The New Hope & Ivyland Railroad has been a staple tourist and railfan staple in eastern Pennsylvania, operating over former Reading Railroad trackage between New Hope and Ivyland, PA connecting with SEPTA's network. A fall tradition for both this channel and thousands of passengers every year is to witness the stunning fall leaves as a backdrop to vintage trains! Steam locomotive #40 was handling the extra-distance Fall Excursions to Buckingham, while GP9u was in charge of the Lahaska trains. History of NH&I 40:
Originally built for the Lancaster & Chester Railway in South Carolina, 40 was outshopped from the Baldwin Works in Philadelphia in 1925 for a cost of nearly $25,000. It would work for the LC until 1947 when it was retired and sold to the Cliffside Railroad in North Carolina. In 1962, the locomotive was acquired by Steam Trains Inc, the precursor to the New Hope & Ivyland. 40 would remain inoperable until 1975 when it was restored to operating condition and has been running ever since.
