Thanks for all of the great videos. I have been watching all of them. I will be swapping out my home AC and Heating units this next spring. The AC is from 1968, sears (still works great), and furnace is not much newer. The evaporator coil is in a huge box above the furnace that also deals out all of the out going ductwork. Would you just replace the evaporator coil and not the box or take down the whole thing and rebuild it all? I am looking forward to the patreon membership a month or two before I start the project. I will be switching out my home heating/ac next spring. I have an old system, the ac is 1968 sears unit and furnace is probably a little newer but not much. The evaporator coil is in a huge box above the furnace that handles all of the outgoing ductwork. How do you handle a situation like that? Just change out the evaporator coil itself and not the box? I will definitely be signing up for the patreon a month or so before I make the purchase and start planning it out. Thanks for all of the great detailed videos.

Filter Drier not as necessary on a New System, although it would be safer for the evaporator coil in case of rust inhibitor breaking off of the compressor as what took place with a lot of Copland Compressors about 10 years ago. Also solder could affect the refrigerant circuit.

I always thought it was critical to isolate below 500 microns and monitor 10 or 15 mins of decay to make sure it does not rise too much. Do you not need this in any situation? I would have done a piston if it was up to me, but I quoted this customer a 16seer system, and the txv is needed to achieve 16 seer. Why did you fold down the flanges on top of the furnace? Aren't they there to keep the matching coil case secured to the top of the furnace? I'm pretty sure when I did my Goodman 4 years ago that's how it went together and I definitely know I didn't fold anything down like that. Also, here's a tip. Start your screws on the bulb strap from the top next time. That will make it much easier to tighten. But actually, do not connect your steel TXV bulb to the aluminum on the evaporator coil. These are 2 very dissimilar metals and create galvanic corrosion between them. The TXV instructions show to connect it to copper either inside the coil casing or outside the coil casing, but you must connect to copper, not aluminum. Over time there's a good chance corrosion will develop on the aluminum coil due to steel on aluminum and a leak will occur. Steel to copper is way more compatible and should last the life of the unit.

What's the theory of running nitrogen while braizing? I did residential appliance system work with just acetylene for 40 years so watching was a "what the heck ? " moment. All of those fittings on the evap. looks like potential leak sources. My 18 year old Rheem coil had nothing like that when I installed it. Nothing external on mine but refrigerant lines. Thanks for video.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Год назад
Yea they wanted a higher efficiency system. I prefer the standard piston metering device instead of the txv that you saw on the Evap coil. The theory on the nitrogen is that if you braze without a nitrogen flow, it will creat soot inside the lines that will mix with the refrigerant. Supposedly it wasn’t a big deal with r22 but it is with 410a. That’s what they say. I have another video on Staybrite 8. An awesome alternative to brazing and no nitrogen flow is needed because soldering takes way less heat then brazing. Check it out! Cheers

Quick questions.... In a central AC unit, I know you can braze, but I'm drawn to the pro-fit connectors even though they are pricey as a one off since they seem to be idiot proof. I've also seen compression fittings used....but the tool seems to run at least $1000. On mini-splits, flare fittings seem popular. Can you also do flare on conventional AC like Goodman? Also, soft solder...Staybrite 8 I think with minimal flux. Any thoughts. Brazing seems like it can be screwed up.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Год назад
With anything other then brazing you are taking a risk, many people won’t do anything but brazing but I’m open to other alternatives. The zoomlock and rls fittings do require a tool that’s more like 3k which isn’t an option for most DIYers. They do have the push to connect fittings similar to shark bite fittings, most don’t trust them but I’ll install them on the next install I do and document everything! Another gentleman said that he only uses solder and flux and it doesn’t need nitrogen since it’s much lower heat. I’m going to look into that also and maybe give that a try sometime! Anyways thanks for the questions, it gives me something to try on the next install and if there is success then I can recommend it to diyers like yourself. Thanks for the support! Cheers

You actually can solder them but you must use Stay Brite 8. I’m in the process of creating a video on how to solder linesets and will be posting that before this spring when a lot of brazing will be happening. The Staybrite 8 has been field tested and is actually stronger then brazing, but requires the use of flux which some people don’t like. Brazing melts the copper together actually fuzing them, whereas soldering fills the joints. Stay tuned for the Staybrite 8 video! @diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Год назад
Alot of new construction they will put the evap coil on top of the furnaces and run the lineset, so if in the future it is desired, it is less work. However, if it is an old furnace with the coil attached, more then likely it is designed for r22, you can read what refrigerent it takes on the stamp on the front of the coil. So if it says r22, you will have the replace it with a new one anyways. I just recently did this for a customer. System had a coil from 2008, never used. And lineset and electric for condenser, but nothing was finished, so I installed a new condenser and replaced the evap coil with a 410a coil, connected my lines and electrical and it was in business! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! Cheers

Can I please ask you another question? I have a Lenox system about 6 years old that is still under warranty. The system is not getting cold at all. At first, I thought it was low on freon but I didn’t see any ice buildup on the system. I called the CO and they inspected it. They told me that the system needs freon which is not under warranty and I have to pay out of my pocket. I plan to charge the freon tomorrow. I just wanted to run by you to see why this system is low on freon but there is no ice buildup?
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Год назад
A system that is low on Freon will freeze the evaporator coil because the pressure at the low side gauge correlates to a temperature, when it gets too low, that temperature readout gets below 30 deg and the ice will eventually just block the air handler from blowing any air at all. You must have SOME temperature drop from your return air to your supply vents if it’s low on Freon but not freezing. It doesn’t necessarily have to be freezing to be low. Your pressures on a hot day should be around 150-170 on the low side and 300-315 on the high side. If it’s not super hot those numbers will be a little lower. Hope this helps!
@trucle1859
@trucle1859 Год назад
@@diyhvacguy So when I charge the freon, how do you determine that's full? is it based on the pressure range above that you recommended or based on SH & SC number? I looked at the factory sign. it's only shown the freon weight (5lb 13 oz).
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Год назад
@@trucle1859 Does it have a txv? If so you would measure the subcooling. If it has a piston, measure the superheat. Typically you want about 10-12 degrees of superheat, and around and the same for subcooling. If there is no heat coming out of the condensing unit like above the fan when you get started, and after you pump it up to around 150 low, 300 high and you get some hot air coming out, you know the condenser is working now. It should always be blowing warmer then ambient air out of the condenser. Email me for a quicker response tomorrow if you need help. Stojicrepair@gmail.com

As you can see, replacing the furnace is not something that’s crazy technical. If you feel confident doing it, I can help you find the right furnace for your house. They come pretty dialed in on the gas pressure. I haven’t had a single one that was way off on the gas pressure. $500 sounds reasonable for an inducer replacement if that’s the part and labor.

So what is the reasoning for using the vacuum pump after the nitrogen pressure test? If you're showing no loss of pressure after the nitrogen test, Im assuming its standard to test for outward pressure on the pipes, and the inward suction on the pipes as well?
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Год назад
No the vacuum is to remove any moisture and oxygen from the lines. Then when you introduce your refrigerant into the pipes, you are going from a vacuum to positive pressure. No air or moisture should ever enter those lines.
@VisionStance
@VisionStance 10 месяцев назад
There is no outward pressure on the refrigerant lines! You only pressurize the coil during leak search, but that practice has long been abandoned as no one removes coils anymore to find leaks and then reinstalls the same coil. too expensive
@onemoreboat
@onemoreboat Год назад
Is there any way to rent the tools rather than buy them like the vacuum pump, nitrogen bottle and evacuation pump? It's a lot of expense for a one time use.
@diyhvacguy
@diyhvacguy Год назад
Not really. They’re specialty tools but even if you were to buy the tools and resell them you’d be in it a lot cheaper then paying a company. You can also do everything up to the brazing and vacuum procedure and just have a small HVAC company do that last portion for relatively cheap and that way you don’t have to buy a vacuum pump, brazing tanks, nitrogen etc. etc.
@VisionStance

There are some mini splits that come with pre-charged winds, but not for regular residential split systems. You can always have a contractor come in and braise the joints and pull a vacuum on the system possibly. I did this for a customer not too long ago. He fitted everything and had it ready to go so I put my nitrogen flow on it braised it pulled a vacuum and tested out the system. it was a pretty easy process. If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask. Cheers, Dave.

Why did you cut 1.5 inch off of the plenum to slide the coil? Now there’s a big gap between the coil and plenum and only securing it with metal tape. Sucks for the person that has to come back to replace the furnace only cuz that coil has a high chance of falling.
