High school English teacher here! One piece of advice I have from my experience is to be careful that any PD you do for high school teachers make sense in a high school context. Most of the PD we get is from elementary teachers who suggest things that simply wouldn't work at a high school level because A) we don't have the same classes all day, B) the behaviour issues are completely different, C) the interests and attitude of students towards school is so different, and D) the curriculum demands are different and we often have to go at a much faster pace than elementary teachers. So, I would say try to talk to high school teachers as much as you can to get a really good feel for what teaching high school is like and be really intentional about not just assuming that something that works for younger grades can be slightly modified and work in high school.
Thank you for the advice! I will definitely try and spend time in high school classrooms as much as possible. I’m also gearing my research more about how the brain learns rather than the specific strategies for grade levels.
Please please ask people in your area to have you guest step into their classroom during set up and give us a peek of their projects and first week ideas❤
@@BridgingLiteracy they all cover SO much ground. It's kind of odd that one isn't specifically named to the area! I'm within Lancaster-Lebanon IU area, hence much easier to know the area it serves. 😅
No, I work as a special education teacher in a school district within the IU13 area. I work closely with people in your role though. I love the support that's available from our IU. I would say most teachers either don't really utilize the IU support because they dont know about what's available or are outright not open to help. I could see that being your greatest "challenge" in your new role. If you ever need to view it from my lens, I'm happy to share.
As someone who is familiar with MTSS I feel like you will be able to provide teachers realistic ways to implement interventions etc. Often it’s not that teachers don’t want to do it right, but it becomes a lot of unrealistic expectations. Looking forward to following your journey!
You don't need to worry about being the best or reaching every teacher. The way you present your ideas is great and you will absolutely make a difference for many teachers. And then those teachers can better help their students. You don't need to worry about disappointing anyone! And just like with teaching, you'll keep getting better and better at it 😊
Hi, Bridget! It was nice hearing you answer questions about your new job! I completely agree with your comments about the parts of teaching that aren't so great: sub plans, challenging behaviors, and not be able to go to the bathroom when you want. I hope your transition to working at home and going to monthly in-person meetings goes smoothly. I hope you continue having a wonderful summer with relaxation and productivity (when you want to)! Thank you so much for your contributions to teachers everywhere! 💜
Congratulations Bridget! Yes, I can relate to you. I am a hermit when it comes to Summer break and have to really push myself to do things and get a routine going. It would be hard for me to work from home due to this reason. I know you will do great things!
When things fall into place so smoothly, it was definitely meant to be. Go with the flow and embrace the journey. I just recently went through a similar situation in my career. You will probably make mistakes but learn from them. It’s a new position and you will not know everything. Remember it’s ok to ask questions. I wish you the best.
Thank you for your genuine responses. Always enjoy your informative videos. May the good Lord bless you and your family. The Fly Guy part was funny. Thank you for making me laugh.
Hi Bridget, you are PERFECT for this job!👏 Your book, vlogs, blogs, and education influencers' workshops with Michelle are excellent job experiences. Go forth and have fun.💃 You'll be greater!😊💕🙌
WOW , Awesome opportunity you are having, I didn't lnow what to ask , but I just absorving everything you are telling us. Wish you all the best. I will revist all those good set ups and your tips even though am a English High school teacher
OH wow! Thanks for answering my question about the contract. In Arizona, we sign contracts in March-April and in my district, we signed in January for the following year!!! It made it very difficult to break a contract without paying anywhere from $500 - $1500 in my district.
Hey Bridget! Congrats! We have something similar here in Ohio! However, ours are called ESCs (educational service centers) and there are 51 across our state!
I would not miss pacing guides that are unreasonable. I would also not miss the helicopter and snow plow parents who feel that their children are saints. Thank you again for your video presentation. Take care.
Congrats Bridget! I also agree that things do happen for a reason. Just like you, this coming school year, after 13 years of being in the classroom, I will not necessarily be in the classroom. I will be a resource teacher/extras teacher. However, unlike you I did not have the opportunity to choose this new position as I was reassigned to it by admin. I had my cry, but I am also hopeful because I still do get to work with the kids. It gave me great comfort to know that you will also be moving out of your comfort zone and experiencing a new and exciting journey in your teaching career. Your videos on this topic actually brought me to tears, of course they could also be because I am 9 weeks pregnant. I think this new position will allow me more flexibility and a little less stress. Like you, I will not miss contacting parents with bad news or having to manage major behaviors all day long. Again congrats on your new position Bridget and thank you so much for sharing this exciting news with us. I look forward to watching your next videos!
It’s educational experience you have and the outlook you have for the students is what is driving you in this new position. I agree that education is lacking i many areas. You will make a huge difference in any area of education you work in. If it’s with students or other educators or school districts.
How many different districts have you worked in during your 12 years? How many different grades have you taught. I'm excited for you in your new position.
I taught at 3 total districts and schools (each school was in a different district). I taught kindergarten, fourth, fifth and sixth grade. I was a multiagency teacher for 6 years ( so I had 4-6 all in one class).
You don't get Doctor Kings Day off? That is unconscionable. People worked so hard to make that a federal holiday. I'm sorry for you. That is a mark against Pennsylvania. And especially since his sister, Dr. Farris just died last week. It makes me sad.
I didn’t share it in the video but I do have flexibility to take that day off. It has to do with only working the 188 days. So I will most likely take that day off as no schools will be open for me to assist. There are so many jobs that do they that off (I experienced this a lot outside of education) and it’s all about how we celebrate and remember him that counts. ❤️
