I had the chance to test the brand new Harman Phoenix last week and the film turned out to be very good and much better than I anticipated. Still a lot to develop, but a massive step on potentially keeping colour film (C41) alive.

Thanks my friend. I liked all your shots, even the ones from the Oly point and shoot. Looks like an interesting film.

It is indeed!!! A lot of character and still a little misunderstood I'd say.

I've not finished my first roll yet, but from the images I've seen online, I agree with you on the colours. In the right conditions, the actual hues look great! As it is today, it certainly has a lot of character, but it doesn't look like a gimmicky film stock like the Lomo stocks tend to.

No, not at all!!! This are the real characteristics of the film which could change as they develop. But regardless of the flaws, it's still an incredible first try.

Nice one!! Like I said on the video, just pay attention on your scene and if you can, use a light meter!

Yes I did!! I normally do everything by myself at home, but I had to have them do it this time as they are promoting the photo walk on sat and they will be developing and scanning for all the participants.

the "so much grain" can be also influenced by developing? being a new film, maybe the formulas for machines are not quite right ? i saw different examples, most of them with the high grain but also with less, so it is a variation in developing scaning, but nobody until now did a round-up to see if we can have a pattern for good exposures/less grain@@WTFphotography

Development on C41 has very little to do with the amount of grain, in this case the film does have the characteristic of having quite large grain structure compared to other C41 films. With that said, the grain can be controlled by exposing the film correctly. You can see that from the studio shots. Light is controlled and grain is visible. But the grain is part of the personality of the film which we should embrace it or work around it, just like the Halation. In the other hand, you are right about the the scanning. Trying to recover detail from the shadows will boost the grain, and to be honest, that is what I think is the problem, I could see that when I was "editing" the pictures. Every picture that I was trying to pull detail from the shadows the grain would go over the top. Also the 35mm format tends to stress the grain structure, in any film, So I believe that a 120 version of Phoenix could deliver a much finer and more controlled grain, but the latitude of the film is the main problem here and try to recover details from both highlight and shadows will make it even worse.

i am really bothered by that amount of grain in a 200 film. yeah, we embrace it, we know that 'this is film' but it should be better. less grain, less halation, more stability, cheaper price. and from what videos i saw, they had the tehnology do do small batches of it to test different recipes. if this is the best that they could get.....i don't see them very well. @@WTFphotography

It's totally fine for you not to like the film and eventually decide that this isn't a film stock for you, no one is forced to like it, but have you shot with it yet? The film is far from perfect, and Harman/Ilford seems to understand that very, very clear, however, this is the first BRAND NEW FILM in decades. It's the very first 100% new emulsion made in decades. On the past years Fuji has stopped production, Kodak has inflate their film prices to obscene highs. Cinestill is witch hunting anyone with an "800T" and all we can afford at the moment seems to be weird Lomo films with funny colour and grains. Having Harman producing this film is a fresh wind of changes. Sure, they could have done things differently, but how better would that be? They decided to share the development of the film with us, film photographer community. That's why the Phoenix is a limited edition, that's why they are asking us to give feedback about the film and that is why it's isn't (and shouldn't be) cheaper. Paying 15, 16€ for a new film (limited edition) in development doesn't seem as bad as paying 20€ for a well know stock that have been around for ages like Portra 400. The thing about the Harman Phoenix isn't about what it is today, but what it can become tomorrow. @@estwern
