For all the reasons you said, I went the AR10 route over the SCAR as badly as I wanted one. But, with the money I saved, I could actually afford a high quality optic & suppressor so.... win win?
What ar 10 did you go with? I actually have both, the new scar and an ar10 fallout from black rain. The ar 10 is so heavy, after 30 40 shots it’s beating up my shoulder, it’s got a freaking 22 inch barrel and it’s not any more accurate than the scar
@@johndoe-sh6bi I grabbed a Sig 716i. Pretty lightweight considering (16" barrel, DI system) and reliable. Never know, might have a 277 FURY conversion kit for it one day too.
I just wish CZ would release a Bren 2 in 308 in the U.S. I really don't know why they don't even send a limited run. There is a big market for people who don't want to pay that stupidly high price for a modern battle rifle. I guess I'll just wait for the Sig Spear to be more available.

I have had the 17S for years now, bought it back when they were in the mid $2000 range. I use the HK sling attachment and rch is just something you adapt to just like an AK. It’s a rifle I will never sell because I enjoy it so much.
17's used to be in the mid-$2000s?? Well damn, that's a price I could actually justify paying for one. Now that they're in the high-3k range it'll never happen for me.
@@spyderstryke3769 Devil Dog Concepts. Hard Charging Handle at 145 to 160 bucks. Three versions, depending where on the upper receiver rail you want to mount it. Works on all standard AR designs, and functions great. 5 different handle styles and many colors too.
I love the SCAR platform. I bought a black 17S over 10 years ago and have since added an FDE 16S and a 20S to my collection. I tried the KDG rail on the 17 for a while but removed it. Aside from the Geissele Super SCAR triggers in the 16 and 17, I'm totally fine with them in their out-of-the-box configuration. Battlefield Las Vegas supposedly has a select-fire 16 with over 250k rounds through it with minimum maintenance. That's WAY more than any AR could hope to achieve.
Why did you remove the extra rail? Curious, I've toyed with adding one to my 17. However I'm a little cautious about messing with tightening the barrel back down. I have a torque wrench but heard a couple of ppl say they've had issues with the barrel screws coming loose despite setting to the correct 60lb torque.
I just concluded that it wasn't necessary for my purposes. It added weight to the fore-end and ruined the original aesthetic of the rifle. It was also overpriced, damaging to the resale value, and would be a hassle to install for many people. It was a waste of time and money looking back. I have the same opinion about putting an ACR stock on them and most of the other overpriced crap you can buy for them. The average owner/shooter would be much better off spending the money on a quality optic or more ammo. Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20, as they say. At any rate, if you do decide to mess with it, be aware that the correct torque value for the 6 main barrel screws is 60 inch-pounds, not 60 foot-pounds. 60 ft-lbs would be a lot, like if you were torquing the cylinder heads on an LS v8 or something.BTW, it is a good idea to check them occasionally. Mine weren't evenly torqued from the factory, but they have never come loose again after fixing that, so who knows? I have about 8k rounds through my 17. @@user-jv4ic8rh4dEdited to add that 60 inch-pounds is equal to 5 foot-pounds.
@@JR15A2 thank you for sharing your experience. Of the same mind set. No, to the "better" trigger I checked the factory trigger with my mantis x. You can see a graph of muzzle movements thru the trigger press. The graph was literally flat on basic Magpul bipod and a sock filled with rice. Even made hits out to 935 yards cold bore. I've never changed stocks, actually other then putting on my NF 2.5-10 and acro P2. 10k rounds M80 & 1.5k 168gr fed GMM (patterned the best fory barrel and suppressor combo) in storage. I buy more when I shoot. I have +/-5k thru it since 2019. I've only put in the adj gas valve (discartor) & muzzle device for my can. Yeah I ment inch lbs but didn't type it. Well, I appreciate it. I've gone back and forth on the extended rail for 2 years now. Unless you have a used one you'd sell? Lol Then I might be persuaded. But yeah, what do I really get in extra capabilities? For the price it's not much value.
You gotta admit, the tactical Ugg boot stock is iconic looking. The SCAR looks weird without it but I bet it’s more functional and comfortable with an AR stock.
It might be because I'm a sucker for the SCAR 17, but I think it's worth mentioning that while the Revolution is awesome, it's not nearly as battle proven as the SCAR is.
@@sde9023, yes, better. It is a bit more accurate, less recoil, not as aggressive as a muzzle device, and is usable with most AR-15 parts. It is just a better rifle.
@@kingbaldwiniv5409 Hey friend! Do you have a POF Revolution? If you do, I wanted to know, how reliable and durable it is? I ask that because I want to acquire a battle rifle, but where I live guns and ammo are expensive and I need to evaluate my choices very carefully before I import anything. Here in Brazil 762 ammo is not very high quality, so I wanted to know how well the gun tolerates low quality ammunition, also, does it handle the heat and humidity well?
Colion is hands down the biggest shill in the firearms industry. I've seen a couple videos of his where he spends 4 minutes talking about all the terrible features/things on a gun and then end it all by saying something like "But despite all that...........I love it so much and it's so perfect. I wouldn't change anything about it."
I recently sold off my last M14 EBR chassis stock from SAGE, and I took some of the proceeds of that sale and purchased a never fired 2 year old S17S. After watching your video I think that I will take some of the left over $ and replace the butt stock, and I will probably add a forward grip like the one you have. I appreciate your video, and the ideas - thanks.
*"Cause I like Cool Chit"* Love that! 🤣 Would love to have one of those *with your mods!* Partial to the B5 furniture myself. *Oh,.. and it's F'n Hot! and it's F'n Hot!*
HA . . I SO remember the " Let's go out the Lobby " intermission at the theaters with my parents . . . and Yes I am old as shit . . . but still . . the fact you put that out there . . just made me like you even more . . . AWESOME SAUCE !!!! . . . .So - Should I get the SCAR or not ? ? ?
Love the ugg boot on my 17s, swapped it out for the ACR, and immediatley swapped it back. Surprised not to hear a mention of the shit trigger. Did FN put a better trigger in? Geissele SS trigger was my first upgrade. Haven't been tagged by my 17s charging handle, but my BREN 805 S1 sure nailed the shit out of my thumb one day. I never used to hold by the magazine well until I got a 14.5 in BREN2. The handgaurd gets hot as hell, so it got me into the habit.
Definitely believe the ugg boot looks way better than the stock he put on. As for the trigger, I got the nrch version, I think the trigger is fine, but could definitely be better for the price you pay.
@@michaelmunozjr5469 I got a Belgian made 17s I purchased about 10 years ago. The trigger was awful. The ACR stock looked better on the SCAR, but was no were near as comfy (ugg boot cheek rizer is better) . I had read in a forum about the factory polymer endplate aids in some of the recoil, and a metal end plate can cause canted screws. Mine had loosened a little and one was a little canted. I just torked them back down, and check them while cleaning.
Accurate, lightweight, soft recoil, reliable. New version solves the charging handle flaw and now the only complaint you can have is if you buy a bad mount. Is it worth 3k? It outperforms ar style rifles and most other rifles at that price point so if you want high quality then I can’t recommend it enough. Buy a good optic and mount, use it as a battle rifle, not for cqb or sniping and it won’t let you down
Appreciate your content man. So many guntubers are just paid commercials for subpar firearms that ignore or downplay design flaws. It's nice to know there is a guntuber that won't sugarcoat it and kiss the manufacturers asses.
do note Socom requested a weapon with a reciprocating charging handle. and Socom didn't like the army's m4 because they kept running the m4's hard. The Army didn't have that issue and Socom could not get the blueprint rights from the army to make a change. So Socom went to FN and had the Scar program made.
Man, all these AR-10 designs make me really wish the DPMS Gen 2 format caught on. It's like a more elegant POF Rogue/Revolution... before the Rogue/Revolution.
I have a SCAR 16 because I didn't want to play magazine rodeo again. I have boatload of AR mags. My brother got the SCAR 17 and love it. He recently got a surpressor for it and it is MUCH more pleasant to shoot. Unsurpressed it is worse than my FAL or my no long gone HK91. Like both though.
I’m amazed that in the 21st century, ANY auto-loading rifle would have a reciprocating charging handle. Also, right handed charging handle for a right handed shooter! Makes SO much more sense to have it on the left!
The reciprocating charging handle WAS REQUIRED by SOCOM to act as a forward assist in case of a FTF. You have a bitch about the RCH, talk to SOCOM. Oh yeah, doesn't the AK, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine & M14 all have reciprocating charging handles? I thought so. You gamers can ALWAYS fuck up a good thing!!!
@@markwoodward3758 calm down flower pot! You’ll have an aneurism! Yeah, those guns do but I specifically said 21st century and those rifles were from the 20th. Do you see how that works? Plus, I’m not a gamer, so that’s another fail on your part. Do you know what else acts as a good forward assist? A forward assist…
I not only appreciate your videos generally. I specifically like, as in this video, when you go the extra "honest" step to say what I'm interested in. When a review is good I tend to be interested in all the good points of the gun and kinda want to buy it. But, you let me know, an AR is a better choice. Thank you. There is a lot of hype around the SCAR, but what I really need to know if I need to replace my AR. At some point technology will probably catch up to the AR platform. Maybe it has with the military's adoption of a new platform, I don't know. Just let us know when it does. Thanks again.
AR platform to my understanding is a well built, proven system, with the SCAR, its more like the new fancy stuff, selling technique for a hyped up price, if you take down a SCAR, you find a big chunk of a BCG, long and heavy, so when you fire a shot, imagine, this whole chunk of metal going back and forth. so there is no way you can keep it on target in a rapid fire or auto. Secondly, the whole frame is big and chunky. trigger is heavy. So what's the point of buying an already expensive gun and then go about changing everything in it.
100% agree with your thoughts on the needed upgrades for the scar. I've got the kdg rail and once you install it's like why isn't fn doing this? Also, want to upgrade the stock, but heard bad things about putting any of the aluminum adapter options as apparently it can fuck up the bcg over time 🤷♂️
I'd like to hear your comparison of the Scar and CZ Bren2. You also really liked the Bren2 in your previous review. I know your Bren2 was a 5.56, but I have read the two guns have similar piston setup.
Mk16 wasn't a "flop" it was just crazy expensive and didn't do anything the M4/Mk18 wouldn't already do already but without the silly charging handle trying to spank my thumb for the first 3 months.
went m1a socom, to Scar 17 to custom SLR AR10 to LMT mws, and I like them in that order I sold my Scar and CZ bren 2 for the same reasons, several thousand dollar half plastic guns 🤷🏻♂️
To clarify, it was government funding that prevented the SCAR 16 from replacing the M4. Not that the gun itself was a "flop." It was better in just about every category than the M4 with way less failure rates. Granted a few years later the SOPMOD upgrade to the M4 helped, the SCAR 16 was a success in every regard. The SCAR 17 even more so. To add a little more context, one of the biggest complaints from users of the SCAR platform was the reciprocating charging handle. But this wasn't the fault of FN, it was a SOCOM requirement for the SCAR program.
It’s just a matter of time before your rear screws start to cant and bend due to the metal buffer plate / AR stock attachment that you replaced the stock plastic one with. The big heavy bolt going to the rear and hitting this new metal buffer plate causes this. Good luck !!!
while they were at it, they should have added an Ambi bolt release, not a lefty but Ambi bolt releases are awesome like on the hk416a5, but I guess I'll have to wait another 20 years for that... huge fan of the scar 17 but in the modern firearms world the ergonomics are very 2000's and the lack of innovation from FN as well as modularity and the excessive price is killing the scar 17, I'm hoping once the patent runs out other companies will save it and give it a much better aftermarket as opposed to now.
I don't know if you can get one since you may need to order it, but I would love to see a review on the Robinson Armament XCR (L or M). I think the L in 5.56 makes the most sense, but it's up to you.
Pretty unrelated but have you heard or shot anything from Black Rain Ordnance? I would love to see you try out their affordable Spec 15 AR as well as maybe one of their higher-end AR's. If you have tried them out, how do you feel about them?
How do you like that PA red dot? I am running it on my AR15 and I like it but the dot isn't crisp at any illumination brightness. I don't have an astigmatism either.
I always wanted a scar H but the price tag is a little too hefty for most working men…. I’m entertaining the Idea of the new gen2 galil ace in .308 tho to compliment my AR10 battle rifle 😍!!
For that price point and style of rifle, I feel like there’s 3 other options that equal or best the SCAR platform. Even with the new NRCH update (took FN long enough). 1. B&T APC-223 (5.56 or .300 blkout) & B&T APC-308. These also have “Pro” models that were released a couple months ago, which have NRCH and several other upgrades the SCAR does not have. Oh…..AND they’re SWISS MADE! 2. Robinson Armament XCR-L and XCR-M. Was supposed to be the SCAR! Was disqualified from the “SCAR Trials”, due to the lack of blank firing adapters (total B.S.). Always had a NRCH. Not to mention, Robinson Armament has more options, configurations, and caliber choices from stock, than any other company on the market!! Oh…..AND it’s an AMERICAN made product + company. 3. CZ Bren 2, Bren 2Ms, and Bren 2 BR. As long as you stay away from the 7.62x39 variants of the Bren 2Ms you’ll be perfectly fine. It’s the “Czech SCAR” that showed the FN SCAR, how to be a SCAR lol.
@@J3o3 A lot of operators and infantrymen hated the SCAR. Hence why most never ended up using them. They also had a lot of issues early on. And actually, 2 of the 3 rifles I listed are used in other militaries and police forces so…..
Change that over gassed jet, factory. 50 to .30. KINETIC frond extension with M-Lock & KINETIC rear stock to eliminate that damn wiggle it has. Why do we get a 3 garand rifle with a A-2 grip!? I still have mine & carry it everyday on my Ranch. You may laugh, but it stopped the bear that charged me. It's a keeper for sure.
The scar is cool don’t get me wrong but what can a scar do that a ar15 can’t? Answer: nothing. Scars are cool I like them too, but the ar15 is a better platform and it doesn’t come with the stupid price tag.
Please review a Robison Arms XCR (either L or M) in the future, it would be a cool comparison against the SCAR (16/17) due to its similar features and value proposition....very few people have done this comparison so it would make for good content. Keep up the good work 👍
I want a scar so bad but im not willing to give a kidney and a arm for one. Fired one at my local range and fell in love. If i ever hit the lotto im getting one as long as we’re still able to get them.
Just got rid of my SCAR 16 a couples months ago, been regretting it ever since - but i simply have too many guns and i was in some real hot water financially speaking so i really didn't have a choice but to sell some of my babies. Luckily im one of those assholes who despite being permanently broke, i still have an armory worth of firearms that i can turn to if im in desperate need of some cash. Of course, wasting money on ridiculously over-priced guns is part of the reason im perpetually broke in the first place lol, but whatever. I know alot of people hated the SCAR16 and while it had it's flaws, (like it being over-priced for starters), it still was a great rifle. Still like a number of guns more, it's still an awesome firearm and really wish i didn't have to get rid of it, not to mention the fact that i had to lower the price considerably in order for someone to take it off my hands which left an even more bitter taste in my mouth than having to sell it in the first place already had done
I’ve been looking at the primary arms scope to put on my 17 also.. I have a 3.5 led acog right now… wonder if it’s worth it to sell the acog and get the new PA scope.
Let's be honest, FN has the crappiest customer service there is... but they also make se of the best guns you can find. I shoot mine suppressed and couldn't careless.
@@creekochee3592 I use the adjustable gas that comes with it. I personally am rocking a Thompson Machine suppressor because I like the fact that I can service it 100% myself. It may not be as quiet as some but it suppresses flash nicely and helps mitigate recoil more than most comps and breaks.
