The new 2021 Kia EV6 is the Hyundai Ioniq 5's brother from another mother. It is a 328-mile family EV crossover that is an electric game changer. Why? Because the price starts at £40,000 in the UK, the warranty is 7 years, the quality and design rivals or exceeds that of many German brands, and it happens to have over 300 miles of range.
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.
30 years ago Kia appeared on the British market with the Pride. It was exceptional value, but it was a rebadged Mazda/Ford and looked like a sandwich box on 12-inch whitewall tyres. Zero style, but oodles of brand ambition. Fast forward to 2021 and Jonny believes the Korean Kia brand has become as middle class as Aldi, but with design flair that blows companys like BMW and VW out of the EV arena.
The ability to be used as its own power source with external plug sockets, plus be compatible with 400 or 800 volts means the EV6 is future-proofed to rapid charge at leading speeds, and all models sold in the UK can go beyond 300 miles. Its boot is a smidge smaller than the Ioniq 5, and it is more of a crossover than a giant Lancia Integrale, but what does Jonny think?

I saw the thumbnail and thought ‘Urgh, what a beast’ and not in a good way. But watching the video I’ve found myself warming to it and by the end I wanted one. Not sure how much of that is down to the car being interesting and appealing or the sales skills and enthusiasm of Mr Smith

EV6 and Ioniq 5 really are top class. If I was on the market for a new EV now I'd be really torn as I love the retro Lanci Integrale look of the Ioniq but the interior of the EV6 is so nice too. It's a pity you can't mix and match the exterior and interior as an Ioniq 5 exterior with an EV6 interior would be pretty cool. I don't think there's much else on the market currently that can beat these for the money.

I absolutely love the EV6, I was blown away by the Ioniq5 when I saw it and I'm sure I'd have to see and drive both before making a decision, but as much as the 5 is striking and modern but also with some retro touches, I feel like the EV6 is a much better and more cohesive design. It somehow appears more traditional in it's car styling but at the same time looks forward and steps the EV game on... Can't wait to drive one and finally make the switch to electric at some point and that is something I never thought I would say!!

Great review as ever with some proper lol moments. Particularly enjoyed the ET seat profile comparison! I know it's not something you're particularly fond of- but I wonder whether, in future, you could tell us more about the self-driving capabilities of these vehicles? It's something I'm always keen to know as I do a lot of motorway driving, and lane assist, adaptive cruise control etc make a big difference to me.

Thanks for review, you making good videos but would like to give you suggestion, when you pointing out something on dash or on boot of the car at that time one camera must be behind you showing us what you talking about ? in this video almost 4 to 5 times I realised that you are showing us something and talking about some feature which we cannot see it but only you can see you. Once you adopt this method your videos would be liked and appreciated more. once again thanks for your lovely review. Cheers

The EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are the only two EVs I'm considering right now. Neither one has arrived at showrooms yet, but I think the Ioniq 5 is due soon. If the EV rebates kick in as expected, I may go for the Ioniq 5 over our other top choice right now, the Toyota Venza hybrid (Harrier in other markets).

Great vid as always Jonny 👌. A lot indeed has changed over 30 years - I would be interested to know what the difference is in terms of co2 generated to create each car in period for example. Has manufacturing progress lead to greater efficiencies or does a bigger, heavier car always lead to greater co2.

Love that EV6, it resembles the Toyota C-HR i think. The lines are very similar imo. I remember the Kia Pride back in the day. They were the Srar Prize of choice on many a TV game show. But to be fair to Kia, they gave it a peppy 1.3 engine, and they were better built than the Metro of the same era, but looked a little narrower. I also remember the white wall tires. All in all, a good little package for the price. I think they could be had for £4995, brand new if memory serves. And the equivalent Metro being about 2 grand more, and even more for a Fiesta. So yeah, a good value little runabout.

Really standard mirrors are much better for safety of cyclists and other users of roads. There its no much advantage on air resistance and cameras are not good for space awareness.

You never fail to impress with your "black book" knowledge, Jonny - just brilliant...! Regarding your EV6 side profile comparison with the Jaguar iPace, having now watched 5 reviews of the EV6, I'm genuinely surprised that no one has compared the side profile to the current Nissan GTR...? For me, the tapering side windows are an exact match.

When I was a teenager, my father was already in love with the large sedan of the Pony era. Forgot it’s name, but if I remember correctly it had Mitsubishi technology under the hood. So I grew up with a favorable view on what Hyundai had to offer. And it only got better over time. Korean was and is synonymous for me for Asian (read Japanese) thoroughness and inventiveness, becoming an exponent of that technological renaissance of the last decades and they (Korea) went there Lightning speed, convincingly and with a proven track record. Love their international maker space!

I'm only 24, I love manual cars like an old person, never driven an automatic. But thanks to your reviews, I've been warming up to EVs. You've shown through all these reviews that normal and practical EVs do exist and they are quite good. My country is a long way away from electric cars. Weak infrastructure, the costs of batteries make them too expensive etc. But when the time comes and EVs become cheaper, I'd happily switch from a manual car to an electric one. The Asian brands are doing a great job with design as well as features.

It's the Tesla delusion. Who really needs a car that fast? There's no situation where you're going to need faster that 6.5s in the real world, and you're only gonna get yourself a summons if you use it. There's a place for fast cars; although that place (that they're important to push the industry forward) is diminishing very quickly - but for most people there's no value in it, and you're just dumping energy when you do use it.
