This is one of the most startling videos on knees that I have seen. I find it amazing that it has taken this long for the medical profession to work out that peoples legs and the weight bearing elements are different. Thank you very much for raising this point, it is vital for everyone likely to have surgery to understand. I am going to put off any knee replacement as long as possible until the process becomes more mainstream/available. Well done Prof B for raising this issue.

How do they know what your leg alignment was originally? My wife is considering knee replacement and she is quite bow legged, but she wasn’t before. She has lost so much cartilage that she is bone on bone and her legs have bowed outwards.

I am bowlegged, and with 10 years of bone on bone, I basically had no ACL. My husband didn’t like walking behind me because of how my knees looked as I wobbled with each step. I had a total knee replacement 7 weeks ago. My doctor did the Kinematic correction and uses Mako robotics. They took a CT of my knee, and also an X-ray from hip to ankle. I am very pleased with the results. I had told him at the onset I didn’t want a totally straight leg as I have been bow legged my whole life(65 yrs).

Excellent information. What is the change in procedure required for kinematic vs mechanical knee replacement?

Thank you Dr Bellemans for this informative video, I am a Polio patient, I underwent what a TKR, which I think was a mechanical procedure in London UK in 2019, unfortunately my situation is now worse than pre Op and now totally rely on using two walking crutches to aid me in walking partially due to muscle wasting but my right leg is more Vulgus now. My Question is, Would Kinematic knee replacement help me in any way ?? Thank You.

Very informative, thank you. Couple of questions occurred to me. Would Kinematic knee replacement be computer assisted surgery ? Secondly how is the original state of the knee i.e. valgus or varus alignment determined ?

So, based on what is said in this video, the devarizing osteotomy is no longer advisable ?

So how are you approaching it in your surgery? Still doing mechanical or you doing kinematics?

I have query regarding the knee..............does the knee weaken if you run downhill and uphill ?

it seems like the mechanical replacement would put undo stress on the hip joint if the patient was anything other than straight lined.....so it just leads to a new problem down the road if you change the angles of the alignment that the patient was used to for their whole life...i really haven't seen any of my friends who have had total knee replacement return to full on running after they had TKR....makes me wonder if it alleviated the knee pain put puts stress on other parts of the body and causes them to walk/run more cautiously because of the different discomfort/pain and alignment...I want you to do my knee if it needs it in 5yrs from now

@@lisatalley296I’m staring at TKR this October. I’m a mechanical Engineer. This seems to light up possibilities in options. I’m in the US.. I’m with a highly respected and experienced and successful group. But I do not know if or suspect they aren’t doing this type of investigation into the replacement match .. it seems most important to me.. how do I get more info and what’s the best way to question my surgeon on this?
