The thick and extensive woods of Bucks County, Pennsylvania showcase the beauty of fall foliage around this time of the year. We find the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad cutting through these spectacularly vibrant colors in a steam powered excursion showcasing the reds, yellows, and oranges that are so heavily associated with late October. The locomotive that would be fired up for these trips is the railroad's lone active steam locomotive, 2-8-0 consolidation 40. We find 40 taking an unusually long trip along the trackage of the New Hope & Ivyland, departing from New Hope's depot to None Such Farm, which today is considered rare mileage for steam. Sporting a 6" Crosby 3 chime and a five car train, the locomotive and crew put on a wonderful show today as 40 blasted through the foliage. A neat addition to today's train is a newly acquired Reading Company coach, still painted in the correct colors and lettered as such on one side for the time being until it is finally repainted into New Hope & Ivyland's normal colors. We also were able to catch the traditional excursions of the day, which was a push-pull operation with two diesel locomotives, 2918 and 8218, on either end. Considering the changing weather and conditions throughout the day, it was an overall beautiful October day for steam and foliage.
History of NH&I 40:
New Hope & Ivyland 40 is a 2-8-0 consolidation built in December of 1925 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA. The engine was originally built for Lancaster & Chester Railroad in South Carolina. In 1967, 40 was eventually operated occasionally on the newly formed New Hope & Ivyland Railroad alongside Canadian National 1533. In 2014, a mandatory 1,472 day inspection sidelined 40 until late 2017, when the locomotive was finally returned to service after the major rebuild. Today she shines a New Hope & Ivyland's lone steam star, and is sight well worth it for any rail buff.
