true...At University ALL my teachers were"abstracT" artists..... none of them were realist at all, and back then youtube wasnt around.... that said, they were good at what they did, I basicly had to teach myself though.

Thanks for the video Jeff. I've watched the majority of the rest of your content on your channel and I have to say I'm very impressed. As someone who attended art school for years and spent lots of money and didn't really come out of there that developed (part of that was on me), I feel I've learned more listening to you than I did various instructors. I really feel like I connect to what you're saying. I want to enroll in your online school as soon as the chance presents itself. In the meantime I'll keep listening to what you have to say while I try my best to improve my skills on my own. I could listen to you all day.

Love your rants that emphasis everyone's potentiality and how art and everything else in life requires work and practice above all. It's really inspiring, especially to any young person, like myself, who is interested in art.

Jeff this is an absolute master class in the philosophy of inking and art , thank you so much for making this available , and not an ad break to be seen , easily the best video I've seen so far about inking , again thank you so much and damn , gosh you are incredibly interesting and talented , yet like the two great chicks from my own old school days , once gave me a purple paper wrapped present , when I once got out of hospital , with stars and luv hearts and written in fancy glitter pen on the wrapping , the words , " To Terry , the light of our lives , the sparkle in our eyes , and the other lump in the bed , luv Marqui and Lisa " and inside was a small wooden plaque with the words , " Everything gets easier with practice , except getting out of bed in the morning " all the greats reiterate that same thing you do , training , training , training , discipline , technique , hard work , the countless hours is what truly makes the difference . Raw talent only truly makes a difference for beginners in the early stages , studied at the level of masters , talent has practically no difference to why they are truly great , compared to the countless hours that go into the path of the master , yet by Fu*k your talented Jeff , my five cents worth says your a frickin virtuoso mate , but yes your , your own best critic , like any true master . 💎💎💎🎨🎨🎨💯💯💯

For the person who asked how to draw from the imagination? I just watched a recent Paul McCartney interview and somebody asked him how to get good and fluent at writing songs? Paul said about 3 times in a row, "Do it often." Elsewhere, some guy studying what creates "success?", came up with the theory that the greats put in 10,000 hours to become "beyond normal" as an artist.

I have recently figured out that i don't practices correctly. I am willing to put in the time in and I know I need to learn and relearn my craft but I could really use some help getting myself to start studying and practicing correctly. I have not had the gift of good teachers over the years. But I really want to push through this and better myself and learn how to learn all over again.

WOW...I never knew Jeff came from a SEQUENTIAL-WORLD and BACKGROUND!!! I love Frazetta, and grew up on his work. I am a portrait artist but started out doing comic characters. I love and collect as many of the old Warren magazines as I can. Creepy, Errie, and Vampirella are my favorites! There were so many great artists who inked their work in very classical styles and these people are who I gain so much knowledge from. The standouts for me were Ramon Torrants, Esteban Moroto, and Jose Gonzalez! But of course, there were so many more who were acclaimed in their own right.

I loved this video and it's so generous of you to upload 2:45 hours of content for the world to watch. The one thing that irked me was what you said at the 27:00 mark. You compared Frank Frazetta finessed ink renderings to that of Mike Mignola's or Frank Miller's style and concluded that their visual style is "dumbed down" so that they can execute their work faster. The subtext is that more finessed work is better art and that a simpler 'looking' work is lesser. That isn't the case. Mignola was notorious for taking a long time to create his Hellboy works because that's just how hard it is to create his highly designed art. The same goes for Frank Miller's highly composed black and white work. Don't be fooled by their simplicity and lack of rendering because they've influenced countless artists and films that went after them with their exquisite visual language. Frazetta, Miller and Mignola are the greats. But those who view these videos should heed that just because it takes longer to execute something doesn't mean that it deepens the art. Design and Simplicity is hard.

N Dizon Exactly! Mignola and Miller are geniuses just like Frazetta.
@davidfineart500
@davidfineart500 9 лет назад
N Dizon I think you misunderstood completely Jeff. What he says is that they dumbed down they art level since they needed to go faster, which is completely natural if I'm doing a 10sec sketch of course the art I'm doing will be "less complex" than if I did a 1min sketch or if I did a 10min sketch because you don't have time so you need to have a more simplify version in 10sec than in 10min.
@VanDavis
@VanDavis 6 лет назад
David R it's not misunderstanding, but perhaps a bad choice of words on the artist's part. Clarification of image and working on economy of line is not the same as "dumbing down."
@rjeffrey743

@@31leoceara Mignola and Miller are great but "genius?" Frazetta could fit into a room of Renaissance master draughtsmen. He's on his own tier.

Cool! A little advice: at 21 mins in you talk about bent brush tips. You can dip the tip in boiled water(don’t let it touch the glue) and after 30 seconds the hairs will straighten out. Not super healthy for your brushes, but very effective.

I don't fully agree that "anything you can do with a dip pen you can do with a brush." A dip pen is best suited for drawing in lines, whereas a brush is best suited for wash drawings or black and white ink drawings. Of course you can modify a brush in such a way to make it more suitable for line drawing. But in general with a dip pen, you can change the thickness at will with much more control over lines of differing lengths and curvatures, you can also create lines of almost unvarying thickness.

How good at drawing should I be before I get into inking?
@gongorelocksmagiincommand
@gongorelocksmagiincommand 4 года назад
Josh Alvarado for me personally I’ve been inking just as long as I’ve been drawing. Of course in the last couple years I’ve upgraded to big boy brushes and ink but it’s a medium I’ve been in love with for as long as I could remember. In my opinion, start inking now! Inking as a medium is quite difficult to master. But, the dexterity and skillful hand you’ll gain will prove very very useful -along with several other skills. I am no means a master but it’s something I will pursue til I die. Long story short - yes, at whatever level you are, I’d recommend you do it. Inking, among other mediums, will be another visual language you speak in your artistic journey/career. Hope you see this and hope this helped :)

you are a phenomenal artist, i admire both you and erik gist, yours job is fabulose. brush I don't understand if it's size 00, or size 2 in general i am not sure if it is about size 0, or size 1, 000 or 3 also I do not know if there are brushes that can also be good for ink, which ones to look for if they exist between 5 and 10 euros, and how long a brush can last. I ask anyone who can answer me, used only pens and nibs, even of these I really don't know anything and unfortunately out of budget for art and a little bit of everything. wuesti i think i am widson that in my country on national amazon i find them from 20 to 30 euros each. I don't know the right size, of the 2 or 3 that could be used or if one is enough, but the prices have been these for a year, before much much less I'm reading. we are talking about professional brushes so right that they cost but precisely for this and for the increase even if I would like to try them for a long time I have not taken them and now they cost more and I am worse and I respect myself even less. I am grateful to anyone who answers, I ask in general, even if you recommend something in particular, I like art and drawing but I don't make good drawings but among those who look at the drawing there are real and talented artists.

I use anything and everything to make pictures.. Cheap biro, pencils, gouache paint, sakura pigma micron pens (I love these and you can get a pack of multiple sizes for less than £10). Don't get too caught up in materials unless you REALLY wanna try something. I really want to try oil painting one day but am waiting until I improve my draftsmanship first before I get involved with the complications of oil (space and mess). Gouache is a simple and easy clean alternative for now 🌞

I think that hand rendered ink and paint on paper will continue. As a professional cartoonist and painter,I not only refuse to submit to a world where everything may be denied us because tech has an off switch,but also because there is a palpable difference in physical existing art vs the over polished,anticeptic quality that is born out of the "app look". Remember,photography was supposed to be the death of painting. That presumption ended very quickly. I only produce work that exists as I exist,occupying space in the world. True art is an entity. Comics already have be a the slander of a disposable,trash quality. Will we now allow the facilitation of electronic convenience to render them pellucid ghosts as well? Not my work. Not great work. The sound of the pencil scratching at the Bristol is a song of life. You are an excellent artist and a fine teacher.
