These reviews are spot on. Zero waffle, very factual and a great presenter with a great sense of humour. He catches me off guard with his little comments and jokes that make me actually laugh. Well done to the team involved keep it up!
Got to admit, for not being a huge Hyundai guy, this car does appeal to me. I like its design, cause it stands out (at least it does currently until other cars pop up in the near future from writing this). It seems like a nice step in to the direction of how EV's should be. Not just a vehicle to bring you from A to B, but something that also gives more than just being a drivable tool. This seems like it delivers that multi-purpose kind of satisfaction. Sure other cars do that too, and some may offer more luxury or comfort. But this seems to be a middle-route that divides other branches and their models. Off the car topic, I hope that the EU and the rest of the world start making charging stations in a more common frequency. Currently I feel like, despite there are a bunch, some areas in some countries lack a lot of them. Which may make people hesitate to get an EV to begin with. Perhaps Autotrader could do an episode about this.
I rented a hyundai Elentra in 2016 on vacation and my experience with it was very bland and unammusing. So naturally I've never cared for hyundai. But these last 6 years ive seen them produce some cars that I think beat some luxury makers. KUDOS to the south korean company really making leaps and bounds when it comes to raising its reputation. They have taken their design from a normal low end economy car to high end while still keeping the prices reasonably low
I am so ready for this thing! Finally, a mainstream automaker taking the fight to Tesla... for real. Not just saying stuff. It's a truly compelling EV in every single way.
Well not really, shit autonomous driving you dont know what luxury is until FSD/Tesla autonomous, small storage, worse range, much slower, no super computer inside still that runs apps/smooth af display, cheapo seat, towing, charger network prices/availibility, glass roof not as sexy for the price, the interior damping nowhere near as nice, since only a few thousand made much less custom ability, obviously Hyundais current bad streak with electric car reliability. Is it a great car for the price? Yep. But its rough to say it is Killer of Tesla who is barely keeping up with building more cars that sell 15k above their build price, I really do hope tesla makes a smaller cuv like this for 25k cause that is the price that will ve amazing.
@@nemos890 u high bro? stop hallucinating. Lemme red pilled you. In about 5 years later, Tesla will eventually getting dethrone by other company like Lucid, Hyundai, KIA, Fisker, ... Stop dreaming kid
@@nemos890 You may be seeing Tesla through rose tinted glasses young man...... It seems you haven't watched Sandy Munro's video on the Tesla Model 3. His company reverse engineered one, and gave his opinion on how it's designed and built. It's no Holy Grail..... And Tesla is worth more than all those others put together? To whom? You? VW have invested 800 billion (yes, BILLION) Euros in EV production over 3 Continents. Volkswagen's R & D budget alone will make Tesla's R & D budget look like a Boy Scout's pocket money. Get real........ You do know that Hyundai are a huge multinational? They are involved in huge civil engineering projects, and other things too like shipbuilding. Has Mr Musk built any ships or bridges yet? Toyota hold the honour of having produced the World's best selling car, the Corolla. They began building the Corolla in 1966, and have made around 50 million of them. I mention this just to give you a sense of scale here......because you seem to lack it.
"This is how you design a proper car interior." Proper? ))) Cheap shiny plastic, weird moving console you'll never move, two tiny screens with bad graphics, lack of 7-seater option, etc.
As a Tesla owner, I love the look of the Ioniq and the incredible blind spot system, and I'm rooting for it to succeed--but it seems so far behind everything else about Teslas. Keep in mind that an official range of 250 miles is nowhere near that in reality. 1. the range will decrease significantly in the first year 2. you don't run any of these cars at 100% or below 10% if you can avoid it, it's very hard on the battery, and in my experience you have to drive *very* gently to meet the range estimates. This means a lot of people will need access to chargers on a regular basis, and you'll find out what an annoyance that is outside of Tesla. Also, you miss out on the driving experience of Tesla, i.e. the acceleration, autopilot, sound system, infotainment. If you want to buy a car on pure looks and have only very short drives, then by all means choose this--I look forward to seeing them on the road. But if you have the opportunity, you should spend some time driving both of them first.
@@rangefinderphotography6273 are you American by any chance? Because in Luxembourg I see EV chargers and fast chargers everywhere, like in town theres dedicated EV parking spots everywhere with chargers. And I’ve actually never seen a Tesla charger except I think in the UK on the motorway once or twice.
This and the EV6 are the cars of 2021/2022, my choice is the KIA over the Hyundai but charging and the UI s are the same so it is down to looks and interior.
@@Iamallwaysright1 yea but when it suits you, you’re allowed to hate on Tesla for example, don’t be a hypocrite. And FYI that wasn’t negativity just facts 😉
If I'm not mistaken it's pronounced "hyun - day" meaning modern. Looks like they're really living up to their name. This car is going to be a massive winner.
Hyundai and Kia was really late to the auto industry, but they are one of the pioneers into the electric car industry. I can definitely seem them become one of the best in that field- especially when they don't have to climb a massive hill to compete.
Only issue i noticed was that there was alot of road noise when car was in motion. Which tells me sound proofing is not great on this vehicle. Apart from that good car.
Went on a camping trip , had a 2 burner hot plate plugged in and an air fryer and it shit me down after a few min , said to much load , works fine one at a time
The only bad point for me is the range. They should've gone with bigger battery. Like 85kW-90kW. With their efficiency, it would be perfect. Everything else is great. That is why I will test also Ford Mach-E Extended. Was already in the car and feels great. I tried Tesla model 3 two times, sure, its fast and all, but it is soulless. It doesn't have that thing that makes you feel it. If I go for Tesla, it will be second hand model S. If I go for new EV, for now, it is this Ioniq 5, Ford Mach-E or maybe Audi Q4 50. For a lease, as I am sure the EVs in 5 years will be two times better.
A larger battery directly correlates to a higher price point and my guess is Hyundai never expected to receive this much praise. If the initial attention translates to sales momentum, they will probably add more range.
I would like to see a video where you review a newer model Nissan Leaf and compare them to the other newer EVs like the Ionic. Trying to decide on what to buy.
Hyundai has upped their game so much in international markets. In a few years I think they'll be trusted like Toyota. What you need/want with the quality and reliability you can trust
Doesn't the parking in tight spaces feature mean that peope with cars that don't have that feature might not be able to get back into their car after you've parked so close? Also surely a sliding glove draw as opposed to a normal hinged glove box is more likely to bang against your knees when it's open. Otherwise a very impressive EV.
@@grahamstefaan I agree lol, car looks like it can’t decide whether to look like a brick or a retro hippy car (rear lights look rubbishy, along with the whole car)
I completely agree. A natural presenter; articulate and with a good rhythm to his speech. There aren’t many car reviewers who I listen to all the way to the end but this guy… every time. 👍🏻
"others give you one or the other but this gives you everything"... watching a lot of these hyundai and kia reviews, i think this line should be their sales pitch
@@siralanturing9103 i checked out the new BMW i4 and that is pretty much what i noticed... everything is on the optional list 😂 i thought damn do i even get the steering wheel?
@@oddpaw8124 neither of old ioniq nor Kona have a been built to be only ev and you can see that in either interior space or range. Kia Niro is a nice electric car but again the price range is 30% over comparable ice car
I had it for two days. This is by far the nicest and most relaxing car to drive, it is superb in every aspect. If I had to choose one car for the rest of the life, this would be the one. It is really as good as the reviews say. As for the range, I had RWD 58kWh hour model, and I was slaming it hard on highway, did some normal driving (50/50 mix of slaming to full and highway in 150km/h, and half 130 kmh highway and normal driving), it can easily do 380 kilometers, with 130 km/h on highway.
@@SuicidalNapk1n for me it was comfortable, but we don't really bad roads where I live so I might be a bit biased. I think it is a bit on a firmer side, but that pays off in corners where car doesn't feel heavy.
@@supersecularboypants Pretty satisfied. Im just a bit disappointed with the range and consumption at highway speed. At 120-130kmh Its pretty thirsty. But no problems so far
I'm looking for a replacement for my W222 S550, placed an order for the Emira and this Hyundai seems like the best car to have a daily alongside the lotus.
For a 90's kid that grew up with pixelated video games, the design of the exterior and interior for that matter just makes me tingle inside. Any retro-futuristic, cyberpunk design makes me salivate at the prospect of owning such a car, and I think that's the idea why they went with this. Most of us younger generation that started to afford cars are more interested in quirky designs than classic ones that you see in a Mercedes or BMW. At least that's my theory.
The big turn down for me is cargo space for such a big car ... i thought it is smaller and the cargo is fitting but after i have seen it next to a normal human, IDK how they cut down the cargo space so much ... Even if this looks better then Tesla Model Y , it is not practical ... but because the Cybertruck will have back wheel steering, i will stay on hold and wait to see how that is ... Cybertruck will be the best utility vehicle on the market, and i hope it can have the charging feature to save other tesla on the road with a buddy charge cable system.
I've chosen this car over TMY and I'm really happy about it. My main points were: - screen behind the wheel with speedometer and other controls - HUD - V2L (to charge electric grill from the car, while camping) - ventilated seats, adjustable headrest - better suspension than Tesla, much smoother - better sound isolation Acceleration is really fast enough.
Same designer Giorgetto Giugiaro who designed the Lanica Delta also designed the Hyundai Pony/Excel on which the Ioniq 5 is inspired from. That's why it looks so similar.
@@Iamallwaysright1 Ah fascinating, thanks I didn't know that! Every day's a school day :) Makes me like it all the more now. The Lancia Delta Evo 2 is possibly my favourite looking car ever.
The original Leaf Tekna, of course, had a solar panel in its roof to keep the 12V battery topped up! So it would be good if Hyundai could do this with the Ioniq 5!
Only the 1st Edition will have solar panels on the roof. Once it is sold, it will not be offered as an option. Wonder how much of kW you can get on the not sunny but not too cloudy day either for 8 hours on the street. If you could get enough to go back home, it could be worth it. Any solar panel experts here to chime in?
Walked out of a school I teach at here in Korea and one of these was parked right next to my car. I had to walk around the back to check out what it was. Looks much better in person than the video shows.
@@hbombfreak I rented a Hyundai Excel at Brisbane Airport in the early 2000s. The bubbly bulbous one. It was a piece of junk but it was cheap to rent and I only needed it for 4 days. It's crazy that this is the same company as Genesis which has some of the most beautiful luxury cars. Thing change dramatically in two decades.
It is as if Hyundai had taken their time observing the other automakers, the things they were doing right and wrong and brought out a pure EV that on the first try, is doing it correctly. Everything about the car appears to be intentional.
@@arapaimagold8088 thats the point, they are ICE cars with EV motors. This is their first car designed from ground up as a pure EV. No ICE version. Not a mixed scenario design but a full EV design from ground up to take benefit of EV drive train to the fullest.
@@kfx3907 But this have zero in the performance compartment. Its a really good car, but I would never, ever trade my Model 3 Performance for one. But for 99% of EV buyers out there its brilliant :)
Then you check they needed a shit ton of recalls for tucson/santa fe and they only did that when korean prosecutors barged in their offices. And ioniq 5 can catch on fire...sometimes when it rains lol
@@dwade3202 lol, you're uninformed. Check the recall list by each countries official regulators. Hyundai has lesser recall than the major manufacturers like Toyota, honda, bmw etc
@@dwade3202 Ioniq 5 is not out yet in most markets. what recall?? why are you talking out of your rear? If you mean the Kona EV, the same of the batteries were assembled the wrong way by a manufacturer in China they no longer work with. as D Wade said above, overall they have less recalls than other manufacturers and 100k mile warranty in the US.
@Abhisar Choubey kia actually just killed off the stinger, a tragedy imo. Everyone says it's beautiful and should be more popular but nobody was buying them unfortunately
Iv been loving my 2017 Ioniq, 100,000 on her from ubering and she's been great, except for the racoon and metal debris on the road messing up my bottom bumper. I definitely will probably upgrade to the 2022-2023 Ioniq 5
Although ioniq 5 and ld3 & id 4 have batteries from SK ionvation, ioniq 5 has the silicon carbide inverter and are very efficient, on 800v. id is shit when charging in winter with small and medium battery. VW trying to rip off customers as usual. Volskwagen makes more money by selling ICE cars.
and the Ioniq 5 still it manages to weigh about 50kg less than the ID.4 while offering superior drivetrain performance. Let's see what Sandy Munro has to say about Ioniq5. So far the ID.4 and the Mach E seem to be years behind Tesla in terms of drive-train efficiency/build quality.
Rory - great review as ever, but you missed one of the most important points - the speed of charging. Speed of charge is as critical if not more so than range and this car can take the 350Kw chargers that are being built all over the UK. For long distance driving that's brilliant as it charges in I think 18 minutes from 10% to 80%. As an EV driver I can promise you this is the most significant step forward only previously available in Porshe Taycan or Tesla. Kia EV6 has the same architecture. These 2 brands are leading the way for EVs. Can't wait to see what they bring out in the smaller car sector. But as always the public charger network needs to keep up, which Gridserve thankfully are working hard to achieve.
@@nickolaki And how's it doing on continental Europe? Improving at the same rate as UK? Last time I looked the French charging infrastructure was looking way behind... An opportunity for Gridserve to expand outside the UK perhaps!
@@evornotev7794 EV friendly countries like Norway and Netherlands are great, in most regions much better than UK. Some regions are lagging a bit behind. German, Belgium and supposedly Portugal are also doing quite well. France is still quite problematic but slowly improving.
Tesla is 400 volt and is slower on the charging curve. This is 800 volt like Taican and Audi GT. Insideev had some comparative test where the Tesla where it was like 10 minutes more for 10 to 80%, but had longer range. But if I am not mistaken it was against the Model 3. This truly is one of the most important tech of this car, its like more than twice as fast to charge than any of the VW meb platform EV. It has set a new standard in the normal consumer market.
the exterior looks like a cheap Asian copy of a Lancia Delta, thats true, and the interior looks like a cheap Asian copy of the Mercedes A-class. Cant see why people are so hyped about that odd thing.
@@vonrichthofen5734 In which case we'll need to see how well it sells. I understand there are already 30'000 orders for it... After all, people only buy the cars they like.
@@noclu4u384 Ah the days of the 8 track. In cold weather they would slow down, so they needed a little warm up with the defrost cycle on the dash to play at almost normal speed. A gas of tank would cost $12, and I would earn $5 per hour, which was a good wage. Ironically, the price of electricity here in British Columbia costs the same to fill up an EV battery as much as it did to fill up a tank of gas 40 years ago. ICE is toast!!. Cheers from Canada.
