Lmao!!! Best comment EVER!!! They should have formed the handle like his pony tail lol!!! Seagul is something else! I have watched some of the recent RU-vid posts on him and wow lol.
He never mentions the blade steel in the review. If its 440 you want that's fine. But that's a $60 knife max and $30 of that is paying for the name and the sheath looks quality. If your like batman type stuff be cool for the collection. But definitely not worth what they are asking.
The Buckmaster is so stupid on so many levels. Sure, why not slap a massive slotted hole in the weakest section of the blade! Heck, let's go ahead and add a useless full-length swedge to further weaken that section as well! Want to get yourself killed attempting mall ninja grappling stunts? We got you covered! Premium steel? On an $800 knife? _Heck no, buddy!_ You'll get good ol' 1960's era 420 HC and you'll be happy about it!
Your knife is one of the most important & versatile tools you carry. What knob would convert it into some half-baked grappling hook or sand anchor and then risk damaging it or losing it in the process?? Clearly Buck have been watching re-runs of Rambo and had a rush of blood to the head.
If I were a betting man, I would bet that the Cold Steel Caledonian will be collecting dust on Knife Center's shelves for a long time. It's not just a little over-priced; it's WAY over-priced. That's a $150 to $200 knife, at best. But when it comes to being over-priced, that Buckmaster in 420 steel really takes the cake!
@@bradenchurch552 It looks like something that you would find at a Flea Market for under $50. The design not only looks cheap, but the use of 420HC on these knives is the real deal breaker for me. Oh, and that absurd price..
Spy27 is the most strop responsive powder steel I have ever had in my hands. It's insane how long you can keep an edge going on spy27 with simple strop maintenance. If you are someone that don't sharpen but tries ro keep edges going as long as possible with stropping you will LOVE Spy27.
Agree. SPY27 is reasonably close to both S30V & S35VN in terms of performance. I have found that it does offer quite a fine edge structure and therefore sharpens up well and responds to stropping well. Note quite sure I'd rate the edge retention as insane but yes you can keep it going with regular stropping. Providing you don't pay too much for it, it's a good steel.
Please wait while I assemble the hook feature. Oh wait, which way would you like the pointy bits to face? Sorry, please wait while I disassemble the hook feature and turn the pointy bits around the other way.
Blaming Benchmade for other company's pricing is basically the TDS blame Orange Man for everything EDC community equivalent. This has officially become the most cringe and cliché meme of the cutlery world.
@@andrewfournier8817 Benchmade is well known for their Axis lock innovation which everyone else copied. Just as I expected you failed to give an example of a $800+ BM. Do they have some overpriced stuff? Sure but so do a bunch of other companies. Cry about it. Fact is many of BM's offerings are in the same price ballpark as Spyderco but it's trendy to hate on Benchmade so you follow the crowd like Mary's little lamb. Apparently my comments bother you. That's on you.
I saw a navy seal doing a video on knives he was issued/bought/used in the seals, he said the Buck was useless and no-one ever carried it. I don’t think this version will see much use.
For special forces knife is a tool. Thinking which one is the best is like looking for the best hammer. It must work. They don't care about the steel, designer or other crap like that. And I'm pretty sure they are not buying knives over 50$ max...
@@iamgroot4080 Blade HQ did a video years ago where they got a Recon Marine or something like that. It was cringy watching them try and get him to talk about something he clearly had zero interest in, he couldn’t have been less interested in steel, the brand or designer he just wanted something that worked and was not too expensive.
I just sold an original buckmaster to a collector not too long ago for 400 bucks, from a collector standpoint I can see somebody paying that kind of money for a collector !... But the truth be told the original buckmaster just like the new one I'm sure was pretty much a useless knife, over engineered from day one , heavy and bulky, and just really not practical for actual use in my opinion.
I was thinking the same thing - never heard of that steel, but the design is sexy and more companies need to start shipping knives like that with pocket sheaths!
I purchased a micarta handle one not long after they were originally released. While I think they are slightly over priced, I will tell you that it's one of the most ergonomic blades I own. The handle melts into my hand. The finish on mine is very near perfect. Carries very easily in the pocket.
@@WallachGaming Just FYI. RWL34 is the same as CPM154 and both are powered steel versions of 154CM (which has been around for many years now). RWL34 is made by Damasteel in Sweden who are well respected steel makers. It is a well rounded steel with slightly better performance than 154CM and about the same performance as S35VN. Boker use RWL34 as Sweden is close to Germany (whereas CPM154 comes from the US).
@@realbroggo Oh nice, CPM154 is a pretty solid steel, if it's actually the same composition I would have no issues there. It does seem slightly overpriced if that is the case given the materials, but it's also not too out of range with other really good pocket-friendly EDC fixed blades. I might wait a bit and keep an eye out for a possible sale...
@@WallachGaming Both the knife & the steel come from Europe which adds some cost compared to local manufacture. If you can get one on sale all the better!
@@EDCandLacei mean, magnacut has about the most balanced properties of any steel available. it’s not an edge retention champ but you’re not going to find any other steel that has the same edge retention while also being as tough as cpm 4v and borderline rust proof.
@@acid6urns I think he means Spyderco doesn't heat treat their MagnaCut properly. Not saying I agree with that sentiment because I actually didn't even know Spyderco had anything in MagnaCut so obviously I haven't had any experience with their MagnaCut myself. Nobody with any sense would deny the balanced properties of MagnaCut or it's top quality, but if it isn't heat treated correctly then it can't reach it's full potential. The only steel I know of that competes with MagnaCut is Vanax.
Sorry, that's a $300 accessory that doesn't come with the knife. I personally thought it would have a liquid compass in the pommel like the Rambo knives in the 80's.
Hey DCA, had anyone mentioned how nice it is that you keep your fingernails trimmed and clean? As an exhibitor of fine quality blades Thomas provides those incredible closeups to show the detail and it really helps my brain appreciate the professional aesthetic of the show, which is part of why I enjoy this channel so very much.
It's important to note that materials are a relatively small cost of knife production. (This is obviously a general statement & depends on the exact materials involved & production methods used.) Labour and administrative costs are much bigger drivers - especially for US & Euro made knives. Halving the size of a knife may only result in 10-20% lower production cost. Regardless of size - the knife still needs to be assembled, the blade still needs to be sharpened, the knife still needs to be boxed up, the boxes still need to be shipped out, etc. I'm not specifically defending this particular price just providing some context.
@@iamgroot4080pay attention knife bros. Knife companies are telling you blade steels do not make up the price of a knife. So stop paying extra for premium Steel
Don't know why I keep watching these RU-vid channels, I mean, I like David and Thomas, enjoy their banter, but I get furious when I hear the prices of some of these knives especially when subpar materials are involved. 🤨
I'm shocked to see a Mnandi here. I feared they were discontinued. They are among the finest pocket knives at any price, in my opinion. I, too, had an older one with the nail nick, which looked so much better than the generic oblong hole we get now. Can't say it's a deal breaker, I'm just glad they're still being made.
$800 for that Buckmaster is 100% tonedeaf pricing, and just nuts. But at least it seems like a way better knife than the original Buckmaster. And as other people have pointed out, that Caledonian is crazy in its pricing too. A bent steel clip for a $500 knife? That is... friggin' bananas.
Gerber LMF is about $100…and good/bad/indifferent is a military knife…and is also 420. And is a bit of a stretch. $800 is definitely in the realm of someone just making you a knife. Unless this knife comes with scuba lessons I don’t know who would buy it. Particularly as a Legacy knife it looks nothing like the original.
First off Im digging that new Cold Steel they released, 20 CV sounds like agreat fit and they really prettied it up. But $500 seems a bit much : / Also i like the look of that Tactile Turn Chupacabara but i worry about that lock failure issue, any word on whether they fixed that or not? Great stuff fellas, see you Saturday
Some of these knife prices are ridiculous! What kind of person pays $800 (or even $300) for a sharpened piece of steel in an economy when many cannot even afford groceries?
Does anyone else think, like me, that buck knifes, cold steel and every other knife company are completely insulting our intelligence ? It’s as thou they aren’t competing to see who makes a better knife but competing to see who sells their knife for the most money. What a joke 🤡
Two things here... One... I definitely feel that somebody is trying to get to my butt. Second... The weird thing is that there is a guy out there, maybe even normal looking, he may have a family, good job, never been arrested, he is a good guy, helped an old lady with crossing the street, gave some money to charity, never smoked in his life, he had one or two beers and never liquor... And he will buy it in the moment of weakness
Mr Anderson I feel your pain with the reverse flick, but I found it is easier and more convenient for my bigger than average hands if I use my index finger instead of my middle. You should give it a try. I'm 6'4", size 15-4E feet, and robust, let's just say, so we probably have similar hand sizes. My index falls in the same place that most people's middle fanger would be, plus I can get more power behind it so I don't have to roll my wrist with the flick to get it to deploy. I'm just glad you're back. The other guy is okay as a fill-in, but you have the knowledge, presentation, and practicality that resonates with most of us who take ourselves seriously but know when, where, and the right time for a more appropriate display of humor unlike some of the philistines in your vicinity when you shoot your videos. Keep up the good work, and do you keep in touch with Joe Flowers regularly or just at blade shows? I always thought you two have a great on-screen chemistry, and he would make a good guest for you to have on or interview in some capacity. Just a thought. Godspeed
The Caledonian Edge doesn’t even look or feel like a cold steel knife. I don’t like it at all, under new management they’re trying to be like Benchmade with Benchmade prices. They’re going to fail miserably if they continue to ignore the reasons people buy CS in the first place.
You got that right! I used to be a huge cs fan but I haven't bought any of the new models the last cs I bought was the drop point voyager they are either over priced or too short
I'm with you. Cold Steel use to be one of my go-to brands. Not any more. Lower quality materials and higher prices - great way to turn customers away. Lynn Thompson created Cold Steel because he loved (I mean really loved) knives and wanted everyone to share in his passion. GSM bought Cold Steel to make money.
Vosteed is really killing it with great designs, aren't they? I love my push button top liner lock Raccoon and my Mini Nightshade, looks like I'm going to have to get a Mini Psy-Ops!
While most people hate serrations they do have a useful purpose. Serrations are intended to improve the ability of a knife edge to catch or ‘bite’ into certain materials (eg. synthetic ropes where a plain blade tends to slide over the surface rather than cut). They also work well on substances that are soft, flexible or can be crushed easily with downward cutting (eg. bread & some vegetables). As a result of their design, serrations create a more aggressive cut. Some serrated blades can even perform like a small hand saw. The Swick 6 isn't a tactical knife - it's a self defence knife. The difference is important when it comes to serrations. As a general comment, from tactical perspective, serrations are often more of a hinderance than a help as they tend to tear rather than cut and can get caught up in some materials making their use frustrating. However, from a self defence perspective serrations can offer a benefit because of their aggressive cutting power. In situations where neatness doesn't count serrations can often cut through materials such as clothing more easily and can cause more aggressive wounds. If you are at risk of losing your life and you decide to use potentially lethal force to defend it, then you're going to want something that has the best chance of stopping the threat - neatness doesn't count. Hope this helps. (Please check local laws regarding the use of knives for self defence!)
Sorry to correct your mispronounciation, but it's skEE-an doo. In fact there's tecnically a soft V sound from the bh at the end, but don't worry about that haha.
@@realbroggo I love the knife, but hated the sheath. The clip was too bulky for my tastes. I upgraded to a leather slip with a low profile clip from DP Steel and Leather. I carry it all the time now.
Can you speak about the relationship between Dogwood Custom Knives and Ethan Becker? He was an author of The Joy of Cooking. One of my favorite cookbooks. 200 dollars for a kitchen knife is sky high for me. But it must be a real nice one. I like to buy boring commercial kitchen knives and give them a 2 hour final finish. Makes for a fancy kitchen knife on a budget.
Hey DCA, another great video. I just received my Pro-Tech PDW Invictus Auto which as usual arrived quickly and nicely packaged. I may have missed it, but have shown any ots autos recently?
Buck... you broke my heart. No one wanted the buckmaster to be rebranded as a dive knife. I would buy a worthwhile reworking of the old design, but this thing sucks almost as much as the price!
I love David but you should def hire me as I can actually flick the damn knives every which way possible and even front flip knives that aren't front flippers... 😆😊
Man I used to want a Mnandi so bad, but the inlays on the Gen 3 models so far have been very uninspiring to me compared to the richer, more exotic wood choices of the past.
News flash for Buck - 420HC was an entry level stainless steel in the 1980's and in 2024 it's still an entry level stainless steel. Yes the BOS heat treat lifts its performance, but it's not alchemy - it doesn't magically transform it into some sort of modern super steel. 420HC is VERY cheap to buy and work with. I feel sorry for those knife consumers who do not know any better and purchase this blade only to realise that it's the same steel as Grandpa's old 110. Sharp blades all.
I don’t know man, it just seems like the prices are high for what you’re getting. These are all $80 knives. What’s new and different to justify these high prices? Everything is basically the same as the drawer full of knives I have already.
The first two knives the cold steel and the buck 2.0 ..My question would be is Cold steel and buck out of their mind?, $500 for the cold steel and 800 for the 2.0 ... For that kind of money there's a ton of great knives out there I can get for that kind of cash !, I'm a fan of both brands but some of these knife companies are asking ridiculous prices these days !! 🤷
Benchmade: crazy unpopular pricing. Cold Steel *ahem GSM* Hold My Beer! Really sad to see. Was it at least DLC and just not mentioned? Still wouldn’t bring it close. They need to up the refinement by a large margin for a tactical folding liner lock that’s not made by Reate for $500 🙃 Reminds me of that you were supposed fight them. Not become them meme. Sheesh!
