I feel like the 5 hour battery life is more than sufficient for almost everyone. You're not a kid in the back of your parents' car, so even on a cross country flight it would be more than enough. That is a really nice looking mod for a console I've never heard of. I love Thursdays.
For what it's worth you can get way more if you're willing to use mid brightness setting and pixel mode on. Easily over 10 hours. Would be great if Nacho did the test again with those conditions.
@@MachoNachoProductions What batteries are you using? My rechargeable energizers barely last, and neither do standard alkalines… using lithium batteries over time would be a waste to constantly replace. Is there a rechargeable kit/mod
hey Tito! glad to see that the mods work, I have installed this mod several times on different Neo-Geos, and I wanted to point out some of the negatives of this mod, specifically one, the touch sensors. since they are so close to the screen, they tend to get triggered if you play any game that has a lot of button presses like the many fighting games on the console, not only that but it seems like the sensors are not perfect, almost anything inside the console itself triggers them therefore getting stuck in a never ending loop of the pixel mode and battery indicator turning on and off, it seems like its better to get rid of them overall if you never want to run into any issues with the mod, sometimes even the PCB touching the back of the screen triggers these things, so be careful with that, I had many trial and errors with this mod and I hope my comment can help any future modders out there!
@@MachoNachoProductions No problem. Thanks very much for the review and install guide. I've been waiting for someone to review this kit since I noticed it a few weeks ago. Cheers
So from my own experience with this mod installed, you can get way more battery life than 5 hours. I used 2x Duracell Quantum and use pixel mode on, and brightness at the middle (10/20), am able to get nearly 5 hours out of a quarter use of the batteries. Haven't managed to run them dry yet, but at this rate I think 15+ hours is probably feasible. This is with sound on about half to two thirds. Both touch sensors removed cause they were triggering too easily which I found annoying. The only flaw of this new lcd is that if you turn it off and try to reboot and the batteries are warm (such as from having had your hands leaning against them for a long time), the unit will boot up with a black screen. The solution was to let it sit a few minutes and then reboot and works fine.
For information, with this new IPS screen, it is advisable to use 1.5v alkaline batteries or rechargeable batteries with a constant voltage of 1.5v, because conventional rechargeable batteries have a voltage of 1.2v and this is not sufficient for the IPS screen. If you use 1.2v rechargeable batteries, the console will turn on the first time you use it, but after that the screen will not turn on, there will be only sound and no picture. In this case, you have to remove the 1.2v batteries each time, wait a bit and then put them back to play again. Conclusion, buy 1.5v stable voltage rechargeable batteries or alkaline batteries
After completing this mod myself, I would recommend just desoldering the two touch sensors for color wash and brightness. I found that the only color pallet I wanted was the original and the brightness feature can be accessed in the new screen’s menu. While playing a fighting game, hard/fast button presses triggered the brightness touch sensor, so I just got rid of it.
@@jeremylovesretro Yeah you were right, actually in the last 24 I ended up popping those sensors out too. So glad I did, can hold the system in more varied ways to relax one's hands. Also the battery sensor isn't that accurate to begin with in my opinion. Best to pop out a battery and check it with a measurement tool or two finger presses if the battery has a build in reader. This new screen is so awesome though.
Agreed. I just about always keep the Brightness at 10 out of 20 anyway. Unless playing in complete darkness or sunlight. The only annoying thing about the menu is that you can't keep the game paused while changing settings and means you may accidentally do things in game that you don't want to. So you need to make sure you make your settings before playing.
Just installed mine and it looks fantastic. Just a few things I'd probably add to the installation tutorial; make a note of which wire is supposed to connect to each button test point before securing the motherboard, I'd say install the touch controls in the top half of the shell before installing the motherboard and, finally, if anyone wants a truly solderless install, the speaker can remain attached to the motherboard the whole time.
I had this system as a kid. No one knew about it. But I always remembered the name. Recently found one online and will be getting one soon and possibly gonna do a mod for nostalgia
Great video. I used it to install mine. Only step you missed is how to install the touch sensors. I had to figure that out myself but got them working. To answer your question, yes, if you hold down the pallette button it turns on or off the pixel mode.
Hey thanks for the video, I just plucked up the courage tonight to install mine, I watched your video a couple of times and used it as instructions to compliment the original instructions (well, tbh your video is better instructions than the instructions!)
This is a very cleanly edited and clearly presented video, I can't fault it. I also think the background music is well suited without being obnoxiously loud or distacting. Well done!
I know nothing about the neogeo pocket but I used my ears and heard him say the original had 40 hrs of battery life while this one tested at 5hrs.. meaning the second screen was in between but if u really cared you could google it
Yeah I unfortunately didn’t run a test on it. It would most likely be longer than the IPS. I may have to run a test on it in a future video. Cheers John!
The original and New NGPCs get about 42-45 hours at max volume on two quality dry AAs so this screen consumes several times more juice than the actual NGP does. Energy consumption is at least 3x if not 4x a stock system. So much for the efficiency of modern components...
I put it in, thank you for the instructions and review! I also had the previous backlit screen mod and this one is substantially bigger. I picked up an aftermarket case, but the trans black one - there is some light bleed, but it’s not terrible. Probably could have masked it off had I thought of it up front. The ability’s to adjust the screen via OSD is a win.
Thank you for this video. I used it to upgrade mine from the older TFT backlit screen and this one is so much better. I’m also happy the case closes all the way now, something I couldn’t do with the last screen. Also yes, if you hold your finger over the other sensor it turns pixel mode on and off. Takes about 5 seconds.
Like I've commented before, I really wish you would have conducted your own battery tests with the other screen types. It would've been nice to see stock vs. TFT vs. IPS in one video showing the difference. I'm not sure why you assume the stated battery life is accurate as manufacturers often pump up their battery life claims. Regardless, I enjoyed the video, and look forward to the next one.
Would love to be able to do all those test, however given my full time job and current equipment setup, it’s very difficult for me to run test longer than 20 hours. I do what I can with what I got. I’m glad you still enjoyed the video though. Cheers TJ!
This was definitely needed for the NGPC! The TFT mod just really didn't cut it with the loss in screen size. The NGPC is also a handheld that you just cant get a great feel while playing on an emulator device like the RG351 because of the lack of the clicky stick. Mine is arriving soon and can't wait to be playing the best handheld golf game ever made (Turf Masters) soon without needing a light source!
This is great! Love this console. Def buying this kit! I've always thought that this is one of the most comfortable handhelds to hold. Your work continues to be exceptional 👍
I saw this video and I got super excited. I already did the TFT screen mod in my NGPC and now I already bought the kit for this full size mod. Did you hear that this mod for the Slim version is also in the works? I think according to the eBay site it's going to be released next month. I'll definitely get it also.
@@MachoNachoProductions I would like to see that video. I have a Slim that seems like the micro switches in the analogue stick don't register all the time and I would like to fix it but I don't have any experience with those types of switches.
@@MachoNachoProductions I know my Slim is stubborn to turn on due to the type of battery contacts they use, which are the swirly ones as opposed to a solid piece of metal. I have to wiggle the batteries. That's a place I'd check, plus the contacts for the power button might be oxidized and the silicon carbon buttons may need to be cleaned thoroughly with IPA and be recoated in pencil graphite. Capacitors on NGPCs are high quality and the components rival or exceed Nintendo in reliability and durability. It's totally possible to ruin one of course, but I can't see them killing themselves from normal use. Hope this helps!
thanks for the tutorial, Tito! i just finished installing this kit on my old, ugly blue camo one (replaced the shell with the black transparent one) and it looks and plays amazing. i really appreciate the special care you took to film this from the perspective of the person following the tutorial. it must have taken some planning to get that right. thanks again!
What batteries are you using? My rechargeable energizers barely last, and neither do standard alkalines… using lithium batteries over time would be a waste to constantly replace. Is there a rechargeable kit/mod?
@@MachoNachoProductions Mate, your video is a god send! It's criminal SNK never released the NGPC with any backlighting, so have been looking to mod my NGPC for years. Your tutorial was perfect! My soldering skills definitely need improvement though haha Thanks again!
Tito your videos are awesome, informative, and your production is through the roof. I feel like you really put a lot of heart into it and it shows. Anyways thanks for what you do.
Thank you so much Brian🙏! That really make me happy and means a lot to me! I do put a lot of time and effort into these videos but I also have fun doing it! I’m so thrilled you are enjoying the channel! Cheers buddy!
You're welcome Macho. Looking forward on seeing more from you. If you have done Neo-Geo or SNK content previously or planning to do so, I'll be glad to share them on the Neo-Geo thread for you kind sir. 8^) Anthony..
Very nice video, as always :D Have you seen the "new" GBC Q5 IPS 2.6" screen mod? It's pretty much the same as this one, but for the GBC! (screen a bit bigger than stock, and retro pixel effect available) I would live to see you do a review of the GBC kit, see what are your thoughts on it :)
Great video! Was able to install my screen 😃 has anyone experienced the screen going blank and sound only? Or how about the screen blinking on and off while playing? 🤔
Yes. Those are both normal. The screens use up alot of juice. If your screen is blank with just sound after turning it on, turn it off, wait about 30 seconds and turn it on again. This usually fixes it. When the screen starts Flashing on and off repeatedly, it means you don't have enough voltage left in the batteries to power the screen. You can hours more battery life out of the screen by using some of the lowest brightness settings. I find setting 3 out of 20 to be plenty if you are playing in a dimly lit room. Also Lithium batteries last about 50% longer.
@@overnightdelivery thanks so much for the reply! Loving this new screen. Added to another NGPC of mine! I’ve been using eneloop pro rechargeable batteries and I’m getting at least 5-6hrs
Excellent video. Didn't know they offered this screen or replacement shells. I especially applaud you for the no cut mod approach. $40 seems fair for the kit. Seems they have at the time of this writing a clear transparent and smoke black transparent shell for sale. Would be nice to get some blue's or red's up there as well. I'll consider this mod in the future but my pocket color is likely to collect dust as a shelf ornament showpiece as the Analogue Pocket is set to release this year.
Pixel Mode being ON is actually more authentic than being OFF. Because the original TFT display on the NGPC has a similar square grid pattern. Also it hides the jagged edges of the big pixels.
Oh man i got the small one lol i dis mine when i seen your video i was blown away never thought they would release one for the ngp so i bought one right away lol I'll probably order one of these in the summer with jobs down i cant afford it. Ill add all the features. Why not they are available :) thanks for videos
I ended up doing this same mod/build along with a cap kit today with the console5 kit with aligning bracket. It really is a huge upgrade to the original screen, looks great. The shell doesn't fit together well though (PCB doesn't seat right on the d-pad side, leaves a shell gap by the cart slot), and too much pressure on the bottom right of screen is causing a bright spot). I'm suspicious of the added thickness from the aligning bracket. I will need to try taking it back apart and do a test fit with no bracket and probably redo the build using the adhesive strip. Kind of disappointing, but it's a repro shell and this screen won't ever be going into the original shell anyways. So not a huge deal to permanently mount it One thing I will say is that I ended up wiring it for the OSD menu. The OSD menu is great, but I absolutely hate the touch sensors. I ended up going back in once already and tossing them. As a side rant, SNK actually left 1 screw off the shielding and 2 screws off the motherboard (I've owned this thing since it was new and never opened it before) What the hell, SNK?
@@overnightdelivery Good to know I'm not alone on that. To update on this, I did redo the mod without the aligning bracket. While it eliminated the bright spot, the repro case still doesn't have an ideal fit. It seems like the ribs on the repro case are pressing against the original mainboard somewhere on the right side causing a slight gap near the link cable port. It is definitely better than it was with the aligning bracket in, but I am still going to want to take it back apart eventually to try filing down the ribs to get a better fit. I might consider abandoning the repro case, but at this point the screen is stuck to it so I'd probably be stuck buying a new screen if I wanted to go the route of using the original case.
@@rorystfu Yeah. Only thing bugging me about the mod is having to cut the case to fit and then not having it fit properly. But who knows if a better fitting screen will show up anytime soon. Never liked the original NGPC screen.
@@overnightdelivery It should fit fine, and the most recent kits once adjusted fit the bezel area properly. But, yeah, once you commit there isn't any going back to the original screen since it's friction fitted. I hesitate to do this to my NGPC fat model, but even now it wouldn't cost a huge amount to get another. I am *really* hesitant to mod my slim model though, as much as the original screen sucks I'm not sure if i can bring myself to do it.
i love all your mods but mostly the way you presented them to us! Another great video! The OSD of the screen looks the same as the latest one version for Game Boy DMG. Maybe from the same creator? I don't know. Can't wait your next video! Peace and love from Greece!!!
Thank you so much Tsigarinho🙏! I’m so glad you are enjoying the videos! I will be taking a look at that DMG kit when I get a chance. It looks very cool! Cheers buddy!
They've already been expensive. It was the WonderSwan Color that absolutely skyrocketed in price after the IPS kit came out. They were horrible with their stock screens and sold for less than $20. Now they go for well over $100. Oddly the Crystals have not lowered in value despite not IPS kit made for it.
I like not having to change the batterys in my NGPC more or less at all. I've had it since 2018 and have only replaced them twice. I am far more inconvenienced buying batteries all the time than I am playing in the sun.
Just Picked up my first NGPC after watching your last video. I think I'm going to buy a shell and backlit solution now......does the spending ever stop???? I still love it, just a pricey hobby to have!!
Definitely will try this mod in the future. Battery life isn't a huge issue for me since I typically play games for a couple hours. Plus with rechargable batteries available like eneloop batteries, this mod would still be fantastic.
After listening to this music I was overwhelmed with the urge to look for The Great Pumpkin. And it's only February! Anyway, I'm interested. The lower battery life is a bummer, but I guess that's the price you pay for backlighting. I just need to get my old NGPC back...
Haha that’s true, I hadn’t thought of that, it does sound eerily similar! You should do it dude! If you have the battery a normal brightness I’m sure it’ll be quite a bit better. Cheers Jess!
I can't believe it's already been more than 2 years since I started watching your vid. One question: What was the reason why you didn't just use the touch control it came with and not having to solder?
I regret not buying a NGPC when GameStop was clearing out their stock years ago. I still don't have a NGPC but as cool as this screen looks I may just rectify that.
1.) So, you do a lot of aftermarket case mods, what do you do with the original cases? Do you just have a giant bin full of them now? 2.) Also, comparing the consoles battery life to the documented one is a bad test, you're comparing apples to oranges. You should test the battery life before and after. That "40h" of battery life should be verified as well, it's probably more like 10hrs...
Nah it probably is true or close to it. It's probably at least around 30 hours of gameplay. There's literally no backlight on the neo geo pocket color and it's basically impossible to see the screen without a light source near it. That's why the battery life is so long before the mod.
I got this screen installed and it’s great…..but there’s a few times here and there where I turned on the system and the screen won’t turn on, but I hear the music so the system is on. Not sure why. I try turning the system off and on, take the battery out, and then it works after reinserting.
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been dreaming of a backlit kit for the NGPC for years and now it’s here. I’ve followed your instructions and installed the screen. It looks gorgeous and I’m really happy with it, but I got one issue. Sometimes, the screen just won’t turn on. You can hear the sound, but the screen stays black. I tried everything, double checked every step, I can’t find what I did wrong. Do you have any idea ?
I’m glad the installation we t well for you! As far as I can tell it’s normal. I reached out to the seller and apparently the screen requires more power and sometimes doesn’t get enough to power on. If I had noticed it before making the video I would have definitely mentioned it. It sounds like your installation is fine. As far as I can tell it’s normal. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions thank you so much for your answer! It was starting to drive me crazy. I spent so much time trying to fix it, in vain. Now I feel relived. But yes, it’s definitely worth mentioning, and now people who read the comments will know. Again, thank you very much for taking the time to answer.
That would be really cool! I’ve seen so many videos of hydro dipping wheels and other object. I wonder how difficult it is? There’s definitely a technique to it. Cheers Tomas!
@@MachoNachoProductions absolutely! Difficulty depends on the pattern, and dipping technique - a more random pattern (like the SNK camo) would be more a forgiving pattern as it’ll hide irregularities/stretching if the dip isn’t perfect. Conversely, regular patterns (like SNK Carbon Fiber/Gridded patterns) would show stretching from an imperfect dip more readily. There’s lots of great online resources that have guidelines for this . You can use patterned films, or even spray the water bath top surface with a liquid so you can drip paint and swirl them around to achieve gorgeous results - Ibanez Guitars did breathtaking swirls like this in the 80’s and 90’s for Steve Vai (David Lee Roth Band). Hope this helps! Again, amazing videos, keep up the great work! ❤️
Love the videos, I watch every one. Personally, I think you should do a battery test before each mod to compare to after as opposed to what Wikipedia has listed
Thank you Rob! I would love to do those tests but given the constraints of my full time job and equipment set up, when battery life exceeds 20 hours or so, it become difficult for me to do those tests. Hopefully I can do them in the future.
Do you recommend Duracell or energizer? Have you tested the energizer ultimate lithium in the handheld? Duracell is a lot more affordable for more batteries. Is it producing about the same battery life?
Awesome! I have been holding out for a solution with a better profile. Already piecing together a project. Do you recall if the shell you purchased was a ZedLabz shell? Also thanks for posting your gear. I have quite a gear collection myself as I have been modding for awhile now but you had a few surprises in there that I am definitely going to check out.
Nice dude! I’m not sure if it’s a zedlab one. I have a link to it in the description. I got it from eBay. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are the same. Cheers buddy! You’re going to like this mod!
Very informative to say the least Macho. I love the NGPC. Great to have for reference for all to keep. I posted this up on, The Official NEO-GEO Thread on Atariage for you macho. Long pressing the brittleness sensor turns on the battery indicator. It seems the color palette sensor turns on the pixel mode on this kit. I may have to reattach it.
I have 2 problems with this kit, few lines are missing in the bottom (even with adjusting vertical position) I don't have the 10 lines at the bottom on the screen. And the other problem I have, if I turn off then on the console in less than 20 seconds the ips screen doesn't work 😢 Would some have any solutions?
Hi sir this video is great ! Would you have something similar for the NGPC ''slim'' on the ebay there is something about next month but I don't know when the message Wis from any advice for a case too ? Thanks!
Do you happen to have a monochrome Neo Geo Pocket and have you considered the selectable color monochrome IPS display for it? I've been considering getting one but they cost about the same as this one and I have not found a single video about them.
