The Hyundai Kona Electric was one of the mass-market electric cars which had a decent range. It really impressed us when it first launched in 2019, but now Hyundai has updated it with new styling and tech.
However, since the Kona first arrived, a whole swathe of electric cars have arrived and one of those is the Mazda MX-30.
So, which small affordable electric SUV is best? Here Nicki and Tom fight it out.
Thanks for joining us on our journey to 'Clear the Air' around hybrid and electric cars, we have new videos arriving every week (a mix of studio explainers and road tests) so please subscribe to the channel to find out more!

I took the Mazda for a test drive last week and LOVED it - fine handling, brisk off the mark, refined and plush inside but I can't get past the woeful range and those silly, silly doors. If they could only morph it into a proper, grown up vehicle with a 250 mile plus range, I would buy one tomorrow. No hesitation.

I ended up signing a purchase agreement for a MX-30. The range suits my family's needs. Wonderful interior and ergonomics. Great handling. I have chosen cars through the years mostly by heart, and I have never regretted that approach.

Well if range was everything they would be right... BUT The Mazda is your very own private and quiet zen zone. Cool, fun and incredibly relaxing to drive. Safe. Handling is top notch. Fantastic seats. Great lights. Standard stereo surprisingly good. Summer range in real life 140 miles. Disclaimer: Still in love with my Mazda.

As long, as you don't go on any longer trips. That Mazda charges abysmally slow. It has a smaller range and about the same charging speed as my Skoda Citigo, only I'm paying 55€ a month for the Citigo.

@@wermagst well thats what I thought too 9 months ago. But for a salesman living on the autobahn it wont work. The average Tesla owner does 20000 km per year. We ve done more than that with our Mazda in 9 months. Yes we do have a longer range EV. Or so my girl friend tells me🤣🤣🤣

Having driven both cars this week (along with a couple of others), I was clear in my decision to buy the MX-30, which I'll gleefully take delivery of in September. To be fair, range was of no concern to me so the smaller battery wasn't a negative (which I understand it will be for some). My final decision came down to which car excited me the most and had the interior where I wanted to spend my time. The Kona has one of the worst interiors I've seen recently (beaten only by the utterly horrific plastic Nissan Leaf). Ultimately, the Mazda was the right fit for me and the perks outweighed the concerns. I fully recommend people who are interested to go and get your hands on one and feel exactly what each manufacturer is offering, that made my final decision a very easy one indeed.

Great review and it is a mystery why Mazda didn't trim more weight off that chassis and close off the grill area for a better range. I'm also thinking they didn't have enough room for batteries in that chassis for a better range also, or adding more batteries didn't offer the return in range versus cost. Maybe when they make a dedicated EV chassis they can really put their light weight engineering to work. As for the two, I rarely use up the ~70 km electric range in my Volt, and the Mazda is a much better looking car than the Kona to me so that's the route I'd go, since its range is more than good enough for my daily needs.
@billyjean2905

The reason is quite simple. Japanese automotive industry is literally not prepared to make EV. They have been king of the affordable, reliable ICE vehicle for a long time, so it's not easy to shift their focus into EV.

They’re going to add a rotary engine to this model to create a plug in hybrid. When that happens, if they stay with the 100 mile electric only range, that’ll be impressive !

I was talking to a Mazda dealer about EVs, probably 2 years ago, there was a definite feeling that Mazda wanted to steer clear of EVs and explore other avenues of reduced emissions vehicles. This vehicle seems to be the product of that attitude. Maybe they felt they had to put something on the market but not put too much effort into what they were delivering.

I’ve had a 64 kWh version of the Kona since they were first launched in 2018 and it’s been a fabulous car - so goes without saying I agree with conclusion! Not the most stylish car on the road or the best handling, but as a BEV I think it’s still hard to beat. 45k miles so far and do plenty of 200-300 mile trips up to Scotland and it’s never put a foot wrong. One of key qualities of the Hyundais in general and the Kona in particular is it’s efficiency. When running these tests it’d be really useful to mention the efficiency you achieved on test in exactly the same way you’d report the mpg for an ICE car.

I'm the owner of a 2023 Mazda MX-30 GS as my first EV because I like the look & finish and the way it handles. Price wise, it's pretty good as Mazda offers a 4000$ rebate and another 12000$ in rebates from the federal & provincial governments (Quebec, Canada). I have to say I use it as a second vehicle to do all my shopping/groceries/meetings etc... all within 40 km from my house and I won't use it during winter time (October 31 to may 01). I understand the range is said to be 160 km but I've done more than 180 km on rural roads & city roads and it was showing15% left! But if you're looking for a primary vehicle for all year around, you should consider an EV with a 360 km minimum range knowing that in winter time when it's really cold (-20c +), you'll be using "heating/heated seats/heated streering etc..." which will have a negative impact on the range (minus 40% +) and it will take longer to charge. 😊 Average 15.9 kwh but I keep my speed within 15 km/h of speed limit. 😊

Not a very fair test, the MX-30 would be better compared to the smaller cars, but if still choose it over the Hyundai. the other comparison video with the FIAT 500 was a better test. The other car I would choose in this class is the Citroen eC4 because it's quirk quirky but good looking, similar range to these cars.

We love our Kona 64kwh, Ultimate facelift version, we chose this due to its Range Capability on a Home Charge, personally I’m struggling to understand why when buying an SUV that’s basically a shopping trolley, you would choose style over substance, ok if 100 miles suits your needs, happy to sit at a charger whilst buying premium electricity and looking at your slightly better looking car floats your boat enjoy, however we drive across Wales, drive around the N Wales coast for 2-3 days and we’ve never even thought about looking for a charger, 200+ miles ( current range 300-340 miles / 4.8 / 5.4 miles/ kw) we in our humble opinion think it’s an awesome thing, that in reality listening to most reviewers marmite opinions you may never buy, thankfully for Hyundai there’s a lot of buyers who’ve looked past it’s quirky looks

Question Does anyone know on the kona when you press the rejection paddle and the car comes to a stop. DO THE BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON .
@corthitchens7161
@corthitchens7161 2 года назад
I can speak only for the MX30 US base model - the brake light comes on briefly when you are in maximum regeneration mode and let off the pedal. It takes maybe 1 or 2 seconds after you release the pedal, and then the brake lights turn on for a second or two, then off. I really wish the brake lights came on sooner and stayed on longer. I am an MX30 owner and the car is wonderful. Short range is not an issue for us in California with charging stations everywhere. Interior is luxurious, and the cabin is quiet and noise is comparable to our Lexus.

It’s apparent that Mazda is not interested in selling or building electric vehicles, a little bit like Toyota and their self charging cars! I still think both have to small batteries, 200 miles in winter I prefer, 155 is what I have today and it’s enough for 90% of our driving and I only charged it outside our wallbox 3 times in a year. At home we have got solar panels so it’s sort of free. Last time I tried to charge it outside one was broken and one occupied so had to find another charger. I badly want a Tesla because of charging infrastructure but can’t afford one.

The interior though, oh Hyundai really need to start adding some colour or fabrics to the inside of their cars to brightenen then up, especially with such decent kit available. However for me the Mazda just pips it to the finish line, only cause I can manage with the lower range (as it wud be my second car) I have now seem a few of them in the metal inside and out and they are just really impressive. The build quality is really impressive too.

@stephenhall3515

Japanese industry does not see EVs as being much more than a one generation phenomenon until hydrogen (fuel cells or neat) replaces fossil fuels. The biggest clue to this is Toyota's advanced research into better batteries now being scaled down after many years while hydrogen research has diversified and research link spending (mainly with universities worldwide) suggests a new stage having been reached. This phase is most likely hydrogen as the main fuel being rolled out over a range of machines and utilities from about 2030. With regard to vehicles the increasing refinement of hybrids (including biofuels for the ICE component) allows for retrofitting while hydrogen fuel cells to battery vehicles suggests start/stop purposes. Heavy trucks, trains and buses as well as general heavy machinery will use liquefied hydrogen direct. This is common on huge construction sites in Asia and new power options for maritime use.

So much bias to Hyundai. You call this a balanced and well informed verdict? They haven't mentioned why Mazda INTENTIONALLY chose to go with the small battery - its less damaging to the environment than using larger battery. Also if the average European's commute is about 30 miles, why would this range thing be such a big deal? Mazda looks a lot better inside and out, unlike the Kia which looks like two cars that got compressed together at a scrap heap.

The Mazda is a compliance car, no other way to look at it. You would have to seriously be into the looks or carry a whole many years of brand loyalty to choose that over other EVs on the market. It just doesn't compete at all with other cars on the market. Looking at the battery size, speed of charging etc, it has the kind of electrical specs that would have been 'meh', no more than average, 6 years ago. Now?, well it is not even competitive. I live in Yorkshire, and could not get this car to Birmingham in the winter on a full charge. That's unusable. I know it is aimed as a second car at people who never drive further than the edge of town, but still, if that was my usage profile, I would still choose something that is more compelling as an EV. This feels like a half hearted sop to the market.

Mx 30 is not even a viable ev option Battery means everything,how could they just produced a car that has no range in 2021,whoever approved this should be fired. Range is so important that everything else feels like add ons,and mazda has no range Mazda has produced something like a small gorgues leather shoe,yes ,it is better built compared to a regular shoe however ,you can’t fit in so it doesnt matter if it is a quality product or not,and we don’t buy a shoe to look at home,we are buying it to wear.so we shouldn’t buy this shitty product and adapt our lifestyle for that pityful range,mazda should adapt themselves to 2021 standarts. doesnt matter how it rides or the interior etc,it is just broken in it’s core.

@@Luis-xr9ye I'm not James, but I noticed some small errors myself even though I don't agree with his conclusion on the quality of the video. I'm 99% sure the screen in the Mazda is not touchscreen, since it's pretty much the same infotainment as the Mazda 3. Also, I am sure the regenerative breaking does not put it to a stop, it'll slow down but keeps creeping. If you hold the paddles it will stop however. I personally currently leasing a Kia E-Niro from 2019 but I'm also a Mazda fan, my top 3 choice back then was The 64kwh Kona, e-Niro and a Mazda 3. Pretty disappointed by this MX30, the the doors, range and weak charging capabilities would be dealbreakers for me. I however find the interiour of the Mazda way superiour to the Kona, way better infotainment, better quality materials. I also don't like the middle console of the Hyundai since I have very long legs and they curve towards the driver. Not an issue if you are not a tall dutchman though. Anyway the low quality interiour and the middle console made me decide to go for the Kia over the Hyundai and the lease price over a Mazda 3.

The MX30 upper screen is not a touch screen, it is controlled by a knob by the shifter. I don’t think they mentioned that the Mazda regeneration brings the car to a complete stop, but to clarify, it does not. The car will slow to the speed of a regular vehicle when you take your foot off of the brake in drive. It does have a hold function to hold the car in place once you have completely come to a stop, but you need to use the brake pedal to stop the car completely before the hold function will engage.

I'd prefer the Mazda but both of these cars are shockingly over-priced. Its been 10 years now and EVs are an awful price. I know what's going on here - automakers are keeping the price high because they don't want to stop selling you the fossil-fuel stuff. I suspect that whenever I do buy a car again some of these auto companies will be gone. So I am happy to say I am voting with my feet and am buying an eBike. At end of the day they are both pointless SUVs, a car type designed in hell for people who deserve to be in hell. If you want a car that size fundamentally you have chosen the equivalent of a tall Ford Focus - how completely unnecessary, what will happen when nearly everyone has car which are jacked up to be a bit taller, do car makers come out with even taller models and so on until such time as the cars fall over when rounding a corner? And the luggage space is pathetic if it is supposed to be a family car
@corthitchens7161
@corthitchens7161 2 года назад
To your (incorrect) point, these cars are easier for people with knee and back pain issues to get in and out of than lower cars. Not everyone can comfortably get into or out of a standard sedan height vehicle.

@@corthitchens7161 Speaking as someone who has 1 completely shot knee and the other one is not great (courtesy of playing a lot of rugby up until my 20s) I have no issues getting in or out of my normal family car. My parent who are both in their 80s and not the most flexible have no issues either getting into my normal family car. However, if the choice was between the Kona and something like the Fiat 500 which is just a bit lower than my family car I would agree with you, except that something like the Suzuki Swift which is a similar size to the Fiat and just a bit taller (although not an EV) exist. The simple fact is that these type of SUVs are utterly pointless for the vast majority of people, 90%+ of people who buy them really should be buying something else, and with the paucity of boot space even fail to meet the needs of the market they were designed for, families. The public have been conned by car designers
