Tish… your description of the eCVT is actually the description of the regular CVT. The Honda eCVT works NOTHING like that. It has no pulleys or belt. The eCVT provides electric power to the main motor and battery via a second motor, and at lower speeds (below about 40mph) only the electric motor powers the wheels. The engine kicks in when more electricity needs to be generated. It works as a series hybrid at these speeds. That means it works as an EV, but with an engine to generate electricity, straight to the drive motor, to the battery, or to both. Then, at higher speeds, a dual clutch plate mechanism switches the drive from the electric to the single mechanical gear, and now it is driven solely by the petrol engine at motorway speeds. If additional power is needed at those speeds, the double clutch can also add power from the battery to to the electric motor and re-engage it alongside the petrol to add to the drivetrain. This is a parallel hybrid application (electric works in parallel with petrol to power the wheels). So in fact, the eCVT has no real transmission. It just has a dual clutch pack to switch from it driving like an EV to it driving like an ICE with single drive ratios for each. Sounds complex, but mechanically it’s super simple and this reliable.
@@AutoSocialUKI love hybrids and I’m fascinated by how they work as there are so many variations. It gets more complex because Toyota, Ford and Honda all call their transmissions “eCVT”, but the Honda system is very different that the other two, which are nearly identical.
Yes, it really doesn't need transmission because it works like an EV the majority of the time. Only above a certain speed you get the ICE directly connected to the front wheels. @AutoSocialUK, thanks a lot for the nice review.
Thank you for the nice presentation of this car. Two things that I have observed and could be improved: 1st: please use different sized (small and large) people to show the realy space in the car interior. 2nd: the both metal selectors on the steering wheel are not used for the gearbox, they are used to control the braking intensity and to return the braking energy to the hybrid battery!
Great video Tish and with every video, you seem to be getting better and better. This car is brilliant, just like the new Civic but they need to do something about the price. Their cars are getting way too expensive and touching BMW, Merc and Audi prices and they clearly don't have that level of refinement despite producing powerful fuel efficient engines. Thumbs up given and keep up the good work 👍
German cars are overpriced for what they are though when you look behind the facade. Behind the badge there is some pretty questionable quality especially parts used under the bonnet. Honda's may look pricy at first but run one beyond 10 years old and it all starts to make a lot of sense - unlike money pit German motors.

@@edmundhayes1840 In America, they don’t get the HR-V that is sold in Europe; that is classed as a B-SUV. So it kinda makes sense for the ZR-V (classed as a small C-SUV) to be named the HR-V there.
That's correct, Australia does receive both the HR-V and ZR-V! The new HR-V launched here last year, while the ZR-V came like three or four months ago. So, Tish saying that the ZR-V has been on sale here in Australia for over a year is incorrect.
Looks a great car and a good family option a bit different from the usual choices I agree with you Tish they needed a cheaper version as well as Honda can be expensive should do well and be reliable and cheap to run
This isn't a Civic zrv! The front isn't based on the new Civic, and the rear is nothing like a crv! This is in fact the American hrv which has been on sale for ages!
I accidentally said Civic because I was thinking about it sitting on the Civic platform but this is a ZRV in the UK, regardless of what it is elsewhere in the world 😊
Ordered a Sport for our next motability car. Should be picking it up next month. Just seems like a very intriguing car and has all the kit I look for in a car, and then a bit more. Would have spent a bit more on a Ford Kuga but adaptive cruise control, which should be standard on all cars IMO, was an expensive extra. Never had an automatic as a daily driver, so that'll be "fun" to get my head around.
@@samadlington12 All their colours are available at no extra cost apart from the diamond pearl, I think it's called? Initially ordered white but since changed it to red. Were told by the dealer that there's no wait for the Sport.
Lovely SUV all round. Honda's are the real deal when it comes to quality and reliability unlike so called 'premium badged' alternatives. I speak from experience BTW.
Hmm, not sure about being on sale in Australia for a long time, I can only see 4x ZRVs available Australia wide, all new to order cars. But the 2.0 hybrid here is around £28,000 ($54,000 AUD). There is also a 1.5 turbo available for less $. Enjoyed the review Tish. Cheers
@@AutoSocialUK The ZRV is called the HRV in the US. In Oz, we have both the HRV and ZRV with the ZRV making its debut around June/July 2023 though orders have been taken since May 2023.
The ZRV looks great. I like the blue as well. But, come Honda let's take on VW and bring out a Type R version to show them their R-Line range isn't as quick as they thought it was.😂
Love the color of this ZR-V, Tish - though like yourself - I'm not a big fan of those gear selector buttons (physical ones for me, too!). It definitely looks like it was made for someone of your size (5'5") than myself (I'm about 6'), which is why I currently drive the larger CR-V. And just a side note, you look quite stunning in that green ensemble, too. ;) #gorgeous
I’m a Civic driver currently and do I like the ZRV ? Yes , defiantly as shown here and think it looks fantastic Would I buy it ? No at nearly £40,000 it’s just unaffordable like most new cars nowadays. With depreciation almost non existent currently it’s unlikely to be affordable to me until it reaches at least 4 years old. I may pay a trip to my dealer to have a nose anyway .As ever Tish great review , been a subscriber of your channel for a long time now and seen you come from your early days to your very polished and professional reviews I watch now. I’d so like to see you on Car Wow and the like to give your presenting talent greater exposure.
I wish American Honda would allow this hybrid powertrain (only now beginning to be offered in the '25 Civic) to be sold in North America's HR-V. Nearing 2025, it is very overdue. The underpowered, non-hybrid unit offered here is the one thing that absolutely keeps me from considering an HR-V.
have just ordered the sport trim i liked the blue in your video but they didnt have a sample so i ended up getting the ruse black as i could actually see it, just worried now that with al the black trim and privacy glass thsat its going to be very dark ( bat mobile)
Your description of the eCVT is wrong imo. An eCVT doesn't have the pulleys you mention, but an epycyclic gear that enables electric motor power and combustion power to combine. A pretty serious mistake.
2:02 I'm sorry, but the ZR-V hasn't been on sale here in Australia for over a year - It launched here in late May 2023. The new HR-V launched here in late March 2022, is this what you meant to refer to?
On sale in Australia for a year? Not really, it was announced about 6 months ago but deliveries only started very recently. In fact I've yet to see one on the road.
I see Honda adapted quickly from the Civic lower quality decisions: better materials (especially in the back), head rest in the back are fully collapsible to offer full view on the rear glass, back arm rest is at elbow level and not low as in the Civic, white roof in the Sport trim, metal padels on the steering wheel.
Gotta be honest and say whilst I like the look of it , the price plus the insurance group being twice what my current car is plus the smaller boot than what my current car is would ultimately mean a no from me.
The elephant in the room has to be that the current CR-V is still available, is a much more practical car, hybrid system pretty much identical and with discounts a top EX model can be had for less than the asking price of the ZR-V. I think I know which will have better residuals too come trade in time. At this price point unfortunately I think the ZR-V will struggle but that had to price it above the HR-V, which is why it is so expensive.
Stunning car, previously been a honda fan boy for 15 years but fancied something different in 2023 and went for a rival, but I would definitely love this zrv in sport trim so may return some day 🤧....... Good review as always Tish love the nails darling very pretty
You may be a Honda fan boy, but are we looking at the same car? That is one ugly piece of design - a big, fat, rounded SUV with a horrible front end. Being Honda, I'm sure it's well built and will be reliable, but I really hope SUV's are consigned to history very soon!
@@tonyb3629 disagree with you on the looks, I like it and as for the SUV argument I need one and have opted for my first SUV due to finding it difficult to enter and exit lower sportier vehicles as I have previously driven the past 25 years, I am not a young person and my body has unfortunately suffered over the years so for me SUVs are just far more comfortable and practical for me and my 3 large dogs I really don't care about trying to look good for other people it's more about what's right for my own life
To be fair at the set price you get a lot of items as standard. VW ranges are cheaper but once you add on actual extras that are needed e.g. parking sensors the cost goes beyond 42k
How many of these V cars are they going to make? CR-V, HR-V and now the ZR-V, what's next? Any way, nice 👍 and simple interior, roomie and spacious. The exterior design looks just like the HR-V with a few changes and It's to small.
Yes they do adjust the level of regen, strange that they opted to make them out of metal though as they look more like great selection that ever. I’m assuming you mean I called it something other than ZRV? See…. Not as easy as it seems is it? 😂
Inaccurate review. There are no gears, or CVT pulleys &belt, the "gear shifters" behind the steering wheel are for the seven braking. The presenter needs to watch the official Honda presentation. I own a Civic HEV, great car
Honda's international marketing strategy is bizarre - Here in Canada, the ZR-V is actually called the HR-V and it has a 158 bhp engine and costs, get this, the equivalent of 21,000 pounds! Also, we don't even get your HR-V by any name! How strange!
Not that strange. North America and China have strong preferences for larger vehicles. The fuel is cheaper and roads/parking spaces are larger there. This vehicle is the sole SUV smaller than the CR-V. In other regions there is a high demand for even smaller SUVs, so they added an even smaller one. North America is getting the hybrid engine for the Civic and likely the HR-V next year.
The last 6 cars I’ve had have been hondas but 40 grand it’s just to expensive 3 years warranty I will be having a Toyota next time 10 years warranty no brainer if anything goes wrong with this after 3 years it will cost a fortune and compared to a Audi interior no in the same ballpark

Nope you'd have to be mad (or have little car knowledge) to buy the Kia Sportage over this. The Honda's engineering and quality are far superior and it looks better. The Sportage is an ugly mess.

@@dac00007 If you believe daft (sponsored) surveys like JD Power you'll believe anything. Research Kia/Hyundai widespread problems with engine failures/fires, oil burn issues from low mileages etc. Issues also with LG battery cells in BEV models with ongoing recalls. Have a look at Scotty Kilmer's videos on Kia/Hyundai problems - based on real owners problems! Kia /Hyundai pretend to make quality cars. They may impress you mate but they don't me...
If i had 40 grand to spend on a motor,this would not be my choice.Just have a quick butchers ata what 2 year 3 year old used premium cars you could buy with that money.
