My motto is, "I build kit guitars because it satisfies my three passions: music, woodworking, and not getting divorced for buying $3,000 Gibsons." This kit was provided by viewer off my Amazon project list (www.amazon.ca/..., and was actually a lot of fun to build.
I love the way the Tung oil finish turned out, and the fact that I got to torch yet another guitar fills me with fiery happiness!! (BTW, the body wood is okoume...that's the word I forgot in the video.)
So...what do you think? Do you think the BexGears 8-string kit is worth investing in?
I do! BUT...it's not for beginners. There are some minor woodworking and wiring issues you need to be able to solve. Still, as a blank canvas it's a great option for future upgrades and nice for bragging rights just to say you have an 8-string!
(If you want ME to build you one, order it off my project list and leave your contact info to discuss finishing and upgrade options.)
You can get it here:

Upgrading to EMGs and some locking tuners would make this an amazing build

Thinking about new pickups at some point. Locking tuners are no advantage except in string changes.

looks awesome!! Did you have to reslot the nut for normal 8 string sets?
@woodsnstrings
@woodsnstrings Год назад
No I didn't adjust the nut at all actually.

Did you have any trouble grounding the bridge? Ours is buzzy.
@woodsnstrings
@woodsnstrings Год назад
Things can get a little weird in QC for some of these instruments. Initially I did get a LOT of buzz, and started by sanding the finish off the bottom of the bridge to get a better contact. But what solved it for me was on the inside. If you look at the solderless connections, see if it looks like the black wire from the pickups lines up with the black wire to the output. On mine, it lined up red wire to black wire, and that didn't make a lot of sense. So I clipped off the solderless clips and soldered black to black, red to red on all those connections (and taped them individually to avoid shorting, of course), and that did the trick. I've contacted the manufacturer about this but they haven't responded. Hopefully they're at least fixing it.

Now that’s what I’m talking about. 8 strings are way better for this guitar. Wish I’ll invert the 8 strings upside down and play with this guitar lol 👍🏽

Did you stain this at all? Or was it just the torch that got it to be that dark color? I just bought one of these and am trying to decide what to do for stain
@woodsnstrings
@woodsnstrings Год назад
Just the torch. But a couple coats of Danish oil to amber out the wood, then shined up with a bunch of coats of polymerizing Tung oil.

@@woodsnstrings sick, I might have a go at something similar to what you did then, thanks for the reply🤘🏻

How can you tell what wires are in the wrong place? I'm getting a brutal humming when I plug it in and can't figure out why
@woodsnstrings
@woodsnstrings Год назад
Take a look at the solderless connections. If it looks like the red wire from the pickup leads to the black wire from the controls, it's backwards. I just clipped the solderless clips off and soldered black to black, red to red. Problem solved.

I would be all over this if it weren't for the 25.5" scale length.
@woodsnstrings
@woodsnstrings Год назад
It does take a beefier bottom end to get enough tension on it. The posts on the tuners are all standard sizes though, so it's hard to even drill out the hole for the low F#. But yes, a fanned fret would be a more stable tuning choice -- that's a lot to ask of a kit.

Well I'd rather have a shredzilla in a 8 string but this is my first 8 string so I'm kinda thinking do it as cheap as possible

Good setup + good fretwork and any decently built guitar will do that. Maybe throw in some good pickups for taste

what's the scale length tho?
@woodsnstrings
@woodsnstrings Год назад
25.5 inches.
@sadpotato7029
@sadpotato7029 Год назад
@@woodsnstrings hmm isnt that a little short for an 8 string?
@MrJbangoy
@MrJbangoy Год назад
@@sadpotato7029 amazon has it listed as 26.5" which is still a bit short on the low end but no different from old Schecters prior to multiscale. They do Drop Eb with a .80 or .85 string without too much slop.
@sadpotato7029
@sadpotato7029 Год назад
@@MrJbangoy yeeaah guess i'll pass on that then. i bought the 7 string version few months ago but sadly it's just a 25.5 scale length but i got it tuned down to drop F with no problem. planning to replace just the stock bridge pickup with something higher gain like maybe a bareknuckle brute force 7 since the stock neck pickup from belcat sounded pretty ok and i dont even use it that much. bridge pickup on the other hand sounded weak
@MrJbangoy
@MrJbangoy Год назад
@@sadpotato7029 I have a baritone for that register, the 8 opens up some fun flexibility for stuff other than Metal. I have a duo with no bass so I beefed up the 3 bass strings and run them as Eb Ab Db and then treat the 6 string part like it's in Drop D and finger pick bass lines with chords up top to fill the sound. It was too much work transposing for the baritone
