The energy stored in 8800uF at 30v is around 4J which is about 10% of what is needed to make a good weld with regular nickel battery strap. Also, notice how many of the "welds" demonstrated are visible only on one side of the probe... this is because the energy is spent in the sparking as the contacts close not by current flowing through the weld.... the current needs to be switched on AFTER a good contact is made! I have no doubt that with some luck and some very thin metal strip this might work a few times, but it could not weld regular nickel battery strap, and the switch will not last 10 minutes.

Roland, "ALL CAPS", replies are hardly a way to start a dignified discussion on any topic... it simply makes you look like some sort of idiot. However, as someone who has been building improvised electronics for many years, I can say that a tool like this... however cheap is a false economy as the welds will be unreliable, and will spoil any later project you build with it, even potentially making stuff dangerous if a strap comes off and shorts out a pack. There are designs, and kits for battery spot welders on Ebay that are excellent, but this is not one of them! In principle, if the design had included a resistor to limit the current when charging the caps... had included quite a lot higher capacitance... ~100,000 uF and used some mechanism to connect the load for a short time when triggered... (foot switch, 555 timer, several mosfets) it would actually be usable.... but it would not make for a video that could be monetized which is really what this is all about!

Using a 100mA push-button switch will burn out almost immediately! The charge current for those capacitors will likely hit 5-10 Amps for a few ms, which will burn the contact in that tiny switch.
@dl4511
@dl4511 6 лет назад
You are correct, he should put a limiting resistor in series with the switch.
@killallfornothing

You can shock some gramps with that kind of spot welder, because it will not weld anything, and this switch...
@stinkycheese804
@stinkycheese804 6 лет назад
No, he should not put a limiting resistor with that switch, he should use one rated for an order of magnitude more current, except the design doesn't need a switch at all, could be continuously charging the capacitors.
@blackgate27
@blackgate27 6 лет назад
or he should use a relay
@killallfornothing
@killallfornothing 6 лет назад
relay is using too much power(there is not much anyway in circuit to spare), power transistor like some from IRF family will be much better, because non mechanical contacts will last much longer and some of them can carry over 200A in impuls! and just few mA to switch. There are also realy cheap and popular so You can find them in many electronic things like cordless drills, power regulators, chargers...

That chinsey little tact switch will not last for very long AND you need at least 4 more of those little 3300uF capacitors, all rated for at least 50V. You need to use that little push button tact switch to trigger a nice heavy duty starter solenoid relay or solid state relay, which gives a QUICK BURST of current from the capacitors to the spot welding electrodes. You also need to have some pretty heavy cables from your capacitors to your welding electrodes. THEN you will have a decent little semi-automatic spot welder.

This can simply work without the doubtful tactile switch & also without such a big transformer & bridge rectifier. Use only a small 20v, 100 mA transformer & one cheap diode 1N4002 - 7 with a 1000 ohm resistor which continuously keep the capacitor bank charged. Make a quick discharge with pressure, preferably between the battery end & the connection strip. Don't worry about any further continuation heavy currents in the joints because of the 1000 ohms resistance. For thicker strips add some more capacitors. Circuit works OK.

Well it works :) I was thinking of something similar but run from a bench supply and using a super cap. The weld terminals need to be replaceable as they will quickly wear as well. And I agree with some others that the switch is too light weight. But for a McGuiver circuit made from scrap components it gets the job done.

@RobynTapps
@RobynTapps 6 лет назад
Yea you should have used a larger switch or a MOSFET to limmit the current going to said switch.. You could have also cut those contacts inside your probe to A) avoid shock and B) prevent arcing inside. Also you should have used 63V caps with that 30V transformer. 35V caps are cutting it close.

Wait a minute. If you are using a 30V transformer, the peak output voltage will be 42.4 volts. You're using 35V rated caps. They aren't going to last long being exposed to 42 volts. Your meter reads 30V but meters read RMS voltage, not peak voltage. You need to either use a lower voltage transformer or higher rated caps.

Great video! I would like to know how many Amps is the transformer and how many Amps is the diode bridge? Thanks.
6 лет назад
The boy made out of scrap parts a device (which is not true welder). The transformer gives 30VAC probably somewhere around 250mA (judging by size of the transformer), rectifier bridge converts voltage in 42VDC, through small push button the capacitors are charged, now the moment of truth -- the boy shorts capacitors through conductive strip (rush current created by discharge of capacitors heats up the strip -- no switch involved at this moment). The idea is great for 'budget' device but I would recommend to include 24V light bulb between rectifier bridge and capacitors and increase gauge of the wires for welding current. Ideally it would require some form of timer for welding pulse (555 timer monostable mode) and MOSFETs in parallel to conduct high weld current (no sparks). Of course it require to increase capacity bank at least 3 times to provide enough energy for discharge.

You forgot to introduce the "bridge rectifier diode" which convert AC to DC, it's the black rectangular IC
@scottfrazer8376
@scottfrazer8376 2 года назад
Doesn't really matter, because a FULL WAVE BRIDGE always cuts current in HALF. Better to just use a single diode (quarter wave rectifier) on each secondary wire feeding those capacitors. Then you get the FULL TRANSFORMER CURRENT, which will charge the capacitors much faster. Full wave bridge is only effective in this scenario IF the full wave bridge is rated for at least TWICE the current of the transformer secondary. Otherwise, it just takes too long to recharge the capacitor bank AND the rectifier heats up too quickly.
