Making sure cuttings have rooted enough instead of just throwing them in a pot right away is something I didn't know when starting out last year. It made some plants grow very slowly because they took so much longer to root in soil and could not focus on foliage. 3 months ago, I took my first Philodendron Splendid cutting and put it in moss in a pot.. It developed like crazy, while it was rooting poorly in my open moss pole (no plastic back). Also started wrapping nodes when I saw you do it, so thanks for both great tips!
How often do you water your plants in spaghnum? Do you keep them in icu for 3 months because I just got imports and took them out of my "ICU" box after I saw new growth but now I'm wondering if I did something wrong. I also used a mix of coco coir sphagnum and perlite.
Watering will depend on your environment and how quickly the moss dries out. You want the moss to be consistently moist. I am still keeping my Warocq in the ICU box after I repotted because I haven’t acclimated it to the humidity levels outside of the ICU box yet. Since I only replanted, I’m maintaining the higher humidity levels still.
What a genius idea that your friend is 3D printing pots!! 😇Finding a decent fitting (and nice looking) pot can be tricky plus they can be expensive too!
Your enthusiasm for plants is so infectious 🫶🥰🌿. I love your uploads, you are so inspiring and very funny😂. So happy your plant baby is thriving 🙌. Nice idea about the ICU box☺️
OMG, don't ever feel bad about procrastinating, and don't tell anyone this, but I still have my oldest (living) plant, a heart leaf philo in the original 4" pot with half the original soil from 2009! It survived gross neglect until I finally 'learned how to care' in '2022/23', then she exploded with growth. Then in '23 probably didn't water & definitely mites, she lost all but 1 leaf. She's been coming back with lots of new 2ndary growth spurts (so glad I didn't chop off her vines). I washed her long vines and leaves yesterday. The poor thing is so heavy that gravity is pulling her out and over the edge!! Maybe I'll take inspiration from you and repot her today. /// So, I went to my office to do it! - got side tracked by my brand new Alo. African Mask total meltdown, back hurt, got tired & quit! Then saw your vid still on my screen & your note, so there could be no further slacking off! And Yay - I did it, woo-hoo! LOL! Funny my back doesn't hurt anymore :) I did however rip off 1 vine, but have it in water >>> all thanks to your awesome channel and kindness in responding to your viewers. Many thanks to you for your humour and encouragement to everyone.
You just said dunk-in in water, and I’m coming to say that LOL. I would soak it in water and drenched moss is a lot easier to handle. She is gorgeous ❤❤
Oh the Queen Anthurium is my favorite of all plants! I have bought 3 in 2 months! I am obsessed with them. The leaves are so beautiful and I cannot get enough of them. Best of luck with yours. Mine love getting spritz with water every day too.
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow I had the most devastating plant mail experience my first Queen had 2 leaves I ordered from LealPlants. The shortest was 9 inches the longest 12 inches! GORGEOUS plant, but when it arrived the longest leaf was snapped off 😭. To this day I cannot get over it.
Is it actually cheaper to import? In Canada we pay ridiculous shipping, so i imagine it works out to he the same. Say i see wishlist Anthurium $20, but shipping was $50. Thats $70. 😔
Oh my!!! So the way I did it was the plant was imported to a seller in the US who subsequently shipped it to me. It went through a middle man essentially.
Yea, same middleman process here. Middle man wants $50 to ship to me. Booo but to be fair they are out of province (different State) so i guess that bumps the cost. Oh well 😅
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow you should definitely do that! Because I'd honestly prefer to buy from a small woman owned business 💅🏻 I've seen other content creators using it, I bet you'd have a solid client base in no time
I’m so glad to hear the import success story! I’m so nervous of having a plant travel for so long to the UK but I may give it a try now.. You are also so right about cover pots! I can never find one for my taller clear nursery pots - I’ve taken to looking at vases, salad bowls etc. in shops thinking, would this work as a cover pot? 😂
5:41 my GF wants to know where you got this outfit. I want to know about the rug 😂 I need that rug Edit: I can’t believe they gave the rug a hole like the real thing. I definitely need this now. ❤
Good question. Many of these won’t get tooooo big. I can acclimate them slowly by decreasing the humidity over time. But my plan is to keep them in this greenhouse long term
We have a double sink in the primary bathroom, but we actually end up using only one of them so this sink usually just ends up being the plant sink 🤣. I’ve also used my kitchen sink, however, to shampoo plants in the past. As long as the sink is clean (and all the products I use are plant-based, scent free due to having young kids), I’m not worried about having plants in there.
I could grow it in moss long term, but I personally am not good at moss upkeep. Moss requires consistent moisture and while in nearly 100% humidity, it didn’t need to be watered too frequently, once I acclimate to my regular cabinet, I would need to water it every few days and that’s TOOOOO much for me 🫠
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow I only know to do it from growing phalaenopsis orchids. So many people hate sphagnum but I think it's great. And goes into the compost once it's no longer viable.
It’s a similar process to acclimating tissue cultures which is another video I’m working on. You slowly expose it to lower humidity over the course of several weeks.
Dude. Why does that plant look so bloody underwhelming 😂 I'm crying. you're so cute when you play with new toys. Also where do you get your energy from boo.
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow fine fine, I trust ya. I'm like you, I walk past a plant, and I HAVE to fix it. No matter the time 😂 the other day it was 1am so I wore a head light and repotted it in the dark outside. I slept GOOD after that 😂
Thanks for the ICU idea....congrats on the rehab and those roots are proper crazy!!!!! Also, I might look into the 3D printing too cos cover pots can get expensive! As for removing moss, I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOVE that its the most mindless activity on the planet and gives my brain a rest from my draining world as I care for my daughter who has autism and my elderly mum. So mindless moss removal is my path to sanity....well one of them😆
I need to send you all my moss plants for your removal services!!! 🫶 I totally get the appreciation for mindless tasks after being busy all the time. For me it’s dishes 😆
"And like any sane tampon parent, I'm taking a moment to play with my new tampon." Husband walks in, "Honey, what are you doing?" Freezes and says, "playing with my tampons." 😂😂😂
WOW! A queen anthurium 😮congratulations! 😊 I just came home from the dollar store with a more rectangular pot for my gloriosum dark form. Recently got into Hoya and my “supplier” is helping me import a Tengchongensis and she will acclimate it for me!! 😅
So pretty! I laugh every time you break out your favorite watering can cuz I hate it so much! It’s so cute but the stupid tiny hole to add water infuriates me 🤣🤣
Hi! I treat Alocasia and anthurium the same so I use the same self-watering set-up I showed here in the tree fern mix from my friend’s small business: bit.ly/RPBpots (“MICHELLE10” will get you 10% off her custom pots and aroid mix). If you want to make your own substrate, you can make your own using these ingredients too: www.amazon.com/shop/ohtheplacesyoullgrow/list/1YSY6GDHDNJF2?ref_=aipsflist_aipsfohtheplacesyoullgrow
I know it’s in your business and not your content type…but as a fellow 100-ish plant mom with a 1 and a 4 year old AND a 3 day business trip coming up…I’d love to know how you plan and execute prep for those trips with the human and plant kiddos.
I deeply water all my plants before I leave, cancel all kids’ after school activities while I’m away, and coordinate carpool for my 5 year old. The kids also usually just get school lunch these days. This way, my husband just needs to worry about breakfast, morning drop off, dinner, and bedtime. He did freak out a bit the first time I went on a business trip, but I learned he will rise to the occasion and the kids are all alive and well 🤣
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow “alive and well”…that’s a bar low enough for my own husband (albeit barely) and perhaps a key to my own sanity, I shall try this wisdom out. Thank you lol 🙏🏾
You're so right! Spaghum moss is terrific! I have grown so many thing s in it! Houseplant seeds, venus flytraps, pitcher plant, houseplant cuttings, just about anything!! I even got a free sundew that sprouted in mine!! 😍😍
If I may warn you about these pots you have transplanted into, in three months literally every opening will be occupied by a runner root. They are fantastic, you can hardly overwater in them, but they are an incredible pain in the butt when it comes time to transplant. You probably already know why. It took me two hours to get my Alocasia out without destroying too many roots.
@@ohtheplacesyoullgrow most importantly, I absolutely love your channel. You are an energy bomb mamma, I dunno how you manage all of that. Kudos to you.
