Mate hats off to your patience. Nothing ever just goes together and works perfectly first time out. Stick with it, as always enjoyable to watch.

As with every video of late. It is slow progress, but we are getting closer and closer.

AAAAARRRRGGGHHH! Cracked windscreen I admire your persistence in doing everything Jeff, hope you can get another okay. Old cars always have poor earths and low power to lights and horns etc. The new fuse panel with relays is great. I personally put relays to everything and new earths as well. If you would like to update the horn you can get super compact air horns that are about the same weight as your standard horn nowadays. Stebel Nautilus Compact although there are plenty of cheap ripoffs too that are very good as well. Thanks for the video

I definitely think new earths are needed for the tail lights. I will have to look into it more.

Rob Armstrong Out here in Australia down under country we call a ground "Earth" I don't know why......maybe an English way of saying it whilst "Ground" is American?

Jeff, I feel your pain. I had the exact same thing happen to me when my wife and I were trying to install the windshield into a 1966 Chevy van project I had a few years ago. Gives you a sick feeling in your stomach 😳 when the crack happens. I tell everyone I just assumed my wife was an expert windshield installer 😂

generally the chrome trim in the windshield rubber is used as a "lock". Put it on AFTER you install the windshield.

Thanks Nick. I am not broken yet, it just makes me more stubborn :D Much respect for helping out H&F as well ;)

Jeff and the Mrs, fine work you're doing, on the windshield, start at the bottom and it's imperative that the lower portion of the glass and seal are in their proper position, there wont be enough room at the top if it doesn't fall into place, a common problem is a portion of the seal will be hung on the lip, you wont see it because of the dash pad, also the glass has to drop all the way down the seal channel, lots of glass cleaner help make things slick, you can use a slapping motion on the glass to force into a low position, makes sense why they went to a glued in windshield....good luck
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 7 лет назад
We started at the bottom this time and it was sealed in very nicely around the bottom and the sides. The top corners went in fine, but the windscreen was still sitting a little low, so the rubber was only on the very edge of the lip. I probably should have pulled it out and tried again. Anyway, now I have to buy a new one, so I will get them to put it in.

Said it on the other vid but you're fitting it wrong. With the trim fitted the rubber extrusion has no flex in it specifically to retain the screen. If it went in like that, then there's a chance it could come out, hence it don't go in.

Yay! Jeff is back!!! It's coming together beautifully! Too bad for the windscreen, but you'll get it sorted, we have faith in you :) PS. Don't you fear the cats scratching your paintjob???

I still have to cut back and buff the whole car, so I am not too precious with it at the moment.

isn't the chrome trim in the rubber meant to go in last that's how mini's fit
@Malcarper

Was good you did not try to blame Mrs Jeff, for the windscreen cracking, as you clearly broke it. Perhaps it's one job, best left to a professional mobile screen fitter. If they break the next screen fitting it, then they should supply another one for free. Are you sure the body shell that surrounds the screen is not distorted, due to any past accident damage or repairs? With the screen and rubber seal removed, try taking 2 diagonal measurements and see if they are exactly the same.

I think it should be good. We basically had it in when I cracked it, (and that windscreen came out of it).

Jeff I've learned a lot watching this build. Mostly I've determined I'm not the restoration type, when I'm ready I think I'll just go buy a used Boxster. :p

Haha, I sometimes wish I was the same. I have 2 more rust buckets in the wings waiting their turn. I wish I had bought at least one of them running, so I have one to drive.

Ahhh, the old windshield was probably finely pitted anyway. The new one will be perfect! As for the horns, it sounds like you still have the low tone one. My low tone one has stopped working, and people laugh when I try to honk them out of the way with just a high squeaky tone. It is driving season here in Canada, so it may have to wait for a rainy weekend to get buttoned up.
@HomeBuiltByJeff

Ahhh, that is why there are two horns.

Almost in, but not quite. Then it's broken and Mrs. Jeff is disappointed. :P Did I not advise you to have it done professionally? I'm sure I remember commenting about it. Because, even if you fit it successfully, it's going to leak, sadly. At least when it leaks after a professional does it, they're gonna fix it for free. The OEM 911 horn is hellishly loud, and worth having, I think. One of mine had an Italian horn on it when I got it - a lousy, wheezy little thing. Just about the first thing I did to it was stick the right horn in it.
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 7 лет назад
I might look at the other horn and see if I can get it working as well. It won't take much to fit it. As for the windscreen, now I need a new one anyway, I will get them to fit it for me, like you say, it is up to them to get it right.

Good watching your progress, as I am in the middle of complete rebuild of a 76 911 Targa S. Your windscreen would be easier to fit with the chrome strip removed, and inserted after the screen is in place. Use WD40 to fit the Chrome strip at the end.

You guys look good together! Sucks about the windshield but it can be replaced and you learned a lesson " less hammer and more soppy water". Horns, there are two used a high and low tones for all models and the ones you have were less expensive than the Porsche ones. Retro fuse panel looks great, I plan on fitting the same type in my car one day. Since your car was converted it's really no telling what worked and what didn't before so one system at a time. Both the combo turn signal and high/low headlight switch and the highlight switch control so much look there for a lot of lighting issues as well as the grounds after the new paint. Bentley manual is very helpful also look to the pelican parts and impact bumper web sites because someone else has had the same elec. problem. I have spent countless hours on the electrical systems only to fix one issue and cause another. Enjoy!
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 7 лет назад
That is why electrical systems have always driven me crazy. With one of the tail lights, when I connected the earth clip to the body and touched the brown ground wire for the light came on, so there is obviously something going haywire in the circuit.
@soranrix

in a never volkswagen the reason for 2 horns are it´s a highline, not a standert low ekstras car, i think you should check the back plates(the one that hold the bulbs) regarding the ground fault on the rear lights they offen fail in vw, and your´s is an older car, like the new fuse box as always keep up the good work mate
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 7 лет назад
Thanks mate. The ground fault is actually coming from the brown wire in the harness, so I will have to trace it back further.

ahh okey funny it´s both sides?? there must be a connection for both rear light´s some were, that would be my next place to look

really impressive build so far, but as others have said, you have to take the chrome trim out of the rubber before you try and fit the glass, theres no way its going in with that fitted, it acts as a wedge in the rubber to hold the screen tight after youve put it in!
@HomeBuiltByJeff
@HomeBuiltByJeff 7 лет назад
Actually that is what I thought, but from the others I have researched all install it with it in, and have no issues. My main issue was that the window was not centred properly.

Well, that'll do it too! I hate doing glass. Love your channel, inspirational work on the shell, especially the attention to the panel gaps - truly impressive.

Why do you install the lock list before the windscreen is mounted? worked in the late 80s in a car production plant and that was how it as done, 'cos it vas a list that locked the installation. Just wondering, might be something else on your car.
