New Haven was once lined with Elm trees and was known, nationally, as Elm City. Left when I was 23. Am now 93. Then, it was a wonderful place to live. East Rock, West Rock, Yale, Savin rock, The Green, numerous factories, Yale, Peabody Museum, Lighthouse, etc. etc. etc. As a kid, I bicycled everywhere. It broke my heart when my neighborhood was demolished for the highway connector. I loved New Haven.
@Jaybird wtf ru talking about! U people! I still live in new haven and have been here my whole life. I can tell u one thing, not one group or race is responsible for ruining this city. Everyone has had a hand in it. Mostly the corrupt politicians and Yale buying up everything and forcing lower and middle class to live in the same area with no resources. So know wth ur talking about before u open up ur ignorant mouth. FYI I'm Italian American.
I lived in New Haven when I was younger, and worked there for over 35 years. Sure glad I'm not there anymore. Leaving Connecticut altogether soon since the entire state sucks. Tax climate, political climate, and well, climate are all driving us south. What gets us by here will go much farther when we move. We're not alone either. Wagons ho!
Yeah, them southern states are great. Especially the deep ones. Costs of living are higher in first world states... ...but the south don't pay as well as Yankeyville. So...
Lived in new haven public housing for six years it was the safest city I ever lived in. I was a single white female. Walked the streets at all hours of the day and night alone, never a problem. I miss New Haven. 😔
FUCK NEW HAVEN POLICE THO: THEY gave me problems. Not the “gangs” not the homeless, the fucken PIG POLICE in New Haven gave me problems, violated my rights numerous times too.
Aquil Salaam Think what you want, New Haven Police are considered one of the best Police Forces in the country! If they targeted you... There must have been good reason!
It is true that New Haven is riddled with problems and great poverty. State help such as Medicaid is attributed suspiciously and often denied incomprehensibly. The social services are completely overwhelmed because of the immensity of need. New Haven is also hard, cold, and too often ugly. But in this seriously difficult environment, many amazing and wonderful people also live, for absolutely real
The video didnt look like Las Vegas to me. Does it look like a place you would like to live? Life is rough in New Haven. If you life is not rough, you do not live in New Haven. You might go to school there.
Born and raised in the New Haven area and lived in the city for many years. I was ready to leave when it was time but it's a city that gave me so much! People say it's dangerous but I almost never had any issues. So much history, beautiful architecture, and it has that New England charm. Yes it can get rough and you need to be smart, but it's a city to be proud of.
A A Q Boi if u know so much about The 'Hood' describe it! Btw Fair Haven has had the most crimes throughout all the havens in Connecticut New Haven, West Haven, East Haven and North Haven! And if u think it clean come out here and look for urself and while ur here's try not to get gunned down
Sombra Chan - I had the misfortune of living in East Oakland when I was a child. I lived in other parts, including Piedmont, which wasn't much better. That was back before it became the war zone it is today. Compare this video, and the ones of Oakland, to Detroit and Camden. They all rank among the most dangerous cities in the US, but this video and Oakland are not as dilapidated. BTW, I'm a woman.
Yes , this is what a hood looks like in New Haven and the projects look like condos. Most of the people in New Haven are working people and students, and pretty much the only people getting shot are the people that are out doing dirt themselves. Don't get me wrong, it can be off the hook sometimes but its not a dirty ass town full of broke thirsty people. Just a bunch of bad ass kids that don't give a eff. that are mostly the problem.
Adam Loxsom Lived on Arch St. As a kid growing up in New Haven, I remember nothing but good times! Congress Ave. was our hangout St. We stayed out Summer nights till past midnight singing as a group of black and white kids who loved each other! We had street corner singing groups! My good friend Jay Logan ( who was black) sang lead! There were as many as 10-15 kids hanging out, having fun! Never got into trouble! Things changed in the early sixties when poor blacks from the South moved into the neighborhood! They were very anti white and convinced the black kids I grew up with, that we were their enemies! It was never the same from then on in! The city became a place where crime was rampant! There were riots in the late 60's burning down houses and businesses, until there wasn't even a store left to buy food! My family moved to Ansonia, Ct., near the Woodbridge town line! That was in 1962! Now... Today... New Haven is coming back!! The slums were knocked down throughout the worst parts in the " Hill" section, where I lived! New homes were built, and many White folks who fled the city in the 60's, were coming back " home"! Today New Haven is for the most part, safe, crime is way down! The population is growing and the Elm City ( as it is known) is back!
Joel I heard about you actually and I love the New Haven pride! That's amazing to hear it was a tad rougher for me coming up but everyone experiences things differnt. Thanks for sharing that though it was wonderful to hear
Adam Loxsom where did you live? Did we know each other? I just saw your reply to me about my experiences in New Haven! When I got married, I moved to Wallingford.. Where I live today! My late wife ( who passed away 5 years ago) was a New Haven girl! Lived on Dorman St.! In Newhallville!
Starting at 5:29 it looks like a mixture of new haven & new Rochelle! I've been to new Rochelle & mount Vernon several times before!! ~Bridgeport CT reppin' 💯🌆💙👀~
New Haven didn't look like a hood to me. When I first flew out there people kept saying it's dangerous. I thought this is a hood, looks better than South Central or Watts.
elton wilson thats a straight lie google it yall only beat Hartford one Year and thats when yall had 34 and Hartford had 28 that year Hartford has the highest murder rate in CT New haven has the highest crime Rate in CT and thats because all of the crimw Reports from Yale that boost ur crime average if Hartford or Bridgeport had big colleges within the city limits they would be 2 times more worst with crime !!! NEW HAVEN NICE LOL
Savion Fairman i been in CT my whole 36 years im from HARTFORD i been to NEW HAVEN a billion times fuck u mean i go through any hood NEW HAVEN COLLEGE town now!!!
check fbi statistics every year we more dangerous way more ppl get shot stab and rob here even if they dont die thats a fact.double the ppl get shot here than bpt and about 20 more assaults and ppl shot than hartford
+James Crooms you are a fool. new haven is usually the murder capital of Ct every year. 2011 there were 70 murders. check it out for yourself. #4 in the country cause its a small city of 150k people. Hartford is booming this year. with your 14murders since 2018 began
I just bought a CO-OP on York street, beautiful area and walking distance to EVERYTHING including the theatre! I LOVE it, reminds me of Manhattan. They tell me that the tough area is around Elm And Kensington; haven’t walked there yet. Lots of people trash-talking this place without perspective! I’ll give you a dose of perspective: I was born and raised in Manhattan, the worse hood is above 125 Street, dangerous and dirty; currently this hood is commanding rents of $1,600 per month for a small 1 bedroom apartment- with NO amenities! My maintenance on York street is $670 a month, includes everything, has a balcony, swimming pool and and 24 hrs lobby security; walking distance to the Metro-north that shoots me to Grand Central in a bit over 1.5 hours!!!
New Haven is a great city. It ain't "Bad" at all. Yeah, it made some "Most Dangerous" lists but that's all due to property crimes. Property crimes aren't dangerous. The place averages around 20 homicides a year. Usually. They had only 7 in 2017. Yep, real dangerous.
Elton, that's my point. Millville, which is unknown to most, is worse than New Haven. Much worse. And yeah, man, in bad cities, a project right across from a transportation hub would be New Jack Fucking City... But not in New Haven...
America most likely suits the role of bandits, not only in the international arena, but also inside the country too, where, instead of a kind and human relationship, you meet hatred and contempt. But, on the other hand, watching this video, I was more loyal to America, if only because I would look at the way of life there, but you started writing about the gangs there.
ooo i dont really now i dont live there there my cousins do on the other side of the city where the yuppies wont dear to go i live in hartford u best believe i no all about gang riddled neighborhoods
All the One Way streets in this town drive me nuts! I try to avoid driving & walk whenever I can. This didn't look very bad, but it's still hard to believe this town is also home to Yale University.
New Haven is an old factory town that has now become both a college and corporate service town. These hoods dont look bad however at night it could be an entirely different story.
i used to live right across the street from where that guy leon got shot across the street. all of the neighborhood loved my family but as soon as leon got shot, we realized that i couldnt live there anymore because there would be street fights, drug dealers, and gang members everywhere.
charlie you ended up going threw the safest section of the city of new haven, if u went threw the vill. the tre'. the terrer dome the jungle just to name a few shit would had been off the wall
Everybody is talking like New Haven is some kind of shooting gallery. Yet the murder rate for New Haven in 2016 was 9.96 people murdered per 100,000 inhabitants. That's less than twice as high as the average for the whole country, which is 5.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. New Haven has a higher murder rate, sure, but being less than twice as high as the whole country is not exactly like being in a war zone.
In 2011 newhave had 40-50 muders making it the 4th most dangerous city in the us behind detroit stlouis and Flint. When shit pops and gangs are at war it get live man these last few years are the lowest homicide rate new Haven has seen in a literally 100 years
SouthjettyBill u never been to Hartford if u think Hartford is not Ghetto now i was with u with NEW Haven because i think its clean Compared to Hartford but shit do go down in New Haven but for u to think Hartford ia boring u dumb as fuck google my city shit goes down on the Regular Hartford is the murder Capital of New England !!
Ok, Hartford has some grimy hoods, but the video on here was boring. I haven't been in Hartford since the late 90's. You guys in Hartford cooler than Bridgeport? Ok here's my thing with Connecticut. I ride public transportation along the 95 corridor in Connecticut. The Metro North and more local lines. There's never any characters on these lines. There's no suburban drug traffic heading in and out of the cities. If one rides public transportation in New Jersey...get ready for a show. Half of the people are coming and going from copping in Camden, Philly, Newark etc. All the transit areas are all wacky. It ain't like that in Connecticut. And I still say New Haven is nice as hell.
I grew up in the Front St. Projects on Peck St. 1968-69 Was still rough back then..😅 But it got Bad in the 80s. Now its those grey townhouses in the beginning. Lived on Edgewood in 70 started school at Dwight. Crazy.
I lived on CLINTON AVE, FOR MANY YEARS TILL I MOVED OUT BACK IN THE 83 AFTER THAT IT WENT DOWN DOWN HILL BUT I LOVE " GRAND AVE PIZZA " & Rocco's pastry ! Miss my true FRIENDS THERE LOVE YOU GUYS !
the Hill section is where he driving through... much love charlie313. but when you coming to Boston.. Dorchester, Roxbury and mattapan sections... Bluehill ave.. etc.
I see he driving through the hood- but he missed going all the way down Dixwell & Whallry. However, Boston is where I'm from. So you forgot to add South End fam!
New Haven has the best pizza in the state of CT. Modern, Pepes, Bar, Pizza house. If you want sea food you have to go Damatos. Come eat in New Haven. Its not that bad. Bridgeport is worst then New Haven, and so is Hartford.
Yea Hartford is worse now because New Haven is not as bad as it was 20 or 30 yrs ago its calmed down alot but shit still goes down way more ppl get robbed and shot in New Haven than anywhere else in CT
me me Watch till the end, moron, it’s New Rochelle New York. Watch the last two minutes of the video you’ll see. I’m from New Haven as well, and I know it’s not New Haven!
Anthony Ellison I was born there! Moved to Kensington when I was 6! Used to walk down Frank to Truman School! Also walked to Troop and Hillhouse! Great memories!
@z man I used to live on sylvan ave and Howard ave but let me tell ya back in 2010 and 2012 3 shots per day always someone gettin shot, but I think we finally woke up and started lovin eachother.
Noticed he drove through K Ave (Kimberly Ave). Call it the good but it’s not that horrible of a place. My cousins were raised there and I used to visit over there pretty often.
YOU HAVE TO COME TO THE BIGGEST CITY IN THE US...THAT WOULD MOST LIKELY BE NYC...8.5 MILLION PEOPLE...THE FIRST STOP COULD BE MY HOOD...THE SOUTH BRONX...THEN STEP OFF TO BROOKLYN ...QUEENS ...HARLEM AND STATEN ISLAND...BUT NO CITY IN THE WORLD CAN TOP CHICAGO HOODS
Lived in Paterson NJ and New Haven CT(the ville) half my life, New Haven is easy style and not that bad. Paterson is where I had the most problems and issues at. New Haven is 20x safer than Paterson🙏🏽
I am descended from the Brockett who drew up the blue print and property map of, New Haven, CT. He was among the first settlers there. Such a shame it has gone to hell!
