Introducing the new LADA Niva!
It’s an all-Russian off-roader that rolls up with a low starting price of just £17,500! The question is, does the Niva really offer enough to make you consider it over… Well, pretty much any other car out there at the moment?!
Well for starters, the Niva clearly has a super retro design that’s hardly evolved since the car was first unveiled in 1977! From the boxy design upfront to the jacked-up appearance from the side, you're unlikely to mistake the Niva for any other recent car release!
Once you check out the interior… Well, it seems that this hasn’t evolved much since the 70s either! Don’t expect to find any mod-cons here. Instead, all you’ll find is an after-market stereo, a load of physical buttons and a whole heap of scratchy plastics!
So what do you think - could you make do with this retro-looking, no-frills car on a daily basis? Let us know in the comments!

I worked in a project in Sudan and we had Toyota Land cruisers and Nivas. In the rainy season only Nivas could move in the African mud roads. Although much more comfortable, the Land cruisers were getting stuck after 50 meters. And by the way, the front and rear bumpers were moving on a tough springs! So in minor collisions - the bumper does the great job of absorbing the hit without ANY damage, a real active bumper how it should be. And the outer car shape is simple and lovely in the short version.

The seat airbag has a simple reason: Regulations in Europe say, you need to have an airbag. But they don't say what airbag is that supposed to be. So, instead of remaking the whole steering rack to allow the airbag to be placed inside the wheel, and half of the car (because they would need to move the seat further back and to the right), they simply put one into the seat. It has an airbag, so it is legal. Job done.

I'm an American that has lived in Russia for the last 7 years. During this time I have owned 2 Lada Niva. This car is incredibly dependable. It is very practical and is almost impossible to get stuck. I did a stupid thing one time and had the Ice break underneath me and I did get my Niva high-centered. You can repair it yourself if anyting needs work and it drives without fail. Still running when I sold both of mine. If you want a little bit more performance around town drop it into low and then it's not so slow off the line. You can run through the gears pretty quick and you can do about 40 mph using 5th gear in low range. all in all a very good experience with this truck. A little context, I was a car dealer in the United States and have owned 1400 cars in my life. I have owned Land Rovers in Jeeps as well as a whole array of Japanese off-road vehicles. The original Ford Bronco was pretty nice as well. But for off-road use sheer practicality you can't beat the Niva

I owned one in the early 90s. Extremely uncomfortable, pain to drive, impracticle but absolute fun and lovable. I drove it through gulleys, rivers, beaches, sand dunes, ice roads, snowstorms on mountain roads, anywhere you can even hardly walk. Nothing in its price range can be compared. It does everything that an old classic Land Rover can do, at a fraction of the price. It can climb and descend stairs. Its heater is awesome, you can bake a cake at full blast - very handy in a Russian winter. Never left me stranded. Everyone should get one at least for a while, preferably while young and without kids. Warning: She can easily lose grip on a wet asphalt road and roll over, as I did once. Noone was hurt!

Immediately the car started spinning around like a whirling dervish, came alongside the curb and did a sideways half somersault into the ditch by the roadside. I bought a 1990 Niva Cossack for £70 in 2005.. I'd owned series land rovers before and done greenlaning in them. The Niva was fantastic compared to them..it was comfortable even with the offset pedals. It would cruise at 60mph in 5th ...a gear more than the landys..Off road it was amazing...I did ruin it by fitting higher profile mud tyres, which made it unstoppable off road but changed the gearing so hills required downshifts ,and eventually wore the clutch out..The clutch replacement was to big a job for me to do as a DIY mechanic.. But I had 2 years out of it...I've owned RR classics,Discovery's and defenders since..And I'd buy another Niva tomorrow.. They're quirky, fun and a pleasure to own 😊😊😊

Have to agree with this. I bought a mitsubishi as a rough and tumble car for long drives with a bit offroading capability. All great, but naturally they've insisted on putting a touchscreen on it and it is utter crap, and more of a hazard than a help when driving, not to mention the cacophony of bleeps and whistles that go off at random, none of which I have a clue what they mean. Of course thats not as bad as some newer cars, I drove a kia loaner with 'lane assist' that tried tugging the steering wheel off you on the motorway! I'm convinced there is a market for simple, 90s/early 2000s style cars with a simple dash with a radio and CD player, I wish car makers would take note

You heard me, for some reason, the moron in charge decided to make gearbox cheaper. So he made it out of cheaper metal. Now it breaks faster. On a car, that is SUPPOSED to travel through mud, and have a ton of dirt on wheels. Like, you should reinforce the gearbox, not cut costs on it. In muddy conditions all of these fancy brands would get stuck after 50m, but Lada would continue all the way. I don't remember it EVER getting stuck and there was no lack of trying. Initial vehicle is a Fiat 124 station wagon with chopped between B&C pillars to create a short wheel base. Lifted spring, added front diff and low gear, replaced rear cast drums for aluminium. Originally with 1.6 L carburettor single OHC and steel timing chain. Russians started Niva in 1975 when the cooperation with Fiat ended. BDW, original Fiat 124 with 1.2 L was a European car of the year in 1966.

My dad had one in the late 80's along with the original design and the Sumara, I learned to drive on it. Off road with oversized grabbers this thing was absolutely unstoppable. In the Newfoundland cold climate it was super dependable. I heard people struggling with them in warmer temperatures, I am guessing between the tuning and design (specifically for Russia). I will say this though, it never failed me or our family.

Amazing. I test drove a Niva at the Toronto Car Show in the mid-80’s. It was barely different compared to this one. There was a big excavation behind the building, with ropes to define an improvised course. Crap car, but but amazingly capable in the mud, and small enough to go just about anywhere. I’m amazed that UK road regulations allow it to still be road-legal!

A friend in Siberia ended up going back to a Niva after owning a Land Rover Discovery, for the simple reason he could fix it when and if it went wrong. The Land Rover had to be towed out of a forest to a dealers and was expensive to repair. It was never designed as a "tarmac" car, people knocking that ability have never driven in Siberia, there is a reason UAZ is still being made today.

What I appreciate about it is that it's simple. That simplicity is something most car companies need to go back to. Sure a big screen is nice sometimes but sometimes having knobs and switches for everything is nice too. I really do wish that companies would sell a more analog hot hatch again.
@eivis13

Fun fact, a screen of a gen 2 prius consumes ~20w of electricity, while for 3 rotary switches you can get away with 3w. Infotainment and climate controls MUST BE KEPT SEPERATELY FOR ACTIVE SAFETY REASONS.

In 1994, I drove from Stepanakert the capital of Nagorno Karabach (which was technically part of Azerbaijan) to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, in a convoy of three Lada Nivas. The route took us through the Lachin Corridor, then disputed territory captured from the Azeris, via the bombed out city of Lachin itself, trecherous mountain passes shrouded in thick fog and across vast wilderness plains. We bought fuel from a man with a tanker of petrol and a Kalasnikov , got very drunk on vodka at a roadside shack (the equivalent of a service station) and finally arrived at our destination 16 hours later. I have a lot of respect for the might Lada Niva.

been driving a niva for 4 years now. last two years its practically a daily car. I first drove a niva when I bought mine. It was horrible, I drove it 80km back home, it didnt go faster than 80kmh without feeling like its gonna disintegrate. I had to fix almost everything on it. Gearbox, driveshafts, head gasket, upgraded the transfer case, welded new floor, door sills, floor frame. upgraded the seats to ones that dont give you scoliosis, replaced the windshield, completely redesigned the heater. Made the cooling system like vw, not with the original over flow tank that sucks. And after I did all that. its a surprisingly reliable car. I put around 10k km a year on it. nothing mayor has broken down, only occasional ball joint and small things like that. Love that car. my niva is not visually appealing, and I dont treat it as a show car, i clean behind the front seats when theres no more room to throw my garbage. i step on the bonnet and roof when needed. In other words I treat it as a work horse, a reliable one at that. I have LPG on mine so its reasonably economical too. only thing that lacks is the engine, gutless, thats why its gonna get some boost this summer.
