Ioniq 5 was '80s ideals meeting 2020's design, this takes its ideals from the '90s and I love it. It reminds me of my parents' Carina II and a slew of '90s family saloons, but melded with Porsche speed and that hint of '40s class. It's a nostalgia smoothie and I love it.
@@Nudge822 I heard this car looks like 15 different cars starting from cars from the 1940's. Did the 15 other manufacturers copy each other Chinese style too?
Hyundai have come such a long way from being a punchline to being genuinely desirable and arguably the leader in EVs. The IONIQ 5 was the first EV that I actually wanted. The 6 has become the first EV I'm lusting after.

I remember my dad’s first car was a Hyundai Excel in the 80’s. Back then, we were just proud that a Korean car was actually sold in the US, being immigrants from there. Just so proud of how far along Hyundai and the Korean economy has come along. From a war devastated country, to an economic superpower. Well done!🇺🇸🇰🇷

But if one day I am forced for X or Y reason to own an electric car, I would make it autonomous and I'm counterbalance my noodle, if it's not allowed or better prohibited, I'm not a cash cow.. . In my region of France there are at least 340 days of sunshine per year, so I will either stick a whole bunch of solar panels on it of the same type , which are glued to the hulls of racing sailboats, they are Multicristalain and have the particularity of recharging even in rainy weather, all coupled to a charge regulator and a charge dispatcher to the different batteries... Otherwise there is even simpler and less expensive to set up, the principle is simple, to manufacture Electricity like that of the lighting of a bicycle, the DYNAMO, improved of course on ball bearings for example with a small generator 12volts output and the same charge regulators and dispatchers. Hyundai really have come a long way. I have an Ioniq 5 and I love it, having come from a Golf R before and several BMW/Mercedes before that I never in a month of sundays thought I would own a Hyundai. The minute I saw it I knew I had to have it. Plus, it's ENORMOUS inside and rely belies it's appearance of size from the outside.
Can’t wait to spot one in real life. Hyundai real are leading the way, all credit to them using bold steps that I wish other manufacturers could adopt. The best thing is it’ll be sensibly priced unlike where “higher end” manufacturers are heading. Great video Jonny 💪
Hyundai are absolutely smashing it. Loved the 5, really don't like the 6, but it's brilliant that a company like Hyundai are willing to take big risks on mad designs. If this is the electric future, bring it on.
I never thought I’d ever want a Hyundai but I really like the Ioniq range. Still think I’d take the 5 over the 6 but if this is what they are doing now, I’m looking forward to what they produce in the future.
The interesting thing will be how much extra range it gets vs the 5. The drag coefficient is so good on the 6. Not only is it range but range per charging minute that will increase.
I am on my third EV, all Kia, a family of Hyundai. My sister is currently driving Hyundai Kona with almost 300 mile range even after 3 years. Ioniq is definitely a better designed car, but Hyundai still needs to do better on head room. Beautiful car. And most people are too scared of the range. Once I drove my 92 mile range for 4 years, any EV that gives me more than 200 miles is a worry free automobile.
@@jackiebang4717 I’ve never driven a full ev, only petrol hybrids. The amount of driving I do for work, having to stop to charge would add a lot of time to my day. I’m looking forward to see how the range of ev’s increases to make it a viable option for me.
The story of Hyundai is even more remarkable than I ever imagined. I live in Canada where the Pony was introduced in 1983. It was marketed as an alternative to eastern bloc cars such as Lada and Skoda, low hanging fruit. I honestly believed to this day that it was licensed copy of one of those cars, it was so forgettable. The initial sales predictions for 1984 was 5,000 units, it surpassed 25,000 that year making it one of the best selling cars in the country mainly due to its ultra low cost... It was terrible and terrifying in equal messure. We had one as a yard car that literally had it's door come unhinged while rounding a bend sending the unbelted passenger rolling out on to the pavement in the yard. Fast forward to about a decade ago and I start to make reference to this early memory when I'm talking about the Genesis cars and just how far they have come. In the last five years that brand has consistently met or exceeded the expectations of many so called luxury marques... At half the price, sometimes even less. With models knocking hard on the doors of even the venerable S class or 5 series. All the reviews seem to tell the same story, if you had money would you opt for one of these instead? Or would you spend a fortune to "buy the real thing"? That speaks volumes. And now we find ourselves at this junction. This company including Kia are poised to become the dominating force in automotive manufacturing. 40 years might seem like a long time to some folks but when you consider the established luxury brands (you know who you are) have had an almost 80 year head start... The story is incredible. As a sixteen year old car geek, if you told me the Koreans were going to build world class, stylish cars and do it cheaper. I would have told you, never going to happen. But here we are. PS I too love that the models are entirely different, cause everything looks the same these days. How refreshing!
Here is how it all started. Sir George Turnbull left the ailing British Leyland and went to work for the Koreans where he might as well have arrived from another planet. This may be why the first Hyundai Pony looked like an updated Morris Marina if you squint slightly. Not such a joke now though as the British car industry of that era has long gone and the Koreans are making some very good cars: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cz3zJORvntE.html
I think that was the excel here and i drove one when i was 17, i think it was one of the most fun shitty cars i have driven.. but still better than the new Maverick
The story of Hyundai and its founder is even more remarkable. Its not just automobiles, Hyundai has become an industry leader in so many fields its astonishing what they've accomplishing.

Initially, the Prophecy concept strongly suggested “poor man’s Taycan”. But the Ioniq 6, while still having that silhouette, has fleshed it out into a thing of it’s own. I was surprised that the rear seat headroom wasn’t sacrificed for that sloping greenhouse.
This is the contemporary art. Not the weird stuff in galleries. This is it. Collaborative effort of designers creating an object, that looks exciting today and not boring tomorrow. Johnny's narrative reminded me of that. It's fascinating how many people is involved in art, not knowing. Evaluating car designs every day.
This and the Ioniq 5 look fantastic, and I hope Hyundai reap the rewards from their hard work. However, they're also huge. I was stunned by how big the Ioniq 5 was when I saw it in the metal. Am I the only person wanting similar stuff from Hyundai, but at 7/8 scale?
They had the ioniq 38.3 kwh EV (2016 -2022)which has just stopped production ..Brilliant car and I have one . I suppose they wanted to cater to ghe demand for the over 300 mile range cars but all that's happening is that the cars are bigger. Kia ev6 /ioniq 5 and now the 6 , all far bigger than the original ioniq EV 😞
Well huge is a relative thing. We originally intended to replace my wife's SQ5 with the Ioniq 5. The Audi is about an inch longer and taller, but the same width, so the the Hyundai's footprint is that of medium-sized SUV. I can 'do a Jonny' and sit behind myself (one of the things I've tested in all the cars I've considered buying over the last few years) and there's so much legroom in the back that I can slide the rear seat forward and still have space to spare. And with that rear seat a few inches forward the boot is bigger than my now-departed Audi A6 - that's using a tape measure not the official figures! The 'frunk', although small on my AWD version, is still big enough for the charging cables, tyre inflation kit, and a few other bits and bobs.
Over-all vehicle length is one of the factors in me deciding on the Genesis GV60 at 4.515m it is 165mm (6.5inches) shorter than the EV6 (4.680m). But still longer than the Evoque (4.371m) Nissan Qashqai (4.425m) and Kia Ceed (4.320m). A lot of new EVs are very long for UK roads/parking spaces. I recently measured an EV charging space bay length as 4.81m. I look forward to some more diminutive EV offerings.

Hyundai certainly seem to be confident enough to pave their own way. They deserve to be successful for their recent original and well thought out designs.
Hyundai are smashing the design game at the moment. Would love to see a shooting break or Estate version. Great video as always Jonny, very ASMR during those interior shots.
They do have both hits and misses. Ioniq 5 has been a game changer, love it. The ioniq 6 is a shape that Mercedes, VW and Dutch students have done to infinity and beyond. The front is ugly and from another car while the rest of the car is pretty hot but could be even better with very few changes.
As 'so not a Hyundai guy' that's the most beautiful looking EV out there short of the Porches and Etrons. Lovely. That back end is gorgeous. The 5 looks cool. The 6 is beautiful. I think your take on the Hyundai 'legacy' moving forward with the EVs is spot on.
Someone local to me has the Ioniq 5 and it's just so impressive seeing it amongst all the other drab crossover crap that everyone else seems to have. This thing looks like it will be even more impressive to see in the flesh. Hyundai are killing it at the moment and I'd much rather have one the Ioniq cars than an Elon-mobile.
On first sight, I thought it was a bit overdone and not great looking. After seeing it more and more the design has grown on me though. It seems smaller than I thought it would be though.

Production values on the LBS climb with every release, just brilliant. As for the car, totally agree Hyundai are bossing it. Tesla once looked futuristic, now they look bland compared to this. A CLS Taycan but pure Hyundai. Once I’ve scratched the itch with my current P450 F Type, this is on a very short list of My first EV.

It's a good thing I couldn't order one, because this is exactly what they needed to produce next - an efficient and practical car instead of an SUV. Thanks for the walkaround, made me more anxious to get my hands on one! Cheers!
Great review Jonny. I have an Ionic 5 which I love and this shows Hyundai are still at the very top of their game. Look forward to seeing one on the road.
I absolutely love what Hyundai is doing with EV's! Both Ioniq's feel like my dream cars in terms of design and function. It kills me that we don't have Hyundai as an option in our company car brands. That means that I'm going to have to settle for something that doesn't appeal to me nearly as much as these beauties.
I really like this, and I've been waiting for carmakers to actually focus on making aerodynamic, efficient cars. I'm a bit over SUVs and aggressive, wedge shapes cars so this design is really refreshing. Interesting use of materials as well - I feel that manufacturers aren't brave enough with interiors these days, especially with colours and textures. I feel that Citroen are really missing a trick by by not doing an electric DS or CX homage, given the way people in this comments section are responding to this design. I'd love to see how this thing would look with some rear wheel spats.
Yes! I honestly think a futuristic tech laden retro style EV with a low drag coefficient body shape similar to this one would be a winner. Why not merge quirky with science I say! 😉👍🏼
I was on my 1hr plus commute home yesterday and usually I just want to get home so I work the traffic. But then I came up behind an Ionic 5 and all I had was the urge to slow down and sit behind it so I could admire it's incredible design.
Those front lights look very Hyundai Coupe gen 2, quite cool too, not sure on the rear end tho, Hyundai are doing some lovely looking cars tho, very different to the norm, love it.
Hyundai/Kia are actually making me do double takes on the road and walk up to them in carparks. No modern car has peaked my interest like these South Korean EVs have, just from an aesthetical perspective. There was a British Racing Green Sportage in my local Morrisons the other day and I couldn't keep my eyes off it. The Niro MK1 looks great and the upcoming MK2 looks even better. I feel like a car-obsessed kid when I see these things and dare I say it - I rather want one.
I saw my first Ionic 5 the other day, most EVs round here are Stallantis or Renault products with the odd Tesla. None stand out at all. I don't do car spotting, hate the oversized blob shaped crossover shape of most cars, but the Ionic 5 just stood out and made me want one. Still above my budget, my first EV will probably be the new Renault 5 in 2024, I have my name down at the local Renault dealer for one when the order books open up.
Brilliant, thanks Jonny. Must say I wasn't too sure when seeing the test mules and the iffy press of it going back to the drawing board. Gotta say it looks way better than I thought it would. Looks like Hyundai have another winner on the cards and Tesla has probably just done a shart...😄
Absolutely love what Hyundai have done with this, these bold stand out designs only prove they aren’t afraid to step away from the norm. Can only make one more excited about what the future holds. Brilliant review as usual Johnny, do love the static walk around and chat.
Love the opening section to the video, so true the comparison with white goods. Hyundai and Kia really are on a role right now, reminds me of some of the creativity of the Japanese manufacturers in the 80s. Not a fan of neons but sure the kids will love them, reminds me of a Mercedes E-Class Uber taxi. Keep it up Jonny, great content and happy to be a patreon
The designers seemed to have started with a strong and purposeful front, then gave it some extra schwung along the sides but finally lost track when they arrived at the back. It's too much a mishmash for me to really appreciate it. The Ionic 5 is on style far more cohesive in comparison and wins by a country mile.
It’s nice to see the concept of ‘design language’ between models taken further than just slapping the same front grille and reserved choices across the range. Love this

I absolutely love how amazingly Hyundai designers have been combining the angry edges of current design trends with smooth bubble like aero features into an honouring of the history of car design. I really hope they get plenty of congratulations for their work. I've been seeing the Staria minivans in Australia and it is one of the few cars that always turns my head. Love the back, love the interior, looking forward to getting more details. Not a fan of the front or side profile, but will get over that. Over all, very impressed with Hyundai when it comes to EVs
I wasn’t convinced by the thumbnail on the video, but by the time I’d finished it, I think it looks stunning. Incorporating a sloping/coupe roofline with various 911 influences in the rear end has worked without making it look like a complete shambles. Something Porsche themselves failed at with the first panamera! Having had an Ioniq 5 now for 8 months and covering 15k miles, I’m excited to see one of these in the wild and have a go in one - never thought I’d say that about a Hyundai!
The design reminds me of the original Citroen DS that was made from mid 50s till mid 70s I think. I do like it. It’s unique, the design serves the cx, but it also does look great actually.
I prefer the EV6 looks, however the design, engineering and innovative approach from Kia / Hyundai stable has to be applauded. I would rather have a car with a design worth talking about even if I don’t like it, than another dull ‘Russian doll’ clone offered by VAG..

Having been the owner of a Hyundai Matrix for almost 20 years, I'm probably biased, but this car is brilliant. Definitely elements of the 911 in the rear view so much so that a non car aficionado would mistake it for one. That side view (especially at the rear quarter) has, as said, a striking resemblance to the first CLS. The front some Citroën DS, perhaps? The overall droopy tail, no grill, bulbous flanks shape harks back to the 2nd gen Elantra of the mid 90s that to me was a rip off of the EG Civic. Love this thing. But then I'm biased.
i think they are making some very interesting cars and moving the design ethos and customer expectation along in a way no other mass market makers seems to be
Looks really nice (although when I opened the video I didn't like it, but it grew on me fast) first thing that caught my eye in the interior is the physical climate control buttons, I really appreciate physical controls. Touch screen menus for climate control don't do it for me.
I’m most excited for the ionic 3. Pretty sure I’ll order one if it lives up to expectations. The 5 is the best car I’ve driven but is 10-20% too large for our needs. Scale it down with the same design language and open cabin an they have my money 💰
I thought there was only 3 EVs planned, Crossover 5, Car 6 and SUV 8. I've never seen or read anything about a smaller option. Is it a European/Korean only vehicle? Where did you learn of said 3?
@@techpappee Hyundai has begun construction of a new factory in Singapore which, according to the media pack, is to build smaller EVs for Hyundai/Kia group. New platform related to egmp rumoured but nothing confirmed about that.
Hyundai is been a sleeper carmaker for years. My 1st one was a Elantra SE. There was something different about the car’s suspension felt different than a FWD platform. It didn’t lean much nor did it dive under heavy braking. Turns out that Hyundai poached some suspension experts from BMW to help with the cars set up. There were other things that I loved about it too. The car’s interior wear resistance was impressive. And, the car really could take a beating. It outlasted other things I drove. The VW Jetta, the Chevy Malibu, the Ford Fusion, all took second seat to this car. Now, about the Ioniq 6. It is a car not only a car with a sophisticated design and smartly executed interior interface, but also an industry game changer. This status is akin to the Apple iPhone. Notwithstanding its deserved praise, the Ioniq 6’s looks don’t seem to be all that. Certainly, it could not have been like the concept car in which it is based, but it could have retained more. The front lights design, for example, leaves a lot to be desired. Ditto panel gaps. But the interior is butter, but seem a bit restrained as well. Likely, this was to preserve sales of Genesis sedans. When the dust clears, one has a winner of a car.
What a weird one.. Combining some retro design with 2005 and then sloping the roof like a Mercedes CLA, hmmm.. Not classically good looking, but definitely interesting 😊

"...they jumped at it..." I'll say! Their designs and "vehicle to load" feature are seriously making me think about trading in the 'ol Model 3. That 3rd brake light / whale tail is a great idea. Just think about some giant dump truck or tractor trailer that's right behind you. Those extra LED's on top could mean the difference between you making it home from wherever versus someone picking bits of your trunk out of their bumper. Anyhoo, thanks Jonny!
At first look I was not sure, but the more I look the more I like it. Great review as always Johnny I don't know how you make a static walk around interesting but you did!
Absolutely great design of a saloon in the league of Porsche and Mercedes EQE and EQS. This is the metamorphosis of an already great brand for serious and reliable cars and this what we waited for in electromobility and not the same old boring cars with just another engine. Last but not least a great presentation in a cool location. 😎
Wow Hyundai has some impressive designs now. Very nice. The rear end blew me away. LOVE the lights, and the egg shape styling inside and out. And the fact they use a lot of recycled materials! I think by now the automakers must realize EVs are much easier to manufacture, engine wise. Developing an EV drive train is much less work than designing a whole new ICE. OR, the freed up resources are added to the design budget....
Really interesting stuff coming out of Hyundai lately. You can tell this will be a calm and quiet place to be, the sound deadening was so neutral just with Jonny's voice. I do think it would have looked even better if the lines of the rear side panels flicked up to meet the duck tail rather than sloping off, a little less well used bar of soap but that seems to be the aero trend currently.
The back end instantly made me think of an old Marcos GT. It’s a strange looking thing though, I’m not sure I’m 100% on it though just yet. I think the rear 3/4 droops down just a little bit too much
Both Hyundai and Kia are brands I'd never consider 10 years ago. That has totally changed. However I personally don't like the design of this one even though I'm sure it's a great car from a technical point of view. But this one is odd looking and I can't get over it.
This Ioniq 6 seems like the perfect blend of form and function. I'm glad they've ditched the white frame on the display. The Ioniq 5 seemed a little too form over function for me; great vehicle but the boot a little too shallow for my liking.
Love the Ioniq 5. And I would call this a bold design as well, but not sure I like the Hyundai Coupe/Tiburon (GK) front. Not exactly a design I've been longing for.
