Excellent Job done. Love to see that. I use to spend hours having a go at making that sort of thing, but arthritis now holds me back. I never threw things away that I could make something useful out of.

Sorry for your arthritis. I know people having that and they take medication, and it works. My guitar teacher suffered about this. Thanks for your comment, glad you like it.

Thank's for the speedy reply Alexander. Yep I take my prescribed medication but it do'es not make my joints any better, just dulls the pain. At nearly 72 it dulls my head as well. You will understand why the powers that be advise not operate machinery when taking pain killing medication. I still enjoy my electronics and Ham radio as a hobby. All the best from John -G0WXU.

I sympathize with what you say. One of the most important things is the love of things, the interest we have for others and what surrounds us. Electronic, radio, hand made, the magic of tricks, and when it's works. RU-vid became a source of nice share and it's nice to meet us about made. Thanks and keep your enthousiasm!

Chatting is sometime usefull, and sometimes worthless. But lot's of people doesn't like silence and only tool's noise. Anyway, all is clear in this video, and there is an explicative video for the schematic in the video. And one thousand people complaining wich it's not a full tutorial video. I feel posting video on YT is very exhausting. Thanks for your comment, have a great day.

@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 7 лет назад
Hello, sir, your opinion is useless and inappropriate. You intend to do this, build is not for the engineers, and if you were a high technician or one of them, you would not say what you say. Yes, you are right, there is a foucault current by the screw on the metal core. But your knowledge is to to much simple. These transformers have a high idle current. Their core is welded, providing a high idle current, consuming a high current in idle (no load) mode. These features of the transformer give high power for a smaller size, increasing the high saturated offset of the core and interacting with the primary coil with more power linearity. This is a "over saturated core". If this principle were not affected, the microwave oven would be heavier. A 2KW microwave transformer would weigh 6 kilograms. If these screws made a loss, it will be a ridiculous loss in front of all the magentic field resulting of the high offset saturated core. And now, read this: The E and I of this transformer are welded by the extreme points. It avoids the foucault current because the center of the transformer (the center of the E) is not welded to the center of the I. The screws are at the back of the E. Significantly, these screws make electrical contact between certain points and electrical, they have made a point between the SAMES POTENTIALS POINTS. The error would be to place the screw at the center of the E, in the middle of the I. So the current foucault of which you are afraid does not exist. the main loss of this made are in the low section wire cable, the lead free solder in the terminal connexion, and the joule effect on the screws terminals. But strangely, you noticed no one of this. If you have something to teach us about transformer, tell me. Thanks

Get WelA wartime novel created around three families. The Bowmans lived in Marlborough, while the Flemings and Thorntons lived in Canterbury. Teenager Lydia Bowman became aware of their old recluse neighbour, Henry Starr, who daily passed her home carrying a bunch of flowers and he always headed to the Ferry Bridge. What was the story behind his regular trek? Despite several warnings from her family not to get involved, Lydia finally got an opportunity to enter and search Henry's shack. Her reward was finding Henry's diary, which she smuggled out and told no-one about it. The Thornton family had two sons, both of whom were vying for the love and affection of Wanda Fleming. David was enlisted for war service without his knowledge. Adam remained with his parents, but full of jealousy and hatred against his family. Their respective lives, ordeals and tragedies are well described throughout the book. The story has several emotional elements within the families, but all are inter-twined and eventually reveal the mystery of "The Man with the Flowers". A wartime novel created around three families. Best build I have seen yet, compact efficient and with customizable power. I cringed when you were hammering the coil at the beginning there... that's how I killed the good coil on my transformer, by hitting multiple times on the wrong spot, thus breaking the wire. Couldn't find a spare broken microwave since then, so no spot welder for me :(
@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 6 лет назад
You can use normal transformer, with separate coil, as a Micro wave oven. The fact with micro wave transformer is than they have very high idle, equalising a more weight heavy transformer. So, you can use 400W ballast from high or low pressure bulb. But a more power is not ok cause it create a short circuit, unless if you add wires on the primary (if there is place you can). So wait a little bit, you will find a new transformer, and be carrefull this time! thanks for your comment.

Thank you for the video. I was familiar with how to build this but it is always nice to see individual designs and use of materials on hand. One thing that seems to be missing from the video is a practical application, for example the reason why you built it.
@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 7 лет назад
yes it would have been a nice thing to juxtapose the pratical use and the reason why I maked this. But this reason is passed, and this build is to prevent another case. The reason, wich not specified was to repair a dimmer fan on a Mercedes car. This dimmer was a simple power resistor, wich contain a blown thermofuse, soldered by point. This fuse was not solderable by tin, cause it destruct it immediately. Only quick soldering point was possible. Because I had short time, I used 12V battery and pin punch to weld it. It was dangerous and umcomfortable. After returning the car in time, I decided to build the real device for this kind of task. Now you know! Thanks for your comment.

@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 6 лет назад
That is... As I explained it further, there are 3 volts at these terminals. 3 volts, applied to fingers, delivered not more some microamps, and there is no danger to use it. Because you need to have volts to have amps trough the fingers for to see it becoming dangerous. For to have some danger, you need to be present on 100 volts. All voltage under this value is not dangerous, or not dangerous at all. Amps are not the value you need to consider, first you need to consider voltage, and calculating current providing from it trough a load, in this case the resistace of your finger. Of course, you need to consider the internal equivalent resistance from the generator, because if she's high, you will loose lot's of voltage when touching it, decreasing voltage , and cause decreased current, so low risk. Thanks for your comment.

Make your laces is more difficult than make this spot welder. The only difference is you make your laces in few secondes, but you need 5 hours to make this spot welder. The most difficult thing is to find all the components. This way is easy for me because I am a process engineer. I think you would try to make this spot welder, it will give you more confiance on you. Have a great day.

A tip for soldering the cable terminal without drilling a hole. First, warm the exposed conductor strands and apply flux. Put cable terminal in vise with eyelet down. Insert cable into terminal to estimate how much free space is left. Remove cable, apply flux and heat cable terminal until solder melts. Fill to an amount equal to how much free space you saw. If the terminal is the correct size for the wire, 40-50% full is about right. if it's 'what you had', and is too big, it may need 75% full of molten solder. Make sure the terminal is hot enough to keep the solder molten after you slowly plunge the cable end into the terminal. Wear some safety goggles and insert the cable slowly. If you don't get it all the way in the first time, (the first one I did at age 13, I was so scare I got about 25% insertion!), reheat and do it again. Also, using adhesive lined shrink tube is bette, it is thicker plastic, and the adhesive helps resist moisture and corrosion. Nerd info: last time I did a battery cable end, I researched soldered vs crimped terminal ends on battery cables. To my surprise, a crimped terminal end provides better conductivity. Why? Crimped with enough pressure, the wire strands and terminal friction WELD the metals together. Welding vs soldering. GeoD

You built a very useful tool. I love homemade tools that work well. This is an excellent example of how a diy spot welder should function. I'll make my jaws a little longer, and perhaps make the height on the upper jaw adjustable for even contact on "fatter" work pieces, but other than that, its perfect imo. Is there anything that can not be made from an old microwave? LOL Great job!

Je fais aussi un peu de cinéma, d'écriture et de guitare. Je ne sais pas réellement si je suis quelqu'un qui s'occupe ou si je suis quelqu'un qui a peur de s'ennuyer. Merci pour votre commentaire.

Excellent work, however I would recommend that you do not drill into the transformer laminations because they should remain insulated from each other. In this application with low duty cycle and the fact that you shorted only a few laminations it won't hurt anything, yet anyone else should find a different technique to mount to the transformer. You did superb work, I really am impressed. Thanks for the great video.

Cela me rappelle un dispositif similaire sur "Made in Poland", mais celui-ci a de beaux ensembles de bois aussi. Je dois sortir un vieux four à micro-ondes. I've never seen a thread cut on copper before... that's beautiful (but I am in love with copper)
@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 6 лет назад

I hope you have RCD protection on the supply, because you're only a thin layer of varnish away from electrocuting yourself on the primary coil. An insulated enclosure would make this much safer.
@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 7 лет назад
hello, yes you're absolutely right. Anyway, the thin layer of varnish is in perfect condition. And the output copper cable (wich made the secondary) is a very high quality souple, ingnifuged coated wire. All these components, in very good condition, make the whole very safe. But yes, of course, there is a " RDC protection" beyond the system. Thanks for watching and thanks for your device, thanks for your comment.

This is so cool. I learned alot by watching this video - a few minor things about soldering, recycling, voltage acceptances and the human body etc. It caused me to look up a few things and bulk up on some fundamental knowledge. This video didn't have some self indulgent wannabe youtube star droning on and on about the way they came up with the new funnel they invented. Nope just straight manufacturing for the quick mind. if you didn't get all of it, look some of it up like i did, he doesn't need to waste time explaining basic things we should know or could learn elsewhere. Loved it sir, and can't wait to see more from you. One question, I have access to HID lighting ballasts. 1500 watt ballasts for boosting voltage to 480v while dropping amperage to 9 amp... I think this will serve the same purpose with minor tweaking for the base of mine? btw - loved that you used a large sander for the hard edges on the wood and actually included it in the video. Awesome!
@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 7 лет назад
Hi sir. For your question, your ballast is used to reduce current when the HID is glowing. So, for you can use it, you need to add more turns to the primary of the transformer (the ballast). I sincerely recomand to you to use a simple micro wave transformer. It's not worth to modify a ballast for use it like a spot welder. If you connect the coil of your ballast, it wil make a short circuit, cause lot's of current going trough it. Anyway, you can use 250 watts ballast for it, but not 1500 watts ballast (only if you add wire on the primary coil). Thanks for your comment, have a nice day.

A great design and really beautifully built. Great work! I noticed that the electrode seemed to be becoming poorly conductive fairly quickly. Could that just be filed back to get a fresh surface? Thanks so much for sharing!
@AIexanderHartdegen
@AIexanderHartdegen 7 лет назад
Yes it's easy to filed it to have a fresh surface, but you can just clean it with "special electric contact" bomb. You can filed it without damage it, anyway electrodes are easily changeable, filed, or cleaned. The most quick way is to use fine sand paper. Thank for your comment :)
