? I have skated in jacksons and really like them coz they're more sturdy than other brands I've tried but the boots are too high for me. Would love to try risport.

I love them! Much better for me than the Jacksons were. They have a lot of padding, a wide toe box and are great quality.

The brand of my skates are Spirit 2 I think, are they good skates? Just wondering because I haven’t been skating for long!
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
I haven't heard of the Spirit 2 actually, so I won't be able to give you too much advice! Regardless, as long as your ankles are supported and secure in the boot and you're not feeling unstable this is a good indicator of the boot quality for your level. Perhaps you could ask someone from a skate shop? x

I was told that Risports are for larger toes but Jacksons are a bit narrow aren't they? Were you wearing a wider version of the Mystiques?

How long did it take you in the end to break the boots in? I just started to break in my rf3 pros after skating in boots with literally no stiffness at all and it's such a change. I was happy that after an hour I was able to do a waltz jump again but I was not confident enough to try my other jumps since I couldn't bend my knee that much. It's just a little frustrating.
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
I think I'm still breaking them in to some extent with new skills but I adjusted to them fully after about 4 weeks (12-16 hours of skating). Have you tried baking/heat-moulding them? it might significantly reduce that break in period. I had to do multiple edge drills to get more knee bend (I actually found it easier to bend in the RF3 pros than my Jacksons). Relacing them every 45-60 mins of skating and practicing knee bends off ice helped too! x

@@ImoneOnIce Thank you for the answer. After three weeks I am now at around 10 hours of skating in them and they started to feel normal this week which is great. And yes, I had them heat molded and it was a very good decision. I just had like two small blisters from when the laced loosened for half an hour.

Hi, I’m looking to get risports rf3 as well, I’m in risports rf4 at the moment but apparently rf3 are slightly wider. How do your skates boot size compares to your shoe size? My feet are 265mm at their longest, I have 275 at the moment but that’s 10mm extra I wonder if I should go for the 270mm instead
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
Hmm funnily enough my boots are 240mm from heel to toe (my feet are 230mm long)! The 230mm boot felt way too snug for me and my skate tech agreed, the 240mm felt just right but not too loose. I'm not sure how it might vary for you but I liked having a bit of extra room! It's also helpful because your toes will shift a little during jumps and spins so you have a small amount of space I guess?

How on earth do you get an empty rink!? I just started skating and public skate...packed....lessons packed as its multiple age levels on the ice at once. I dont need an empty rink but room to move around without worry of the more advanced skaters who are weaving in and out at high speeds between the others trying to learn would be nice

im confused, so the stiffer and lower ankle support is for a higher level skating? what about the blades and the toe piks ? whats good for intermediate level ? i want something that i can carry on with me until i start spins and double jumps. i just bought the jacksons mystique cuz they told me i can do jumps and spins with it. i dont want to keep changing skates :(
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 4 года назад
Hi there! The stiffer boot will provide better support for the higher skills to protect from high impact etc. The lower ankle allows for more movement which can help with ankle bend and turns etc. I think the blades are heavily dependent on the skater. I did spins and jumps on my Mystiques and didn't have too many issues until the boot broke down. Maybe watch my Q&A video? I think I speak about this there! x

Queen bee - I've found this guide to be helpful: www.kinziescloset.com/skate-comparison-guide.html I'm also shopping for a first pair of skates. I was going to go with the Mystique, but I think I'm leaning more toward the Artiste now. I've tried on Reidells and they are too wide in the heel for me. Jacksons have a narrower heel so I'm interested to see how they fit (going to try some on tomorrow).

Do yoou find these skates more comfortable now that they are broken in? i have the mystiques and i find them very painful. i think part of my issue is i have high arches in my feet. im trying to decide if its worth getting different skates.

@hannahw4883 5 лет назад
I have quite high arches and my fitters were adamant that I go with the rf3 at my last visit. much more supported and not painful at all.
@ImoneOnIce
@ImoneOnIce 5 лет назад
I think the Mystiques had a period (once I had skated for a month in them) that they were quite comfortable! But as they broke down and I had to lace tighter and tighter, I certainly was in pain (the balls of my feet are very wide and my arches are stupidly high as well). The RF3 pros are definitely much more comfy than they were! There are still spots in the boot that I feel can be little annoying but I have yet to heat mould them which would resolve this issue. The extra stiffness and the padding is making a big difference!

How in the world do you get the entire rink to yourself??? Even when other people are present, there are only say 5 or less !? Must be nice. My rink is always crowded.... public, freestyle whatever. Hope you understand how lucky you are. Second thing - at the end when you are ending your session and holding the camera at arms length...... Your face is WAY to BIG in frame. Get yourself a selfie stick or something. How can you not see this during edit. Do you stand two inches away from someone in person during conversation?? Seriously - it is very unsettling to watch! Back the Camera Up !!!
