Within a deep and narrow cave in South Africa, paleoanthropologist Lee Berger and his team found fossil remains belonging to the newest member of our human family. The Homo naledi discovery adds another exciting chapter to the human evolution story by introducing an ancestor that was primitive but shared physical characteristics with modern humans.
Because the cave system where the bones were located was extremely difficult to access, it could be speculated that these hominins practiced a behavior previously believed to be modern: that of deliberately disposing of their dead underground.

Stupid me, I actually had high hopes for a minute that I would be able to scroll the comments and be able to extract some more information about this discovery from other people who are just genuinely interested in the discovery of this itself and NOT interested in going off on yet another rant about creationism versus evolution and blah blah blah... Come on people, can't we ever just talk about the actual video itself without all this other arguing for once!!!!!

+Felix “A Fortiori” Culpa Glad I found you. Im surprised at the representation of Homo Naledi in the sculpture. Looks like some very little shoulders, right? Just an all over little guy. Seems like it would have been hard to be at the top of the food chain in Africa with that stature. He looks like the Homo Floresiensis, which were not at risk being that small since they lived on an island.

+Felix “A Fortiori” Culpa Have they done any dating on it yet? Another question that comes up is where specie fits in with the "common ancestor" theory? It should not be too difficult to follow the development and fits in nicely with what is already known from the millions of fossils already available? What is also an interesting factor is of course the decision on what constitutes "humanity". Brain size? Whales apparently have bigger brains. Symbolic actions? What are considered symbolic actions that will distinguish between the various animals. Why is it a factor? Interestingly enough, it is apparently not a distinguishing factor to this definition of "homo sapiens". the species of bipedal primates to which modern humans belong, characterized by a brain capacity averaging 1400 cc (85 cubic in.) and by dependence upon language and the creation and utilization of complex tools.

@@jimmyarbutus2555 I won’t venture a guess as to what planet you’re from, but I will briefly address your question. May I state, first, that I am impressed, as I can see you’ve mastered some sort of language translator (not to mention the communication device) to enable you to post that comment. You see….billions of earth’s inhabitants (humans) oppose scientific findings, because those findings consistently conflict with what religious people believe. That’s not to assume that these same inhabitants oppose all aspects of science; rather, mere portions of it. I see that you’ve taken the name Jimmy Arbutus. Was that a random selection, or was there some type of influence involved? Also, what kind of nourishment does your species partake of? How many genders does your planet consist of? Here on earth, we lived thousands of years believing we had but two genders, but now several other variants are emerging. it’s quite perplexing, to say the least. So perplexing that it causes one to occasionally imbibe an alcoholic beverage. More on that later, if you so wish. If you require companionship of the opposite gender, perhaps I could lend you the one I am currently involved with as I am unfortunately growing tired of. Merely respond here and I will assist you. I wish you adventure and good fortune in your search.

I don't understand creationists. They ask for transitional fossils and there are already over half a dozen but they nonetheless ask for more, then we find this new one, which is essentially the 7th or 8th one now and they say "i don't believe it for a second." But why? It's not like we can manufacture bones, bones are very complicated things. We simply find them and piece them back together. In fact I'm piecing together a dead squirrel carcass that I found at work a few days ago. I'm going to show it to a group of kids. So I can't see why creationists won't just change their minds and say, "wow I asked for a transitional fossil and they found one. I have to rethink some things." Anyways, How old is it?

@UnknownUser-lz2iw
@UnknownUser-lz2iw 9 лет назад
+doodelay People find bones of animals and in various places and call them complete skeletons. Then to complete the delusion they make paintings to show the world what they must have looked like in life. And of course, they have to have human hands and feet. Even when they didn't. They make a lot of assumptions but can never prove anything. There has never been one single case of one living creature evolving into something else. It has never, ever happened and there is no proof of it. Birds may grow longer beaks but they are still birds. Monkeys may have varying feet but they are still monkeys. They will never be human or anything else. Most of the previous finds, this one too probably, are bones in various places, miles apart, and they put them together how they think they should go. Most, if not all, of the monkey bones they call human ancestors have been debunked. A simple internet search proves this. People just don't want to believe it is fake. If creation is real that means we have a creator. If we have a creator it means he is in charge of us. If he is in charge of us he probably wants something. If he wants something from us we have to obey him. People, for the most part, don't want a God in charge of them because they like their sinful lives too much. Does this require some faith? Yes. Does the religion of evolution require faith too? You better believe it. To think that everything was created from an explosion from NOTHING requires a lot of faith because it can't be proven at all. You have to believe in the big bang and BELIEVE in evolution. Faith is required no matter what.

While I completely understand the need to remove the bones for further research, I am curious to know the steps the team took to record the context in which they were found. I earnestly hope records were made of how they were scattered etc. Were the bones laid there or the result of a predator's left overs.
@NorthForkFisherman
@NorthForkFisherman 5 лет назад
Excellent questions. Apparently, due to the number and completeness of the remains, it's most likely that other hominids placed them there. Predators and scavengers would have scattered the remains, leaving tell-tale toothmarks on the bones. The smaller parts like hands and feet would have been lost as they would've been eaten nearly whole and digested. So the question then is, if predation wasn't the cause of this and others of the same species were...why? Why take these so far down into a cave system where there's no light.

It is quite a mystery how members of this species managed to take their dead through this very convoluted rout to inter them in the chamber where the bones were found. Just some speculation. Perhaps some of these early hominoids had a magnetic sense such as some birds are said to have. This combined with a good spacial memory, would have allowed them to navigate in the dark as they oriented with the earth's magnetic field. I don't know if the tiny bits of magnetic material in their brains would have maintained their magnetism over the years since they died but perhaps a magnet drawn through the dirt on the floor of the cave would collect thes.

I have so many questions. Such as: What makes you think this was a burial ground they continued to return to instead of just a space a group of them escaped to. Maybe from weather, an enemy, wildlife, etc. Maybe a small detachment of them fell into the pit and were buried to prevent the stench of routing flesh giving up their location. How is that less feasible than a burial ground which required people to drag bodies through a7 inch gap?

Ginsuma There is nothing supernatural to observe you ignorant piece of shit. Why do you think it's called Super Natural? Because it can't be observed in nature. Scientist deal with things that can be observed. They aren't manipulating studies to satisfy their followers -- like creationist -- I really shouldn't even try to address such stupidity. People like you make me want to break my keyboard over my head. You just flip arguments, and project your inconsistencies onto the other side. When Scientist "disagree with their own theories after discovering new information". Does not show failure, it shows correction in a theory. And it usually isn't an extraordinary change, or starting over because it was completely wrong. It is other Scientist finding corrections that are found to be correct by the majority of others who peer reviewed the study. Meanwhile Creationist aren't testing, hypothesizing, or using any kind of Scientific, or providing any method of proving their theories to be true. Not to mention that the Creationist movement can't even agree on what really happened. More than half of the Creationist movement had already said that; Evolution of the Universe, and especially species; is already proven to be a fact. But as I said earlier, I most likely am wasting my time here. *Preparing my anus for the incoming Straw manning and Ad-hominems*

Really, all these posts by creationists trolling this remarkable discovery, makes me very scared about our future on earth. Are we heading towards an Idiocracy? If there is a creator, why not celebrate the fact that he has been around here for longer than you believe, and he is more complex, mystifying and that the universe is so much more interesting and great than your 2000 year old book? You are actually underselling or underestimating your creator if you really believe life is as simple and short as the historical events depicted in the bible and other creationist literature.

It seems to make more sense that they knew by hiding the dead away from everything, where almost nothing could get to them, helped avoid predators. Maybe they also knew it helped them avoid disease. It is even possible they were also trying to ensure the dead were remembered as they were, but putting a strong ritual behind it seems less likely. The infrastructure for such rituals probably weren't as strong as they'd become 100,000 years later.
