I'm 100% convinced she's a vampire (also Yoohyeon looks as cheeky as ever, maybe that's why I'm irritated: in Dreamcatcher her stage personality is really serious. But off stage she's a puppy. And in Minx she's just a puppy the whole time)

As well as the girls did w/ this concept, it was the darkest time in their career, unfortunately, especially after they disbanded. Dami tried to run away, Siyeon was depressed and considered giving up singing, and when DC debuted, she wore pants for years and would only wear shorts or dresses if it was a stage outfit the whole group was wearing. Sua said she’d never cut her hair again, and it took her years just to dye it again. After they disbanded, they often cried themselves to sleep. I can’t imagine the amount of pressure Jiu must’ve felt at that time as their leader. That’s why it was so cathartic to see her reaction during their first win. They went through even more as DC, and are still pretty shunned by the K-pop industry, but they’re finally starting to reach big milestones this year like being invited to their first award show and performing at Primavera. They were the only K-pop act invited. They’re 300,000 album sales away from being the 2nd (if I’m not mistaken) million album seller from a small company. The first was GFriend.

@@Why.Just_why I can't pinpoint it, but some Somnias who Minx stans mentioned that years ago in a comment section. Yoohyeon and Dami were finishing school when WDYCTMH was released (Fall 2014). There is the cutest clip with the members going to her graduation (Google Dreamcatcher Yoohyeon graduation). Love Shake came out later in the Summer of 2015. Minx Dami was the cute maknae. This explains why Dreamcatcher Dami is different (not the maknae anymore). Gahyeon took that role in DC. Minx's fail was mostly because they were at the end of the 'cutesy' era and were pretty much against groups like Red Velvet, Twice, Mamamoo, Girls Generation. Minx didn't stick out from the pack with their songs and MVs. Their songs are good but in comparison to other groups who had a newer appeal, they got overshadowed.

The thing is, Minx wasn't even bad quality-wise. Whenever I see reactions, everyone vibes with the songs although they didn't expect it. Happyface has a good eye for talent and they know it. After their failure, the CEO said that it wasn't the member's fault and that he would buy them a café or work at a farm (don't know which one is true or if both are true, I heard both) to provide for them. So as much as this hasn't worked out and we try to be respectful towards the members, I really trust Happyface. They made some unusual decisions for an entertainment company. Redebuting them was so savage, maybe they were just really desperate. But I 100% respect this choice (even if Dreamcatcher wasn't successful their debut is just so bold). Love Shake is a remake of their sister group Dalshabet 's song. The rash guards (scuba) were actually the CEO's idea and I think they're the most cute and unique outfits to ever exist in kpop. Another confession, Love Shake is definitely in my playlist😳They have at least 10 other songs in their discography that are almost unknown so check that out. You should watch a stage for WDYCTMH too bc Siyeon is hitting that whistle note live every time... Oh btw SuA HATES that hair, it's her personal nemesis. She never cut and dyed her hair ever since (to this extreme, she had red ish and pink ish and blonde ish for Maison). If you want to get some more insights, I'm sure someone already recommended "Dodging disbandment and other extreme sports" by Mera. Also insomnicsy has at least one video highlighting their relationship with their staff, they're all a big family.

For a little bit of background on Happyface I highly suggest watching the following video which shows parts of the selection process for MIXNINE. It shows how they care, how hard it was for them to watch the selection process and you get a glimpse how different must be compared to at least one other major company (in this case YG). It focuses on the male trainees so there is almost nothing from Dreamcatcher members in this video but we see the well known practice room. 😉 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bt5ciIFEgrw.html

@@j.w.u.5728 oh this sounds interesting, thank you. I'm actually so curious how a new group is formed and how everything works behind the scenes. I think the very simple reason why Minx ultimately failed was bc of the small company (and ok, HF didn't promote the perfectly too but still). If you see rookie groups nowadays and compare which company their from, the ones from the big 4 are so much more successful it's ridiculous. I also heard rumors that HF is building or training a new gg so let's just hope they don't repeat their mistakes. But then again they'll probably also need years of hard work to be recognised bc they're from a small company. Or maybe we'll get Dreamcatcher 2.0 with a re-debut after 2 years😂

Lee Juwon said he'd start a _cucumber company_ for them if Dreamcatcher didn't make it... I have no idea where he got the idea for cucumbers from, but let's face it, they're _all_ an odd bunch over there... 😜 Regarding SuA's hair, she _has_ dyed it quite a few times, but for the most part it's always been fairly subtle, like dark reds or purples. She did go almost blonde for Deja Vu, though, so Maison wasn't _quite_ the first time. She does have to be careful, though, because she seems to have particularly fragile hair, so she can't really bleach it too often anyway. The closest she's come to cutting it that short again was when she adopted a Hime cut (short at the front, long at the back) when she did the Tadow performance video, to match Seungyeon's. Seungyeon was so impressed, she suggested SuA should try cutting it as short as the front all over; SuA shot that idea down _immediately_ 😂

@@Brickerbrack yeah the comment is so long already I didn't want to write any more detail. I don't even know if they saw it, but you're right. Maybe next cb we get something really crazy haha. Yes the Tadow video she looked great, she had this kpop hair style right? The one with the very extreme layers (aka short in the front very long in the back) EDIT I mean Hime cut, exactly that sorry😂. I've only seen it in kpop so far but this might actually be my favourite. Hm I'm contradicting myself here a lot but maybe she just looks great in everything😄

The CEO of Happyface admitted later on that the group failed because the company did not promote or support them properly. There was no album with their debut, the comeback with Love Shake was delayed, and the song itself was a cover of a song originally done by Dalshabet, Happyface's 2ng gen girl group. I think that if Minx had been with one of the big Kpop companies then they would be like Twice is today, but then we wouldn't have Dreamcatcher. Sua's hair. After Minx Sua swore she would never cut her hair again and she hasn't. She hated it.

Fun fact: Love Shake remains one of their best known songs in Korea since it's used a lot in Home Shopping Channels. The thing is the song is well known but the group isn't bc it sounds and looks too much like most of the stuff that was coming out at the time. There's also the problem that Happyface Ent is a small company that is genius at content and concept creation but not as good at marketing (and managing). Whatever the reason we can all agree that the switch to Dreamcatcher was amazing and while it was hard for some of them (Jiu + Yoo) it was the best for others (Sy + Dami) I'm happy you're planning to check Dodging Disbandment, usually people stan even harder after watching that

At some point you are also going to get to see the CEO of their company, CEO-nim. He's really like an uncle to the girls, and his wife is the president of the company, so it's really like a family. There were two interesting quotes from him about Minx. In the first one, he said that the failure of Minx wasn't the girls's fault, it was the company's fault. When have you ever heard a CEO say something like that? And in the second, he said if Dreamcatcher would fail as well, he would become a cucumber farmer to support the girls. but they become famous during 4th gen era. i can't really see them the same gen as bts. using ' when they become famous ' is more accurate than debut dates imo. nobody thinks of doja cat the same generation as lady Gaga despite Doja Cat debuting in 2013, in fact they think of her as 2020 artists alongside lil Nas x. similarly, people will think of Loona alongside Dreamcatcher, no one thinks of EXID or GOT7 alongside Dreamcatcher. dreamcatcher also became famous the exact same time Loona , G-idle became famous. Brave Girls is kinda anomaly but they became famous using a song from 2016, which is why I still put them in 3rd gen. but dreamcatcher's most famous song was 2020's Boca, which is when the era of 4th gen is making it's mark. Boca also sounded like 4th gen. i don't like using Minx to determine what gen dreamcatcher is because tht would leave handong and gahyeon out.

I think even the first five have now reconciled themselves to that past and embraced the era. Minx was the typical cutesy, bubble gum pop, which many groups were already into. The reason why Minx failed is because they were up against some bigger girl groups like Red Velvet, Twice, Mamamoo, GFriend, among others. During Minx era, most were very young, and Dami was the maknae. The girls were pretty uncomfortable with the concept as a whole, especially Siyeon, Dami and SuA. When HappyFace Entertainment decided to pull the plug on Minx, the most affected by the disbandment were Siyeon, Dami and Yoohyeon. Siyeon's mental health was so badly affected that she did not leave her room for weeks and even didn't even wish to do music. She and Yoohyeon would often spend hours at gaming cafés. SuA hated her Minx look badly too with the short, blonde hair and skimpy outfits. It hit them so hard that Siyeon and Dami used to have flashbacks whenever there was mention of Minx. The girls that you see now as Dreamcatcher are more truer to their respective personalities and preferences. The company also gives a lot of freedom and instills faith in the girls, which reflects in their music and life as idols. Also the girls are mature and sensible, having lived with and /or known each other for years.

It's not that the songs are bad, but I think that the market for this was oversaturated at the and they had some bad luck on timing. I still think of Dreamcatcher as a 'new' group but it's wild to think that they are really of the same vintage as (or actually slightly older than) Lovelyz (recently disbanded), Oh My Girl (just lost a member at contract renewal time), GFRIEND (recently and suddenly disbanded), April (recently disbanded) TWICE, Red Velvet, etc. Not to mention the juggernaut that was (and still is) BTS. Dreamcatcher's CEO said "it wasn't the girls who failed. We failed them." They believed in the girls and decided that instead of disbanding or just putting along in an overcrowded market, that they would try a radical approach. It is surprising how many groups fail or stay well well well below the radar. I think Minx could have continued, but I don't know if they would have broken out and we likely would have lost them to disbandment. Even some of the great groups from that era met surprising and sudden ends (RIP my beloved GFRIEND).

They were on par vocally with Red Velvet and Mamamoo, who also debuted in 2014, but their concept was everywhere and tbh there were still 2nd gen artists who were slaying as well as early 3rd gen artists. Why Did You Come To My House is more my music preference between the two. Though the MV is still kind of cringe.. Love Shake itself is not a bad song, it’s just the MV is very cringe for me.. could be because JiU and SuA were barely in their 20s and Yoohyeon and Dami were still teenagers. I prefer Shut Up and Just Like You from Minx b-sides. They are ones I could see DC doing a cover of.. not that they would do a MINX cover. Minx was never really Siyeon and Dami’s thing.. Dami in particular was uncomfortable with it. Minx had debuted in 2014, the same year as say Mamamoo and some other groups. I believe Red Velvet debuted in 2015. And groups like Girls Generation, BTS and other very popular groups also made comebacks, so they just got over shadowed. There is a video called “Dodging Diabandment and other Extreme Sports: A History of Dreamcatcher” goes though some of the Minx stuff and other stuff that DC has had to deal with. I would recommend watching it. The failure and brief disbandment impacted them all, but it definitely impacted Siyeon the most as dying that time she could not want performances. Her “Paradise is where I am” and Paradise solo definitely have inspiration from that time and that her paradise is making music and performing. There are times when Minx plays, be it by one of the other members or on an appearance, where Siyeon looks like she is seeing her life flash before her. There is vlive that she did with JIu where JiU stated playing Minx music and Siyeon was fine until JiU stated Love Shake. I swear Siyeon was 😨 and Jiu was 😈😁 at first. There was a show there did where the show played Love Shake as a random dance.. Gahyeon and Handong stated doing the dance, Dami walked to a wall and Siyeon turned around to the windows behind them. Though there is also a recent Dreamcatcher Note during Maison promotions where they are playing Minx through one of their phones. Dami is joking the phone and choosing the songs. SuA, JiU, Handong are messing around. While minx is hard for them still, there are times where they have fun with Minx. JiU suggesting to see if Love Shake was on a Karaoke that was being used for a SuA birthday v live with JiU and Siyeon.. and Siyeon leaving the room at mention of Love Shake. Minx is where SuA and Dami rapped. SuA stoped rapping full time in after Good Night. Rapper SuA has made returns a hand full of times. You need to watch all of their special clips, I would definitely do- Into the New World, lucky strike, self made MV’s, odd eye (dystopia Ver), scream (suits), scream (past outfits), Siyeon’s Faded, Speechless, we all lie, eraser; Yoohyeon’s Secret love song, perfect, touch; Yoohyeon and Dami’s Mood, Jiu and SuA’s Switch to me, Dami and Siyeon’s Ping Pong. Oh my, Really really, Taki Taki..

Even if you don't include their MINX era, Dreamcatcher is mostly considered to be a Third Generation idol group (with groups like TWICE, Mamamoo, GFriend, Blackpink). Around that time, a whole of lot of girl groups either debuted or dropped "bigger" songs than the two. It was difficult for them to really stand out and get attention. But in a way, their fall as MINX was a blessing in disguise because it result in Dreamcatcher being born. This video does a great job in covering the group's history especially the MINX days. "Dodging Disbandment and Other Extreme Sports: A History of Dreamcatcher" by mera ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YIgCAp3i1os.html It stops at the 2020 mark so it's not up to date but I think it's still a good video that manages to get the group's time up until then across very well. There have been moments where the original five members cringe whenever anything MINX-related is brought up. Handong and Gahyeon do enjoy it as there's a video of both dancing to Love Shake. Buuuutttt, it seems nowadays the five are more "accepting" of their dark past as there's a recent vlog of them singing "Love Shake" for fun cause Dami started playing it on her phone. Technically, Dreamcatcher did sorta went back to the summer cute aesthetic last year when they did the photoshoot for their mini-album, "Summer Holiday"; the album BEcause is on. In a behind the scenes video, Dami commented that she hasn't smiled in a photoshoot in a long time which is probably a reference to her MINX days

If you watch a video on YT about how difficult it was for DC and especially Minx you would get to know why the group failed at the time. Apologies, but I cannot remember the details for the video. Basically the group's coming out at the same time were stronger and the competition was so fierce that Minx didn't stand a chance. They did reasonably okay, but not enough. One thing is they had the talent from the start.

Ah, the Minx pilgrimage. Every InSomnia has to watch these two MVs at least once to get the culture shock. As much as the girls (mostly Siyeon) don't like to acknowledge Minx for the most part, I think it was formative for them on how to survive in the industry. Siyeon's solo song Paradise basically is her feelings about Minx and its failure. It was just market oversaturation at that point. When your competition at their debut are Red Velvet, Gfriend and Mamamoo, you're kinda screwed. The market was saturated and there was nowhere for Minx to go. Dreamcatcher, on the other hand...

Recently Dami joined in the fooling around while singing love shake. Siyeon still doesn't like it though, she'll usually step away or just ignore people when they are singing the songs. It's not a good period for them, the failure weighed on them. JiU started questioning her ability as a leader, Dami and Yoohyeon were underage with the video being uncomfortably sexual and Siyeon stopped listening to music entirely post hiatus. She still has a visceral reaction to it being mentioned. Particularly love shake but she'll tolerate her members joking about it and even likes some of their bsides. When the girls did a reddit ama last year they had to ban any questions relating to minx.

Minx was part of their concept for Dreamcatcher in that Minx was their dream and that they went into (of course they didn't plan that). Their nightmare was being trapped in those cutie concept Kpop genre and that they were trying to break & escape from it as Dreamcatcher and free themselves from such stereotype eventually. We have to give credit to their company however as rebranding a KPop group rarely happen and I've seen a lot of talented groups disbanded early such as the amazing group Hot Issue recently.

I feel like all Insomnias felt this way the first time they saw MINX 🤣✨ Honestly, they changed concepts because it was the end of the cutesy era and they were being overshadowed by the more popular groups- however, when MINX comes up, half the members admit to this day they were absolutely miserable and hated MINX's music and concepts. I think Siyeon is always the loudest to talk about her MINX misery, and YooBin silently protests anything MINX when faced with it. Yoohyeon was also miserable and seems to silently protest like YooBin does, only with less animosity. Minji and Bora still have the same energy tbh, they are also the most open to MINX stuff when faced with it, they dont get mad or protest like the others, and lots of times they even make joke references (only to be ignored by other members when they do).

All the ex-Minx members really don't like remembering these times. Probably bc the concept didn't suit them and it didn't really take off. But both Handong and Gahyeon really enjoy the songs and tease them about that era a lot. We joke a lot about Siyeon having war flashbacks whenever Minx is mentionned, so we try not to tease them too much as fans to not cause them any discomfort. But to be honest, I have discovered Love Shake after stanning them and I unironically enjoy the song. It reminds me of older kpop songs, and the song is good. I think most of the fandom looks at Minx the way you'd look at a old drawing you made as a child : it's not as good as your drawing skills as an adult, but there's something endearing about it.

i believe 2014 would be the start of 3rd Gen. Part of the reason Minx didn't succeed was the competition the were up against. Mamamoo, Red Velvet, Lovelyz and LABOOM all debuted this year. not to mention 2NE1 released one of their highest charting albums in "Crush". Then in 2015 Red Velvet gets their fifth and final member in Yeri. CLC, Gfriend, Oh My Girl and Twice debuted. Amber (f(x)), Mina (Girls Day), Taeyeon (Girls Generation) and Sera Ryu (9 Muses)(disclaimer, I'm a big Sera Ryu fan and one of a very few I support on patreon😘Love ya Sera) all made their solo debuts this year also. As you can see Minx had some VERY tough competition, especially in the cutsie/bubble gum pop genre. Mera's "Dodging Disbandment and other Extreme Sports" touches on this and other hardships the girls went through and how they overcame them, even after they re-debuted as Dreamcatcher. cheers EDIT: Sera Ryu is the unofficial/official InSomnia president😇 JiU was 20 and 21 respectively. SuA was also 20 and 21. SuA has said she would never go back to that bob cut LOL. Siyeon was 19 and 20 (this era is also the reason Siyeon hates short shorts). Yooyeon was 17 and 18. 5:55 How did it fail? It's 2014, just look who debuted around this time with them and you will know the answer. Taken out of context it seems good but it was completely drowned by what was going on that year. Think MAMAMOO, Lovelyz and Red Velvet. 2015 wasn't much easier, think GFriend, Oh My Girl and TWICE. Also that concept in 2014 was already old and massively overplayed. Most of the new groups at that time were about challenging that status quo. And yes, indeed, that's how 3rd generation was being born. It shows that no matter how talented the group members are a marketing choices for a group concept and image can make absolutely huge difference. CLC, debuted in 2015, is also a fitting example of that.

Minx didn't really flop. They simply weren't noticed. They flew under everyone's radar. Competition when Minx debuted was really stiff. I mean REALLY stiff. While they were trying to break out and get noticed powerhouse groups like Twice and Red Velvet were debuting. Their first comeback came out just as GFriend debuted. Add to this the fact that they were from a very small, relatively unknown company. Minx didn't get the hype and insta-fans / company stans that the Twice and Red Velvet received when they debuted. Minx was pretty much doomed right from the start. Some trivia... Dami was 17 when Minx debuted so, yeah, she was a little young for the concept. I htkn Yoohyeon was only 17 as well, but I could be wrong. You will never see SuA with that hairstyle again. She hated it and still hates it to this day. JiU has a minx poster on the wall in her bedroom. Siyeon hated the cute concept. She's been a rocker chick since she was in school and she really wasn't happy during her Minx days. The drama and trauma of Minx's disbandment... Some people like to over dramatize how the members feel about the disbandment of Minx. First and foremost, yes, as you can imagine they went through a tough time when they found out Minx was going to be disbanded. I won't go into all the details here. We'll just say that it was pretty rough. I mean, no one wants to hear that they failed and, for a short time, none of them knew what their future held. However, it's not like any of them has PTSD because of Minx's disbandment. Yes, Siyeon, SuA and Dami will cringe when someone mentions Minx or when they hear a Minx song, but they're not going to break down and cry about it. They all, at this point, joke about it and / or laugh it off. Gahyeon and Handong regularly tease the other members about their Minx days, which is something they wouldn't do if they thought it really bothered them. So, yeah, it was a rocky road for a bit there but they've all gotten over it, for the most part. Some of the cringe is still there. PS: Now that you've seen the cute side of Dreamcatcher, it's time for you to experience the cute side of Pixy. During an interview, when asked what concept they would like to try, some of the members said that they wanted to try a cute concept because most of them haven't had a chance to try it yet. All Art, doting father that it is, said "Okay" and gave the girls what they wanted. The result was the Call Me performance video. You should check it out.

Minx did flop unfortunately, even if the song is good and well executed. The market was oversaturated with groups of similar concept and Minx was buried at this time. They also debuted at the same time as Red Velvet, Mamamoo, and Lovelyz all of which overshadowed any other group from that year. The members (except maybe JiU) have negative feelings towards the Minx days (JiU is Minx's biggest fan of the 5. For a long time she had a poster in her closet well into the DC years. Everyone else wants to forget it even existed). Most likely just a lot of left over anxiety. The group failed. SuA hated that haircut and will never where a bob that short again. Happyface went with the DC concept because nobody else was doing it. Lesson learned I guess. The members agreed to the re-debut because they felt they could do any concept. They were right. They have the skills and motivation to succeed regardless of the situtation. The most amazing part is all 5 of them stayed for the re-debut. Most companies would not retain at least one of them. I know we like to think DC has had a lot of bad breaks over the years, but they also have been lucky as hell at times. Sorry for the long winded rant. Thank you for your time.
